About this project

I'm a mother of two African-American girls. When they were younger it was very difficult for them to find dolls that was a reflection of them. I believe it is imperative that our girls of color see a reflection of themselves while at play as well as encouraging diversity. Trying to locate African American dolls in one location has always been a problematic issue. Although many African American dolls are available, the major retailers only select a few to advertise or become available to consumers. Therefore, myself and other moms where searching from store to store and web sites to locate these dolls for our girls. Doing so, a network of moms was created. We would try to locate a doll that wasn't available in our area or available online. I also discovered if there was a Caucasian doll and African American doll of the same type, the African-American doll was more expensive. At times making it very difficult to purchase the doll. I never understood why that occurred and still occurs. I started to do some research and discovered the major retailers only carry 20% of the African American dolls that are available to the 85% of the Caucasian dolls that are available. I had a vision to open a store where as I would have all the African American dolls that's available in one location, a one-stop shop. So that parents like us wouldn't have the hassle of going from one location to another and the prices aren't sky rocket high.  I launched my business July 4,2016. My goal is to have a physical location in Atlanta and from there I would seek opportunities to venture out in other major cities in the U.S. Opening a physical location, I would be able to not only provide the widest variety of African American dolls to our girls as I do now, but also I'd like to give back to young girls in our community to promote self love, identity, and empowerment. I would like to have workshops at least once a month that would teach our girls self awareness, etiquette, education, hygiene, credit, investing, life coaching, and even a sports team that builds unity.  This project or movement is not just about selling a doll, but I'm very passionate about making a difference in our African-American communities.

Risks and challenges

I really don't have any risk other than what I've already taken on at the launch of my site www.cutesygirldolls.com since July 4th. The store is doing well to be 6 months in.
