DEF Skateboards is pleased to present the first 6 skateboard deck prototypes designed and hand printed by Francesco Aldo Fiorentino (Surfer’s Den), Daniele Rossi and Edith Poirier (Serio Collective).
We need your help to complete the project! The series will consist of 12 decks, each one representing a different neighbourhood in Milan with its shape and illustration.
The idea for this project sprung up about a year ago, Daniele and I (Edith) had been supplying Franz with screen printed logos for the surfboards he was designing for many years, every time we saw each other we would have discussions about the city, skateboarding and illustrations until one day we decided to put all of these common interests together.
Our aim is to create a new series of decks that represent the city from our point of view by combining our skills and capabilities. When people think of Milan its easy to think about the tourist attractions and stylish neighbourhoods but that’s not what makes Milan interesting to us, so we want to share with you our secret spots, hidden architectural gems and neighbourhoods that have had an impact on us in some way over the years.
Our objective is to create 12 different decks; from the mini-cruiser to the longboard, each describing a different part of Milan through it's shape and illustration. The illustrations are charcoal sketches that are scanned, digitalized and transformed into silkscreen frames where each deck is printed by hand. None of the boards have curves, kicks or concave; they are flat in tribute to the city of Milan.
Each model will be produced in a limited quantity (only 10 of each will be made), signed and numbered by the creators of DEF skateboards. Once the decks are gone we will not reprint any of the models. If this project is funded we will be able to produce the next six prototypes and produce 10 of each model for a total of 120 decks.
With the first six prototypes on the table we are ready to start producing 10 decks of each design. Since we are working in small numbers and the screens have already been made production time is estimated to take between 30 and 60 days once the project has been funded. The next six decks will be more of a challenge because we have to go back to the drawing board, choose the next locations, sketch out 6 new forms, make an illustration that represents each spot and get them ready to print. If our project is funded the idea is to release a new deck every two weeks until we reach a total of 12 (including the 6 prototypes you see here). Anyone who selects the "mystery deck" rewards will have to be patient with us, the estimated delivery time of these products will be 90 to 120 days after the project is funded.
The project will not end here! With your help we will complete this first series of 12 within the end of the year, allowing us to move on to a new series in a new city by next year! Curious? Help us fund this project and you could even choose the next city to be illustrated on our decks!
Please take a look at all of the rewards we are offering our backers:

Risks and challenges
Since we have already created the first six prototypes, we know exactly how much time it will take us and how much it will cost us to produce each deck.
Serio Collective is a screen printing company run by Edith Poirier and Daniele Rossi and has been operating in Milan for many years. We are familiar with the production costs of all of the rewards we are offering so there will be no surprises if our project is funded!
