What is Seven?
- Party game about hanging out with friends and telling stories.
Roleplaying game about examining group social interactions.
Social deduction game about gathering and hiding secret information.
Seven is designed for groups of five or more players. It requires no setup or cleanup — no prep or rulebooks. Seven is played using just cell phones. There is no app to install, sharing the game is as simple as sharing a link. You can play Seven while doing just about anything. Its meant to be played alongside anything you would normally do.
Each game of Seven is played with a thematic playset to flavor the interactions of players and the ongoing narrative. The first playset is, Seven Stonehill Lane. A Victorian Era manor filled with murder, intrigue and occult happenings.
Seven stipulates that each character in the group has two roles. A public role adept at manipulating other characters — persona. And, a secret role which drives the actions of the character — shadow. The result of your interactions during a round is represented by a single outcome — fate.
When you manipulate another character, You are rewarded with an exchange of fate. When you manipulate the fates of the group in accordance with the agenda of your secret role, you have satisfied your shadow’s desires — you are rewarded with increased importance in the ongoing narrative.
Social Deduction Game
Players wishing to exchange fate must physically interact. They may try to hide it — there is always a trail. Fates may be tracked through a crowd. Reactions and actions of the other players can be analyzed to suss out the truth.
When you successfully gather and interpret information as you play, you make informed choices. You aren’t leaving your eventual outcome to chance. You are rewarded for your skill and guile with the self-satisfaction that can only come from outwitting your friends.
Overly Dramatized Example of Play
The Cycle of Seven
Seven is played in a series of rounds. At the end of each round, the results are tabulated and the ongoing narrative is added to.
Between rounds, players might change their roles depending on the results of the previous round. In this way, the players will change their characters throughout a game.
During a round, player roles are fixed — fate is not. The exchange of fate is what drives the game forward. As fate moves, knowledge is gained but the outcomes move closer to being finalized.
The base game allows you to create unlimited games of Seven using the base playset — Stonehill Lane. Only the creator of a game needs to own Seven or the playset being used. Your purchase will be linked to your account — no one else needs to create an account to play. An active internet connection and a cell phone with a relatively recent browser are required to play Seven.
$8000 Art Upgrade
At this point, I will able to commission more artwork. One of my major artwork goals is to be able to fill in the deck of fate with evocative, interesting and inclusive artwork. I want to be able to offer these cards as a print on demand product down the line. It won’t be this early but they will be designed with this in mind.
$10,000 Additional Playset
A new Kickstarter exclusive playset will be available. I have other playsets* in the works. At this level, I will be able to fully develop one of them and offer it as a Kickstarter exclusive reward. Additional playsets will be made available at new backer tiers.
$13,000 Tarot Deck
As mentioned earlier, Turning the deck of fate into a full tarot product. As new playsets come out I will offer these in a format for print on demand. Does this mean a k-drama inspired tarot deck? One can dream.
$18,000 Professional Narration + Digital Assistant Integration
A huge part of this game is the ongoing narrative that is shaped between rounds, I want to add a narrated experience to the game. This would allow me to bring professional narration to your game with integration to Chromecast and digital assistants.
*These are some of the additional playsets I want to make. When the project is funded or goals are met, I will take a survey to decide the next unlock: This list is not final, I would like community feedback on what topics to further explore.
- Seven Years of Slumber: A Journey to the Stars
- Seven Gates of Easthold: A Treatise on Dwarven Hospitality
- Seven Sided Triangle: A Love Story
- Seven Generations of Winter: A Tale of What Survived
- Seven Saddles Saloon: A Cool Drink in a Thirsty Town
- Seven Minutes from Contact: A hunt for the truth
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter campaign and the most ambitious game design journey that I have ever embarked upon. I know there will be unforeseen challenges but, I have done everything I can to make sure my first project will be successful. I hope it is the first of many.
Creating the app is the most technically demanding part of this project. I am the project's developer and I have already created a version that I have been using for playtesting. The application is built on a very scalable, well-test and reliable service made for huge projects. Additionally, using a web app as a framework insulates the project from many of the pitfalls associated with platform specific app development.
There are currently about a dozen of each of the role types. This constitutes a minimum for a complete playset. The bulk of upcoming content work is going to focus on creating and testing more cards.
Art assets for this game are something I am being very careful with. I'm looking for an artist whose vision matches mine — specifically, evocative, interesting and inclusive artwork.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
