The Spy Game is an action & espionage roleplaying game book that uses the 5th Edition of the world's most famous roleplaying game rules.

Delve into a world of spies, assassins, diabolical masterminds and suave secret agents.

The Spy Game is a modern 5E roleplaying game of international espionage and adventure, presented in a hardback core rulebook, brimming with full-color illustrations, missions, villains and super spies. Our goal is to create a standalone spy experience with the familiarity of 5th Edition.

Choose your Class. Choose from eight character classes and sixteen specialized archetype options as you level up. Are you the Technician or the Face? The Infiltrator or the Hacker? Whether sneaking in silently or going in loud, unique class features give you a mix of skills and abilities to complete your mission!

The writing team has decades of experience and includes: Sam Webb, the head of RPG development at Modiphius Entertainment; Eric Campbell, long time GM for Geek and Sundry; Rob Wieland, developer for the Firefly RPG and Star Wars Saga Edition; Charlie Smith, long time GM, roleplayer and streamer; Oz Mills, writer on Dragon Age: Faces of Thedas and Star Trek Adventures; Virginia Page,  writer and developer on John Carter of Mars and Star Trek Adventures; and James Barry, developer for Dropzone Commander, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare and Kung Fu Panda.

 Backing the project is quick and easy. Simply choose your pledge from the list at the top right of the page directly, or click 'Back this project' at the top to the right of the video. If you have any questions we have an FAQ at the bottom of the page, or you can leave a comment and we'll try to answer you asap.

At the end of the campaign we will send you a link to a pledge manager so that you can manage your pledge.  You can add more to your pledge levels for add-ons, and tell us what items you want to add. You can use the pledge manager to calculate and pay for shipping. Below is the list of rewards you get for backing the Kickstarter.

 Below is the list of rewards in detail for each pledge level. You can also read more in the pledge list at the top right of the page. 

We've added to the pledges from Handler and up, giving even more to backers. We've also added the 'Elite Team' pledge after talking with the community and coming up with a group pledge. 

 The below stretch goals are extras and additions that we can offer backers if we go beyond our funding target for the core rulebook. Some of these are unlocked for all backers, some are included in higher level pledges and some allow backers to add more to their pledges and get add-ons once the campaign has ended. We have even more stretch goals planned just in case we manage to go even further and unlock more, so check in throughout the campaign to see what we've been able to add! 

The below have changed slightly (see update #3 for more details) though certain stretch goals haven't moved as we guarantee our guest writers, freelance artists and designers set rates.

You can also include add-ons in your pledge to get even more spy gear. After the kickstarter we'll send backers a link to be able to manage their pledge. Simply increase the amount you're pledging during the kickstarter campaign, and then when you're managing your pledge you can tell us which extras you'd like.

Some add-ons are unlocked when we unlock their stretch goals, and if we unlock even more we hope to add even more add-ons as well. Please note that some pledges include some add-ons already.

 Social goals are stretch goals that we unlock by hitting social media targets. These rewards will be unlocked as we hit the goals. 

 As we hit the goals above we can unlock the rewards below. This means that if backers like, follow, subscribe and share with friends we can unlock even more rewards. These goals are purely socially and community lead, and will help not only backers but also the support for the game after the campaign has been delivered.

We have produced tabletop RPGs and Kickstarters for other companies, and believe we have an ambitious but realistic estimate of when the project can deliver.

  •  Month 1-6: Beta Testing - We'll release a beta version of the game for testing by you, and we've allotted the first six months after the Kickstarter campaign for development and writing.
  •  Month 7-9: Editing and Layout - Once the manuscript's complete, we'll go through editing and layout, and once that's done give you a preview to read over. This allows us to catch any mistakes before printing and get the best final game we can into your hands!
  •  Month 10-12: Proofing, Printing, and Freight - We'll be working with trusted printing and manufacturing partners to make the best quality books, dice, and accessories we can, and once they're ready we'll freight them to our fulfillment partner in the USA.
  •  Month 13+: Shipping - We'll ship you your game!

We will keep backers regularly informed with updates, not only throughout the campaign but also afterwards as we go through the production process.

Estimated costs of delivery are listed below - please note, because the size of the book may increase and there may be multiple extras included, this cost is likely to change and is just an estimate.

Risks and challenges

We have been developing The Spy Game for a year so far and have the rules in an Alpha version. We plan to release the Beta version to backers once the campaign is finished for feedback and input, and then go into layout. While this means that the timeline for the production may seem long, it has actually been our experience that 13 months is the approximate time these sorts of productions take.

We’re starting from the ground up with this project and the company, and want to be as open and honest as possible with backers. We want to use Kickstarter as it was originally designed, to give people with experience, expertise and good ideas a way to crowd fund their projects. This means that rather than overpromise too much and then not be able to deliver, we have costed out the pledges and possible add-ons and stretch goals first.

Factory production can also encounter delays - as mentioned above we’re doing everything possible to have the print files ready as soon as we can. However sometimes files, layout or print work require changes based on the quality of samples (which is why we're starting now), errors in print files or formats and other issues can add up. There could also be problems with stretch goals and add-ons in this way. With our experience we try hard to avoid these problems, but they can still happen.

There is always the possibility of unpredictable circumstances or problems. Games are made by people, and we've experienced our fair share of life intervening in well laid plans. If this happens we'll let you know asap, as well as what our plan is to resolve any issues.
