SHOT is now complete and powerHouse Books will be publishing the book in Spring 2017. Most photography books today require the photographer to contribute funding to publish and distribute the book. That is why I am turning to the Kickstarter audience to help me finish the project.
I began SHOT in the fall of 2013 and completed it in December 2015. For almost 2 1/2 years, I traveled 100,000 miles around the USA, photographing survivors of shootings. SHOT includes all races, many ethnicities, ages 8-80, from high and low profile shootings. When possible, survivors were photographed where they were shot. The project is not meant to be divisive. Many gun owners, including an NRA member are participants in SHOT. All Americans are affected by gun violence and SHOT demonstrates this with a vast mosaic of people included in the 101 survivors.
Max Kozloff, esteemed photography and art critic, has written the Foreword. Dr. Tanya Zakrison, surgeon at Jackson Memorial Hospital (Miami) Emergency Room, has written the Afterword. (I felt that it was extremely important to have the voice of a doctor on the front lines of this national health emergency heard). Charles Traub, photographer and insightful photography authority, has sequenced the images. Nikolai Shorr, award winning art director, has designed the book. The SHOT book looks amazing!!!
I have used my personal savings to fund the project and hope that you will help me finish it. SHOT has received a good deal of publicity both here and in other countries. Stern Crime (Germany) features a story in their current issue. PhotoDot (Korea) too has a story with the project featured. NowThis Media released a short video on facebook about the project on August 11th, that now has 19K likes! SHOT will be in two shows in September; one at the Houston Center for Photography and the other at The Loft in Los Angeles. Please see all the many stories about SHOT on the SHOT website Press page, www.shotproject.org. I believe the momentum for the project will continue.
Please help become part of the endeavor to bring a voice to the remarkable and brave survivors of gun violence in America. Statistics do not have a voice. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
The photographing of survivors is complete. We have a well established and respectable publisher, powerHouse Books committed to the publication and distribution of the book.
Any funds that are raised over the amount requested will enable us to pay for the complementary books for all of the 101 survivors. We will also be able to increase the number of books to be made. An interactive website in which other shooting survivors will be able to send in their own photos to become part of an on-line community/network is also planned and additional funds will enable us to set this up.

Last year, I attempted a kickstarter to fund my travel expenses (paid for with my savings) I did not reach my goal. I believe that with the book contract with powerHouse now signed and with the many rewards offered this time around, I am confident we will prevail.
