In 1974, Saturday's Warrior, the live stage musical, began its run of 246 consecutive sold-out shows in Salt Lake City. In Los Angeles, audiences flocked to fill the huge civic auditoriums, night after night. In Phoenix, Saturday's Warrior sold more tickets in two hours than Elton John sold in two weeks. It was a phenomenon like no other.
The musical, written by Doug Stewart and Lex de Azevedo, was based on the premise that "there is more to life than just this life." It follows a fictional Mormon family with a teenage son struggling with his faith, and also the love story of promises made before this life. Saturday’s Warrior struck a chord with audiences everywhere, Mormon or not. Thousands brought their friends. Lives were touched. Hearts were changed.
It's been 40 years, and we, Rachel and Emilie - two of Lex de Azevedo's daughters, have felt that it is time to share the music and message of Saturday’s Warrior as never before. We are thrilled to be a part of producing a big-screen motion picture of Saturday's Warrior—with your favorite songs, an amazingly talented cast, and a screenplay that captures the magic of the original play. The film takes place in groovy 1972, yet the message is surprisingly perfect for today. Would you believe the hard part was convincing our dad, Lex?
Over the past four decades, scarcely a week goes by that someone doesn't stop our dad and tearfully tell him that Saturday's Warrior changed their life, or the life of someone close to them. Growing up, all of us siblings were asked to deliver these messages to our dad. While most of the messages came from total strangers, each message left us connected.
Saturday's Warrior will once again be life-changing. Maybe we could try do this on our own, but YOU have ALWAYS been part of Saturday's Warrior and Kickstarter is one way we can create history together, once again . . .
Kickstarter rewards allow you to have once-in-a lifetime insider experiences. From autographs to meeting the cast to even being in the film! Share Saturday’s Warrior with your family and friends. Risks and challenges
We anticipate releasing the film late summer 2016. That date could change as needed to assure the best possible theatrical run. DVDs would be released approximately 4-8 months after the film is in theaters. The digital soundtrack will be released as soon as possible, maybe as early as Winter/Spring 2016.
My sister and I have been in production together for 15 years. We have had four successful Kickstarter campaigns in the past two years. We know that Kickstarter brings like-minded people together to fulfill on an idea or dream and those dreams become reality.
