About

Queering the Art Classroom

Queering the Art Classroom is an educational organisation, working to develop a more inclusive curriculum.

Queering the Art Classroom takes part in university research, debate and curriculum development on gender and sexuality issues. There is evidence to suggest that homophobia is prominent in UK schools, yet measures to address the issue have largely rested on schools and LGBTQIA+ charities reducing discussions of homosexuality to anti-bullying discourses and introducing curriculum modifications that are overwhelmingly homonormative. The limitations of these current methods ignore the societal and institutional power structures that produce homophobia, which is often referred to as heteronormativity. It has been suggested that heteronormativity, not victim narratives or counter-stereotypes, needs to be addressed in the curriculum to prevent homophobia and create inclusive learning environments.

Art education is a fruitful site for addressing heteronormativity. Art education can promote criticality and inclusive learning, which serves to counter oppressive discourses. Yet, commentators within art education have suggested that some of art education’s strongest attributes - criticality and exploration - tend to be overlooked, especially within commonly used art curriculum topics such as ‘identity’. Indeed, under this topic, gender and sexuality is hardly ever broached. Through the application of a pedagogy rooted in queer theory, Queering the Art Classroom explores the possibilities of challenging heteronormativity through art interventions. As such, Queering the Art Classroom aims to go beyond the homonormative inclusion of LGBTQIA+ content, towards a deeper exploration of gender and sexuality.

The Project

Queering the Art Classroom Collaborates is an interdisciplinary art event held at the National Trust's Sutton House, London, September 15-26 2019.

This will be a group-show of five London based artists, whose individual works respond to our June exhibition of student art created with Queering the Art Classroom

The aim of this exhibition is to provide a platform for emerging LGBTQ+ artists.

While the exhibition is on, we will have new students from 2020's projects view the work. We will also host workshops for schools and the public throughout the duration of the exhibition. This will include a session by our Reading Group, which you can read more about here.

The inspiration behind this work is to develop and explore non-normative genders and sexualities in the art curriculum and to explore queer participatory art practices in gallery spaces. Homophobia is prominent in UK schools, and Queering the Art Classroom seeks to address this and showcase that students should be taught LGBTQ+ topics.

We have worked with students to create art projects rooted in queer theory to challenge homophobia and heteronormativity.

The project is driven by a desire to connect students with artists, building a LGBTQ+ network and showcasing that LGBTQ+ issues should not be removed from the curriculum.

Your help

Our open call for artists closes on 27th May. Once we have selected work, we will be ready to go. However, we will still need your help. This event is curated and produced entirely by young artists and creatives, with little to no funding.

Your support will go towards:

- Paying the artist fees (following a-n rates of pay)

- Printing costs

- Workshop materials

By supporting us you will:

- Ensure a successful event, entirely produced by young independent artists

- Help to create a thriving local art scene

- Help to support Queering the Art Classroom, its mission, and its work in schools

Our Supporters

- For this event, we are supported by the National Trust's Sutton House, who have donated  the exhibition space for our project.

Risks and challenges

Before deciding to launch this Kickstarter we carefully assessed any risks and challenges we may face throughout this project.
Your pledges and donations go directly to producing this exhibition. We have the space and we have had a strong response to our open call. However, without fundings, our main challenge becomes hiring the necessary technical equipment to be able to run the exhibition.
The main risks are not being able to provide adequate gear and not being able to pay the artists a fair fee.
