About

Steampunk, and Dark Fantasy/Horror, an original novel by acclaimed author J. M. McDermott. .

The clockwork kingdom of Saxonia engineered itself into a machine of the law, refashioning even its citizens’ bodies into cogs and pistons. Before the chirurgeons and engineers splice his brain inside the crown, Prince Hollownot escapes into the kingdom’s flogistan soul, where he sees all possible futures. In one, Princess Sapsorrow can break the law with contradiction and shatter the kingdom. But saving the world from the machine comes at a high price: Her love, her family, and her physical body will all be destroyed.

The neighboring kingdom of Bavaria has seen nothing come past the great clockwork wall of Saxonia for centuries until a Straggletaggle appears with an odd physiognomy — maybe human, maybe not — and an incredible tale of escape from Saxonia. She claims ignorance of the nearby fatal airship crash and the exquisite prosthetic foot in the wreckage. When a phonograph wrapped in the shell of a man arrives demanding Princess Sapsorrow’s return, Bavaria's disgraced prince and scientist princess, with their intrepid bodyguard, embark on a perilous mission with the Straggletaggle as their guide, to stop a war that, should it start, can only end with Saxonia turning the people of Bavaria into components of its horrific machine.

Straggletaggle is coming out on January 5, 2014. The cover and interior are laid out and done. The files are uploaded into the printers' servers. The cost of production has already been spent.

With this kickstarter, the goals are simple.

1) To quickly recover the production costs that have already been spent, for the editor, the cover designer, and the interior layout services of Janet Harriett and Nissa McCormack.

2) To pay the cover artist, AnnGee, for her time. (Full disclosure: She's my wife! She has a degree in Illustration from Moore. Just because I could convince her to work for free, doesn't mean she should! I want to make sure she gets paid.)

2) To raise funds for promotion of the book, so we can reach out to reviewers, and expand the scope of the project with the help of a professional publicist and marketing person.

3) To build a website that will independently sell my eBooks in any file format desired to readers anywhere in the world, free of DRM. This will begin with a very inexpensive WordPress site with plug-ins that solve the sales problem with a turnkey solution. Any stretch funds raised will be turned into the website.

4) To offer an opportunity for supporters and fans to get a first look, before the official launch date, and make sure the signed first edition pre-orders arrive in fans' hands BEFORE the official release date!

Cost outlay:

$1000 - Production cost of new book, already incurred.

$1000 - Cost budgeted for printing and mailing copies to backers. Excess funds will be rolled over into category 3...

$??? - Promoting the book, with review copies mailed out, and advertising buys in genre magazines.

Anything potentially raised beyond the $2000 will go to advertising purchases in literary magazines, to pour money back into the literary community while raising awareness for the book.

Risks and challenges

The book is written. The design, layout, editing, etc., is all complete.
Backers have limited risk in this project.

If I don't make it to the post office in a timely manner, then there is risk that shipments of rewards will run slow. I actually work at a bookstore that has postal facilities, so this is very unlikely.
