As they explored our coastal waters, legend has it Nova Scotia sailors would toast the discovery of new lands. As you can imagine, navigating the Eastern Shore archipelagos led to more than a few raised glasses.
By the time they reached our home, supplies were understandably short and only one name seemed appropriate... Sober Island. But today, warm hospitality and craft ale await all those with an adventurous heart.
The Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia is a relatively untouched area of the province with a pristine rugged coastline. Among acres of rain forest, peninsulas, inlets, and wild lands sits Sober Island. Once used as a seafaring hub for pirating and rum running, the Island later contained a lobster canning plant, a government wharf and was/is home to many fisherman.
Currently there are approximately 50 people who inhabit Sober Island. We have a great deal of respect for those living on the Island and their willingness to share the beauty of their surroundings. Maintaining the natural wonder whilst respecting tradition is something close to our hearts as well as those who have been blessed to call this place home.
The anchor to the Sober Island Brewing team, Rebecca brings her Eastern Shore heritage to this modern day enterprise. Raised in Sheet Harbour, Rebecca has developed a fine palate for good wine, food, and beer. After working around Canada and Europe she became inspired to move back home to spearhead this craft beer sensation. Ready for a hike with her dog Maddie along the coastline or a boat ride to the many islands, Rebecca truly embraces the beauty of coastal living.
"Enthusiast", "Fanatic", "Beer geek", these are all acceptable terms for our Head Brewer Ron, who has immersed himself in the craft beer industry for the last 15 years. With 10 years in the commercial homebrew industry and many more within the family home, good beer is second nature to this man! Never one to shy away from new tastes and flavors, Ron has traveled throughout Canada, the US, Europe, and New Zealand with his wife and daughter exploring what the rest of the wold has to offer during this intriguing craft beer revolution! Between marathon brew sessions you can catch him biking to the beach, hiking the coastline, or relaxing with some good movies & records.
6.1% ABV, 30 IBU
A smooth medium bodied stout served with a thick and creamy tan colour head. A brininess on the nose with a roast toffee undertone. Dark chocolate bitterness provides a balanced and memorable finish.
Brewed with fresh, whole, Pristine Bay Oysters.
5.1% ABV, 33 IBU
Copper in colour with a bronze hue, complimented by a malty fruity nose with an earthy hop aroma. A full mouth feel, malt forward with layers of caramel sweetness and an inviting hop bitterness. This one is anything but ordinary.
Other beers have included our English Golden Rye Ale and a Chanterelle Mild that we brewed with locally foraged chanterelle mushrooms and served in a cask.
Stay tuned for our upcoming English IPA and Winter Rye Beer!
It was originally our intention to launch Sober Island Brewing Company directly on the Island. Realizing the financial restraints and timeline, the team developed a three phase plan:
Phase One: Brew on a pilot system, launch at Saltscapes in April 2016 and supply local Eastern Shore establishments throughout the summer season. Convert a horse trailer into a mobile craft beer bar in order to present the beer and brand to the public in a unique way.
On April 22, 2016 Sober Island Brewing company launched to a crowd of over 30,000 people at the Nova Scotia Saltscapes Expo. A one-of-a-kind mobile bar and retail outlet pouring some exceptional English style beer immediately surpassed our vision and expectation.
Using our 1/2bbl Sabco Brew Magic system we maintain a constant stream of craft ale to two seasonal Eastern Shore establishments - Liscombe Lodge and the Henley House Pub & Restaurant. Just last week we anchored ourselves in Halifax, the city center, for the first time at The Press Gang Oyster Bar & Restaurant with our flagship Oyster Stout. We have also been fortunate to be invited to many local events promoting craft beer and fine food throughout Nova Scotia.
Phase 2: After surpassing expectations of our phase one goal we have come to the unanimous decision that we need to make more beer! This will be accomplished by embarking on an expansion of our existing brewing space within the Henley House pub and restaurant in order to accommodate our DME 7bbl brewing system, due to arrive in mid-December. A greater capacity will allow us to supply the growing demand throughout Nova Scotia. A greater presence in restaurants throughout the Eastern Shore & HRM, along with farmers markets and growler fill stations throughout the province, will continue our vision of bringing great beer to Nova Scotian's and beyond!
Phase 3: Our vision. This is our destination brewery on Sober Island itself. We are currently working on getting the road built and surveying the land for the perfect spot!

We take great pride in our Province along with our Eastern Shore. Wherever possible we work with other local small businesses to co-promote and create success together.
Risks and challenges
The transition from a committed home brewer into a professional brewing enterprise does not come without some logistical challenges. What may have worked for a single, or even several batches of beer at home does not necessarily translate into a 7bbl brewing system. At Sober Island Brewing Co. we are combining experience with in-depth knowledge of brewing techniques and the industry to ensure a consistently high quality product. What we don't know, we're also willing to learn!
Can we sell our beer once the expansion occurs? You betcha! Not a day goes by that we don't get contacted by a local pub or restaurant interested in carrying our delicious products. Our mobile beer truck is in constant use when we hit the road, too often leaving fans wanting more! With already handfuls of interested accounts, along with the infinite potential for packaged product upon expansion, demand should outweigh our supply for some time to come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
