It is with deep sadness that I bring you the unfortunate news that Deb Monuteaux, the Director of Sappho’s Fire and also my life partner, passed away Sunday, November 11th. Deb had been battling a terminal illness, Pulmonary Biliary Cirrhosis and was fighting to receive a liver through the Lahey Clinic; but over the last 2 months she developed complications requiring a kidney stone operation that led to infections and other setbacks. I can say that she bravely fought this debilitating disease and managed to keep her spirits up in spite of everything. Her family and friends will miss her dearly but believe her work, Sappho’s Fire, Not your Mama’s Roller Derby and Venus, Priests and Superwomen present a powerful educational legacy for women and the LGBTQ community.
Before Deb’s illness, she and I had begun work on our next documentary film project, TransJourney. TransJourney explores three women’s personal journeys and the ways that their lives have become intertwined, and made stronger, because of each other. Deb was extremely disappointed when we had to cancel our cross-country journey to Seattle, WA where most of the filming was to occur. She insisted that we move forward with this production, which we are doing not only to honor Deb’s memory but because we believe it is an important film.
Donations in Deb's memory may be made to Shifting Visions Films, 780 Reservoir Avenue, Suite 113, Cranston, RI 02910 or via paypal on the website: www.shiftingvisions.com.
Weehoo, 41 backers! This thing has just taken off over the past week. I knew I was backing a winner :)
I'm really excited about all the support being generated about this film. This film isn't just about Annabelle, Sandra and Shannon's journeys. It's about everyone's journey and struggle to find their own identity and live an authentic life in the world today.
Thanks Cynthia---I hope we make it too!Alexia
