About this project

Whether it is lowering the rate of recidivism in the NYC prison system, providing access to healthcare and education in the forgotten villages of the Himalayas, or planting one million fruit trees in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the three groups of people featured here found themselves dissatisfied with the status quo that had been an accepted reality for decades or even centuries.  They started their own campaigns of altruism first working alone, until gradually a following grew around them.  The following that swells around a group as change begins to take shape is in itself inspiring and contagious.

During the production of this film we will travel to Kaffer, India to document the amazing work of Ryan and Amanda Phillips of ECTA International.  We’ll learn how they have transformed the Himalayan communities by providing access to basic healthcare and education.

From there we travel to the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, where the High Atlas Foundation is soon to plant the one millionth fruit tree, where none had existed before. Here I’ll document the planting of whole orchards, and the impact upon the villagers who are learning how to lift themselves out of poverty with a sustainable and valuable commodity previously unknown in the region: fresh fruit.  This seemingly simple task offers them an opportunity to engage in a sustainable and profitable community.

Finally we visit Rikers Island in New York City, where Mark Goldsmith, a retired cosmetics executive started the program Getting Out and Staying Out.  Based in Harlem, this non-profit organization successfully reduces the recidivism rate of the prison by giving inmates job hunting skills and help with their education and life coping skills, thus breaking the cycle of crime in their lives.

Over the course of the next year I’ll be traveling to these remote locations and spending two to three weeks immersed in the lives of these three diverse groups of people.  I’m starting to film interviews this June for the Getting Out and Staying Out portion of the film.  I’ll leave for India in October 2011, then come back to New York for editing and more local interviews in the fall.  In January of 2012 I’ll head out to Morocco for three weeks.  When I return I head into Rikers Island prison in the spring of 2012.

Some technical considerations.  This project is being filmed with the brand new, full sensor Sony F3, just released in February 2011.  It is a state-of-the-art HD camera, using traditional cinema lenses for outstanding picture quality.  Despite the extreme conditions in these remote and often dangerous locations, telling the story while maintaining the highest quality product is of utmost importance.
