From the very beginning of my career as a silversmith the landscape has provided an endless inspiration for me. In 2017 it had a particularly strong influence on my work. I spent most of the year training with master silversmiths in Scotland and England and as a result travelled across the UK. I saw the landscape dramatically change from shy hills in England to strong powerful Mountains in Scotland and I wanted to capture these beautiful natural variations in a series of 100 boxes
For this project I present two styles of landscape box. One making use of my digital design expertise in 3D printed nylon and walnut, and the other utilising my skills as a traditional silversmith in Sterling Silver and walnut. Each box is unique.
As a backer of this project you will receive one box based on your chosen location created in either Sterling silver or Nylon.
3D Printed Nylon and Walnut Boxes
3D Printed nylon is a strong, light material that has a beautiful texture and is very pleasant to touch. It is a perfect material for creating a landscape as the texture of it looks very similar to topographical lines on a map. I have used data gathered from Google Maps to digitally sculpt these boxes before having them 3d printed.
Nylon and Walnut Landscape Box
The first reward is 3D Printed in Nylon with a Walnut base. These boxes are made to represent your chosen location, each of the 85 rewards will be unique and personalised to you.
Each lid is 3D printed individually and varnished with the Walnut bases being oiled to bring out the grain.
Sterling Silver and Walnut Landscape Box
The second reward is handmade in sterling silver and walnut. These handmade representations of your chosen landscape will be each unique and completely unrepeatable.
Working with sterling silver sheet I work the metal on a soft tar like material to create the mountains and valleys in silver. Once the hammer work is complete the sides of the boxes are made and attached to the silver landscape.
Once the wooden container is made to fit the piece is Hallmarked in Edinburgh to show the purity of metal, where it was made and when. They will then each be engraved with your location and numbered.
How do you choose my location?
Working through Google Maps we can see the counter lines of nearly the whole planet. This incredible resource is available for all to use and will be used to indicate your chosen location for your personalised box lid.
Choose your location. This could be anywhere you want, where you grew up, a favourite holiday location or somewhere you would like to visit one day!
Find this place on Google Maps.
Once you have your location on google maps you need to drop a pin on the location by clicking where you would like to have the map of. If you have chosen a town or a location that is notated on Google maps click near but not on the location. Short video bellow -
Once you have found your location on Google maps at the bottom of the screen is the Longitude and Latitude co-ordinates of your chosen location. This is the nugget of information that will allow me to start work.
Risks and challenges
With any project come risks and challenges. I am however experienced at making these pieces, bellow I have set out the challenges that I think may arise with this project.
NYLON LANDSCAPE BOX - RISKS/CHALLENGES
These pieces are designed to be made in a reasonable volume without issue. All of the boxes are the same size, the 3D Print is exactly the same diameter this allows for the fit of the two parts to be maintained. These sizes are set and dialled in to be a perfect fit. The landscape that is joined to the top of each box will be made each time for the custom boxes.
The limitation is time on these which is why I have set the delivery date for these pieces at the middle of 2018. I am aiming to have all box lid designs completed by the end of March with files ready to send for 3D Printing in early May. Once the campaign ends I will contact the wood work and order the wooden boxes these will be the limit on the project as these are outsourced parts. I will however be working closely with the woodworker to organise the delivery of these parts to me with suitable time to dispatch at the indicated dates.
Upon completion of the rewards I will message all backers to alert them of the completion of the project, check delivery information as well as deliver tracking information.
STERLING SILVER LANDSCAPE BOXES - RISKS/CHALLENGES
I have set the delivery dates for the Sterling Silver pieces as late in the year as I want to give myself as much time as possible to complete these pieces to a high standard.
As each of the silver pieces take a set length of time and can not be sped up I have limited the pieces to an edition of 15 in total. As each box will be unique I will finish one at a time and post them as they are complete.
At the end of the campaign all backers for Sterling Silver boxes will be messaged and given the position in the list of manufacture. Once your box has been started you will be messaged to let you know and again once it is finished and ready to ship. At this point you will be asked to confirm the delivery address and sent tracking information for your parcel.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
