Within the maximum length that YOU select, Dial-A-Distance works just like other retractable leashes. It extends and retracts as your dog moves around and you can always use the manual brake when needed to stop short of the maximum length. But when your dog reaches the maximum length you selected, Dial-A-Distance automatically brakes.
The Problem and the Solution
Retractable leashes are great for giving your dog more exercise and freedom on walks, and minimizing leash tangling. But if you are distracted for even a moment, your pup may lunge into danger before you can get your thumb on the manual brake. Run into traffic. Engage with a strange dog. Frighten a child. Most retractable leashes have at least a 15-foot range, so your dog can cover a lot of ground in a hurry.
Dial-A-Distance to the rescue!
With Dial-A-Distance, you can quickly and easily set the maximum length to what is safe for your environment. Walking on a crowded city sidewalk? Try two feet and keep your pup at your side. On a wide-open sidewalk? Maybe try 5 feet for a little more freedom. Strolling in an open park? Give your dog the full 15-feet for maximum freedom. With a quick turn of the Dial, you can set any maximum length from 0 to 15 feet (in approximately 1-foot increments). Whenever your dog reaches the maximum distance that YOU select, Dial-A-Distance’s autobrake will engage and automatically stop your dog from going further.
Based in Durham, NC, we are the inventors of ThunderShirt and ThunderLeash, two very popular products, but we are still just a small company. We love to deliver true innovation to solve common problems for pet families. ThunderShirt is a crazy-effective solution for most cases of anxiety or fearfulness. ThunderLeash is a super-simple solution for helping with pulling on leash. And Dial-A-Distance? It is a sneaky-clever new solution for making retractable leashes safer and more fun.
Development So Far
We have been busy developing Dial-A-Distance for nearly two years now. While the goal is simple…a retractable leash with an adjustable maximum length…the engineering is anything but simple. It has to be lightweight, but strong. It has to be very durable. It has to be able to extend and retract smoothly many thousands of times. And it has to be affordable. After evaluating and testing dozens of design alternatives, we believe that we have now found the ideal design approach. It appears to meet all of our criteria for function, quality, safety and cost. Using super-cool 3D printing technologies, we built our first prototypes and put them through all kinds of testing.
We couldn’t be more excited about the results! The latest prototypes have survived hundreds of walks in “real world” conditions, including with big, hard-pulling dogs.
Below are just a couple testimonials from the many dozens of happy prototype testers.
“Dial-A-Distance delivers on its promises. But beyond the safety, I love the convenience maybe even more. With my fixed-length leash I am constantly having to untangle it from my dog's legs. With a regular retractable leash, I am either constantly reeling my dog in, or if I lock it, it just recreates
the tangling issue I have with a fixed leash. Not with Dial-A-Distance. It is always just the right length and the leash is always kept taut, so no tangling!"

“Maggie loves this leash! Our daily dog walks are partly near roads and partly on park trails. Dial-A-Distance keeps Maggie safely close near traffic, but then she gets a lot more freedom in the park than with our old standard leash. I’m surprised by how often I find myself adjusting the maximum length and by how much more fun we have with this freedom. Great product.”

What’s Next? Production!!! We need your support.
So after many months of testing and refinements, we now believe Dial-A-Distance is ready for production. That is where you come in. Producing a product like this is very expensive. The tooling alone for just one size costs over $200,000. And after the initial tooling, we will still need to do additional testing to confirm our stringent quality and safety standards are met.
So jump in and join us! Help cover the start-up costs for
Dial-A-Distance and you can be one of the first people to receive one. And if you pledge at one of our Early Bird levels and would like to test early production samples, you may get yours even sooner! Below is our timeline.

Risks and challenges
Any truly innovative product might encounter unexpected manufacturing or performance problems. While we believe we have this thing figured out and the prototypes are working fabulously, we still might run into a problem that needs to be fixed. If we do, it might cause a delay in delivery, but with our outstanding team, we feel that we will be able to quickly handle anything the “real world” throws at us. We have already identified our manufacturing partner and they are well down the road to getting ready for production.
If this Dial-A-Distance project reaches its funding goal, we will do everything under our control to deliver on time. If something goes terribly awry (highly unlikely!), we won’t leave anyone empty handed. We will offer alternative products from our company as consolation.
