What is Poly
Poly is a multitool 3D printer that uses open source firmware and software, made in PHA, a totally ecological and compostable material.
The concept behind Poly is based on three keywords: open-source, eco-friendly, and upcycling. Poly is equipped with a range of tools: an extruder nozzle, a laser engraving kit, a chocolate extruding kit, and all of them can be quickly alternated by a magnetic mechanism.
It has a printing area of 6cmx6cmx6cm and it can create, in addition to countless plastic objects (in PLA), designs and chocolate shapes.
Poly is for everyone, it fits everyone, and it is within just everyone's reach.
It is a wonderful and educational toy for curious children, a magic tool for foodies, and a precious ally for designers, artisans, and makers who needs to prototype their ideas.

The first prototype of Poly was 3D printed. However, thanks to our partners, we could find an eco-friendly and organic material (PHA) to use by injection molding technique. Unfortunately, the mold cost are pretty high, around 40 thousand dollars, so our goal has been affected by this. Anyway, we are ready to make a large production of Poly, and we are going to do this in the established shipping time thanks to a deep research in production and logistic.
Poly is already in partnership with some companies that are willing to support the launch of the product.
- Mario Schiano s.r.l. works in bicycle sector from 1923. He will help Poly team during assembly process and in logistics.
- When we say that we are ecofriendly, we mean it as our mission! In fact, Poly 3D printer uses Eumakers spool, eco friendly and totally biodegradable filaments made in PLA.
- BoskinTech Co.,Ltd is one of the leading suppliers of plastic mold, metal stamping, CNC machining in the world. Boskintech will provide us with the mold and the frame, made in PHA, a completely biodegradable material.
- Biqu Bigtree Technology Co. ,Ltd is one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of 3D printer parts in China. Biqu will provide Poly with its electronics parts.
- Easy Connect s.r.l. provides wiring and assemblies for industrial, electromedical and military sectors. Easy Connect will provide us with an assembly and wiring service for Poly components.
- Crowdfunding Formazione s.r.l. is a consultancy firm which works in the field of training, with workshops and master classes in Crowdfunding management. It also operates in consultancy to handle sectoral projects, both from a training and practical point of view.
Poly is biodegradable
Poly has a fully biodegradable frame (PHA). Poly is one of the first examples of an eco-friendly printer in the world of 3D printing.
The filament included in the package is made with recycled PLA, and the spool has a unique design, suitable for repurposing and up-cycling.
Poly is portable and runs on battery power
Poly weights less than a kilo, it can be easily transported, it has low-power micro stepper motor, and it can run on battery power (battery not included). With Poly, you can comfortably print from your PC or via smartphone, wireless. In fact, Poly is equipped with both an integrated bluetooth sensor and a micro SD, and these features allow it to be used through Android compatible apps. Don’t be worried if you need to move away from your printer! The print file is saved on the integrated micro SD.
Poly is multi-tool
Poly has an innovative magnetic plug and play system and it is able to perform multiple functions: printing 3D plastic objects, extruding chocolates (thanks to a special kit), engraving on paper and wood (using a 1 Watt laser engraver) and drawing on post-it with a pen.
Poly 3D Extruder
Poly prints objects in PLA with a maximum size of 6 x 6 x 6 cm.
Poly Ciok is an extruder designed to make chocolates through a 5 ml sterile syringe with 1mm needle.
Poly Engraver is a 1 Watt laser tool that works on wood and paper.
Poly Joint is a tool holder suited to draw, write on post-its by using a pen, or to use another tool.

Open source software and firmware
Poly has an open source firmware, based on the world-wide community that guarantees its continuous updating.
The slicer and client are also open source and free, and available online.

Project and Prototyping Story
3D Rap, a team of innovative young artisans operating with modern creativity. Six guys: four engineering students, a designer, and a web developer. They all come from Campania, living close to each other, and they all share the same passion for design and the same enthusiastic ardor towards innovation.
Risks and challenges
Hard-tooling is often made of steel by CNC shanks or electro-erosion process (EDM). When used for serial production, these molds can last for hundred cycles, but cost thousands of euros. In addition, the lead time to make these molds is often measured in months rather than weeks or days.
Therefore, when few thousands of injection printed parts are required, soft-tooling is an alternative. These molds, made of aluminum, are cheaper (usually from 2,000 to 20,000 euros approx.) and faster to make (2-6 weeks).
Unfortunately, the costs and timing of mold making are often influenced by several factors, such as design errors, which may require mold remodeling, or the need to create more iterations before reaching the design and quality of the final part. In regard to these issues, manufacturers have begun to use 3D printing to make molds to create injection molded functional prototypes.
