I know, this music-concept-thing is nothing new! But basically that’s the point: composing music with concepts in a pop-cultural context has its roots in times of fusion-, jazz-rock- and progressive-rock-productions in the 60s to 80s. People had musical journeys to follow, complete works as sonic cosmoses that allowed the listener to plunge into attentively and consciously, and thereby: into the inner world of themselves. And that is exactly (we’d say) how we should consume music again: aware of its quality, aware of it’s power, aware of ourselves, aware of silence. So, yes, telling a story by creating a bigger musical concept is nothing new, but still there is something special about this project:
The Road Up North is both: my pseudonym and the name of the written story. The Road Up North tells a journey about uprising and falling, about contrasts and exploring the psyche as a dark but colorful inner world. Seven chapters brought to you in seven albums and a lot more EP’s telling the different parts of the story fluently; each with booklets of the written story in english and german. Each of the 14 tracks on the album fauna (which is the album you’re funding) has it’s own text-part of the story.
The Story is about a wayfarer, waking up in his inner world, meeting his greatest fears but also pleasures, discovering a world of spirituality and universal principles. While he is confused about his own nature and that of all humans, he tries to understand the essence of being a human. The mystic journey takes him on a path through a fantastic and (like Harrison, the translator of the story, said) slightly disturbing sonic-nature.
I transformed this story into electronic music, which consists of elements of trap, hiphop, jungle, ambient, downtempo, jazz, broken beat, fusion, film-music and experimental sound design. Of course you can just listen to the music or enjoy the story separately but I’d personally recommend to read the story while listening to the music.
Here’s the album teaser, enjoy!
With your help we can finance:
- the mastering of the album
- a high quality vinyl production (180g, black color)
- the printing of the 20-page booklet
- the printing of the 30x30cm inlays
- the digital distribution
- everything we need for the (safe) physical distribution
- Gema, fees and taxes (lots of)
- marketing, which you can’t omit nowadays, to make stuff public
The most expensive article is the vinyl itself. The printing of the booklets and inlays will be very expensive, too, ‘cause we want to produce on thick natural paper at a local press, that we trust in. Also crowdfunding doesn’t count as a donation, but liable to taxation, that's why we come to 12.900 €. We rounded down the funding goal ’cause the rest we already payed or will pay independently of this project (meaning many other items and articles, not only 100 bucks ;) ).

This is how the printed booklet will look like (the first three pages):
Like you can see: It will take a while, until you will finally receive your vinyl. Germany is quiet busy at pressing on vinyl at the moment, that's why we have to plan on June. If we're lucky the productions are going to start a lot earlier. But we wanted to share the worst case scenario honestly:
I’m Joshua, also known as The Road Up North. I’m studying composing and producing artist at Popakademie in Mannheim and produced the album „Fauna“. I like silence as well as music. I don’t have a tattoo for that.
Marius is studying music and creative industries at Popakademie in Mannheim and takes care of research in rights and finance for the founding management of Golden Record Label. Marius likes vegetables a lot. He has a broccoli-tattoo.
Harrison is studying songwriting at Popakademie in Mannheim and translated my story into english. This guy was able to let the lyrical pictures of the story work in english as they were intended in german. Unfortunately, he shaved his mustache about two days after the shoot. But I think he likes tattoos.
… if you want to start a sonic journey, which is longer than one album. Way longer.
… if you value long lasting cultural quality and diversity in the creative business, the slow movement.
… if you want to help an upcoming brand to establish.
… if you think, the so called creative industry should care more about values of the social and cultural aspects of sustainability and its communication.
This kickstarter project will finance the first release on Golden Record Label. So you won’t only help me as an artist, but also help me to establish the labels name and awaken attention for it.
The name »Golden Record Label« operates as a manifesto, which contains the inspiration of the golden record, I’d say humans greatest concept album of our history. The entire output of the label itself shell be a journey, discovering the slow movement, imparting values like appreciation, power of contrasts, dynamics in music and marketing, and if that means that we need less marketing, a quiet and gentle one.
There is a lot of interesting stuff already planned and connected, already lurking, connected in one universe. In this universe there is infinit space for philosophy, reflection, a deeper meaning of life-style, stories and people who want to change the awareness of the rest of the world. And of course a lot of album-releases including from:

Like I said in the video: »Work, Sports, getting food, following people and news, working a little bit more, don’t forget to socialize, celebrate, poison yourself, getting more food and more news, every day. But where is the gap, the break?
I really think we don’t take enough time and much less any real silence to reflect ourselves and our experiences. One thing that lead me to celebrate sort of active silence was and still is listening to albums on vinyl, cause often they have a whole story to tell, which really has deserved to be listened attentively and consciously. That’s why I composed this music, that’s why I couldn’t help myself and produced a 2,5 minutes ambient track in midst of the album, cause it’s telling the story, how it should be told: as a sonic adventure, full of contrasts.
And as we speak of contrasts and the headline motivation: Dynamics are disappearing, not only in music. Thanks of social media everyone is happy, everyone is famous, fancy and full of likes. Everything is one compressed sauce, sold as pop, but actually is schlager music, music in which meaningless phrases about a superficial love. Grossly overstated? Tell us your thoughts, we’re happy and keen debaters!

Birk Possecker made this incredible video. Incredible guy! Incredible work! Incredible humour! Check out his channels and work!
Caroline and Valerie Hebel, Sarah und Martina Hebel, for helping me with your experiences and the constant motivation!
Jens Kneifel, Sam Khatam, Leandra Preissler, Alina Herzog, Michael Nowatzky, Christoph Litke and all people who had time for helping and talking to us, from near and far, you made this project a better one!
Risks and challenges
We took a lot of time, to make our calculation a proper one, tried to miss no detail. In unexpectedly weird cases of miscalculation and risks, we would be able to handle some parts of the production flexibly by using (for example) thinner paper or, in worst case, paper and its production as not so eco-friendly as planned, a thinner vinyl, etc.
We’re aware of vinyl as a not so eco-friendly production at all, but we did and do our best to check any aspect of production that can be sustainable.
If you have any questions please add it to the comments section of this campaign so that everyone can see it.
All logistic matters are planned carefully, especially the timing.
We will produce and deliver your rewards as soon as possible. During the campaign we will communicate openly on Kickstarter and keep you updated on facebook. Join the profil of The Road Up North. Tell your friends about this project. And last but not least: thanks for your support!
