About this project
[All contributions that are funded will be strictly used for reward & trip expenses.]
Hello! My name is Nik Koyama and I'm the creator of the Get This Kid Out of Here Project!
I get a lot of questions about what this project is or what I am setting out for it to be, and the more I think about it, the further I get from the answer. The possibilities are so big that I lose track of where reality meets imagination; it could be anywhere. However, I can definitely tell you where the project started! It started as my life's work. I am a videographer who takes great pride with how I treat people & how my connections continue to make my life what it is today. (To read the original description, scroll to the bottom to the ***)
[Updated January 15th 2014]
The process of a Kickstarter project has taught me things that I could’ve never have learned doing anything else. It started at one moment; a moment that I could track back to an exact second. These kind of moments hit you the hardest, but give you the opportunity to reshape yourself the most. I was robbed of my editing equipment that I use to do my personal videography projects. Projects that were very collaborative and full of a lot of different artist’s passions. They were all gone and not only was my work gone, but the work I was in the process of doing.
That means debt. So I got knocked down hard; in ways I could’ve never imagined. I felt the consequences of a small tragedy and I made the decision, then, to do what I can do in society to simply make us better. This is where Kickstarter comes along. I realized this was a project so I had to focus in on how I can utilize what happened to do something very specific. It was hard being specific because there is so much I want to do and so much that I want to get accomplished under the hood of this project. So I chose collaboration. I kept wondering, “How can I use this project to teach our generation the importance of collaboration?”
So instead of focusing on creating a special trip/project about me and my goals, I changed it. I made such a big change that the whole Kickstarter Project suffered for it. I am in full belief that we did not get funded simply because no one had a real grasp on exactly what I was doing. This was because I was changing dreams and the bars I was grasping on, kept getting pushed higher. At first it was music videos. Then it was talents. Then it was collaboration. The more I thought about it, the more I understood the project. The project can't be grasped, only understood.
Jacob Silvas and I are taking a cross country road trip from West to East Coast, then back to the West. We will be collaborating with random talents from state to state! We will find these talents by conversation ONLY. Instead of differentiating the line between electronics being a “tool” or a “weapon”, we want to show our generation what things can be done without ANY OF IT. Through good old fashioned conversations and hand shakes. The great thing about this is it leads the way for sponsors; companies and people, just like you and me, who can come in and donate a product or money and let us do something with it! For example, if we find a talented break dancer. Well if he is with our movement, we will film a breakdance video for him! Except instead of just me and him collaborating, I might throw in one of the many sponsors we have already accumulated! So he might have some headphones from Boomphones inc. and a super light backpack from Airbac and I will shoot it using my Naneu Travel equipment on hand. This way, everytime you DO see a random talent collaboration, it will have the collaborative value of something planned out. Companies get film for their product, talent gets exposure, I get the good feeling of doing something right for society, (and society learns the importance of all of the above!)
So we will be following Hopsin’s tour around the country and stopping in all of the towns he is in. Feel free to follow along with where we are at! We will be creating cool ways to get involved and stay in touch with all of you! Wish us luck on our trip and we will come back with a great new documentary! A documentary that will be a combination of everything we came across that could teach this generation to lay down the technology and get out and be human! To stay in touch, visit our website (which is temporarily down) GTKOH.com or email me directly, firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you for the support! Now lets collaborate.
[***] (orignial kickstarter description)
This project was created because everything I had worked for was being threatened. September 28th, 2013 I made a trip to my old hometown to deliver finished video products. Once I arrived, I went to see my brother's new restaurant and while I was inside, my car was broken into and robbed. That incident put me thousands of dollars in debt to my clients and rendered me in complete shock. Brides would never see their wedding day, and artists would never see their performances. After just moving out of my small town, it was looking like, due to money problems, I would have to move back.
This project originally started (pre- Kickstarter) as a music video tour where I would travel around California working with various talents to demonstrate the meaning of collaboration. I would work day by day and have one video edited and released before I started shooting my next one. I wanted to work myself as hard as I could to show kids that negatives are reversible. I was going to have a local barbecue to raise gas/food money for my trip. The project was made so that I could raise my own money to pay off my own debts & teach a huge lesson to everyone. It started as one simple trip to complete one task. The more people heard about how I reacted to this disaster, the more they started to build my project and attach onto it. It started as me and that one goal and it has grown into a collection of different people, offering different things. I am reluctant to explain what the project exactly is right now as I write this, because most likely someone has come along and completely changed everything, that's the beautiful thing about true networking. Today is different than yesterday.
One second I am pitching the idea to my former teacher and the next I am standing in front of hundreds of students just like me, teaching about positive energy and what can be done with it. I was making real life connections and teaching real lessons with students from my high school! It wasn't until later that day that I realized what I just did. Kids were contacting me, telling me that my energy caused them to change how they treated people, how they were seeing the world around them and how they treated themselves. Who could ask for a better feeling than that? This whole beautiful thing that just happened was simply because I told my cause to the right person in my network, Dr. Preston. The choice for me to ask for his help came right back and changed my life completely. It really makes you stop and think of what opportunities are hiding in plain view. My connections with these students inspired me to add talking with kids to my tour. I don't know how I am going to do it, but to set an example and teach a lesson, you have to put yourself in front of potential supporters. This event that took place made me rethink how I could reach an entire generation. I came up with the state to state idea but there was just simply no way to fund myself to do such a thing.
Then I was introduced to Kickstarter! And all I can say is wow. Kickstarter allows me to take this cause I conceived to whole new levels, nationwide levels, with your support that is. With Kickstarter's collaboration I will not only be able to get the chance to reward supporters back for their support, but I can take this huge idea I had, and multiply it across the map!! The more people that support this, the farther we can work and the farther we can teach. Another HUGE thing that Kickstarter has allowed me to do is majorly involve supporters in my trip. I never would have thought that I would let anyone choose my route, but besides a couple planned collaborations, I am leaving it up to the supporters to choose where I go and who I work with! (via donation)
So what can you do? Well ,support the cause of course! If you don't have the money to donate, that's completely fine! Support comes in so many forms other than cash. What I'm really after is your unique energy and what can be done with it. If you believe in the cause and the network I'm building, I'd be honored to have your support! You putting any sort of energy in this project will elevate it that much higher. Whether its from simply telling me you support our cause, to blasting this movement through your entire unique network, everything is belief and that's what we need, belief. With that said, the more money we fund for this, the more we can build, and the more we can change. There are just so many ways any one person could help out. Your attention is support and I can't tell you how humbled I am to have it.
This project isn't about saving my dreams anymore, its grown into much more than that. This project is about being the change you want to see in the world. I want to see a lot more collaboration, a lot more positive energy, and a lot more of asking for help. I want to see a lot more kids look disaster in the eye and reach out for help in the battlefield. I'd be more than honored if you decided to come along on this trip & help me change lives. Thank you and I'll see you there!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge I'm going to have on this journey is staying 100%. I'm going to be shooting videos and releasing them between states & between shoots. I don't expect anyone, even people close to my career, to know exactly what that is asking of myself, but I am more than ready to do it. I have conditioned for this campaign my whole life and I didn't even know it. I've worked for days on end, I've made the sacrifices, I've cut the bad fruit out of my life. All I need is a cause I believe in to make use of all this sacrifice. Although I have risks & challenges, I hope you believe in me as much as I believe in myself. Thank you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
