About this project
What is the Naturebytes Wildlife Cam Kit?
The Naturebytes Wildlife Cam Kit is a wildlife camera that anyone can build to take stealthy high definition images of wildlife. Beginner, expert, wildlife enthusiast or hacker, the Raspberry Pi powered kit is a fun way to develop your digital making skills and an exciting new insight into the natural world.
Wildlife camera trapping enables people to take amazing photographs of wild animals, including those that are normally camera shy. The Raspberry Pi computer at the heart of the kit makes the trap accessible and easily programmable. The beautifully designed weatherproof case can also accommodate future modular add-ons like night-vision and solar panel charging.
What can it do?
- HD images, video and slow-motion image capture
- It's motion sensitive, remote and portable
- It's a learning tool for key skills in coding, design and natural sciences.
- Upgradeable (eg. link to WiFi to send your instant cam images to your phone).
- Participate in Naturebytes challenges to work with conservationists and help survey and protect important species.
- Join the Naturebytes community, share images with friends and discover which animals have been caught on other Naturebytes cams near you.
- Open and hackable to enable innovative solutions to be developed by the community.
Who's this for?
The kit is simple enough for any newcomer to build and open for advanced makers and coders to modify and hack.
The kit has been built for:
- Wildlife fans
- Photography enthusiasts
- Digital Makers
- Teachers and educators
What's the need?
Developing skills in computing, coding, 3D design & printing are rapidly increasing in importance, but fun and purposeful activities to do this are sadly lacking. Naturebytes is taking a new approach, moving learning beyond the classroom and computer desk.
Another problem is that people are becoming more disconnected from nature. A large scale RSPB report revealed that only 1 in 5 children in the UK are connected to nature, or in other words, 4 in 5 children are lacking an appreciation and understanding of nature.
People often blame technology and computers for inactivity and kids not getting outdoors but Naturebytes is taking a new approach. We take cool technology and combine it with the fascination of wildlife to inspire everyone to learn new skills and engage in purposeful community activities. We show people how technology and wildlife are good for one another, not enemies!
We're creating an open community and you're invited
Naturebytes is for anyone that wants to participate.
Through this portal everyone will have the opportunity to share their data with scientists and conservationists to better understand and protect our wildlife. Key features of the online sharing platform include:
- Viewing and analysing data i.e. photos
- Coordinating new citizen science challenges and surveys for members to undertake
- Facilitating communication between wildlife scientists and citizen scientists
It's time to discover wildlife

What They Said
"I’m looking forward to the day when digital maker Kits Naturebytes are the must-buy Christmas present for the year" - Sylvia Lowe, Director of Innovation Lab, Nesta.
"Naturebytes have made the best Pi camera we've come across" - Raspberry Pi
Risks and challenges
The Naturebytes team have all of the necessary skills in hardware & software development, design, testing, manufacturing and shipping to deliver the rewards stated and to make the Wildlife Cam Kit available to all.
The challenge that we are addressing is the creation of the aluminium tool for the mass production of our Wildlife Cam Kit case. This is a highly technical and specialised piece of work. It takes at least three months to develop, test and complete the process but we have already identified and discussed the project with a leading company to create the tool.
We'll be providing regular progress updates to keep you informed every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
