About this project
THE FLIGHT LAMP
Flight Lamp is a substantial desk lamp with fine details and materials, that comes shipped flat in an 11"x17" envelope. The shade is laser cut from Spruce aircraft plywood, the dowels are birch hardwood, and the legs are either solid polished Brass or Copper. The materials and finish have been meticulously chosen to match their possible patinas. When the brass oxidizes, it darkens and will compliment its all black counterparts. As for the copper legs, they will turn a minty green, complimenting the mint stained shade. Like most objects that are meant to transcend generations, components of the Flight Lamp can be removed easily and cared for. The legs are easily removed for polishing if one wants to retain the mirrored finish of the brass or copper.
The Flight Lamp started as a project in my second year of design school. The project brief was simple, create something useful, using .8mm aircraft plywood, and it must fit into an 11x17" envelope. The result was The Flight Lamp. I drew inspiration from those small balsa wood airplanes that you build from a small envelope. I really liked the fact that after putting one of those planes together, you were left with something that didn't scream "I used to be flat packed!". Those planes have wings that extend from side to side and an elastic powered propeller. They also had little metal legs with red plastic wheels that added to its three dimensional characteristics. I really wanted to design a lamp that masked the fact that it was once flat packed even more than those little planes did. I wanted the Flight lamp to be a high end piece of lighting while still being conscious of the impact of shipping it on the environment. Not only do its unconstructed dimensions save space while shipping but it saves you money having it shipped.
The name Flight Lamp comes from all of its associations with flight. To begin with, its original inspiration came from toy planes. The material that the shade is made of is air craft ply wood usually used for making remote controlled airplanes. Last but not least, The flight lamps ability to ship cheaply and easily made the name choice quite simple.
The Flight lamp is a relatively simple product. It is made up of raw materials, lighting components, and one custom shaped part, the shade. The lamp shade is produced at a local laser cutter and as soon as the funding goal is met, the shades will start the process of cutting. The rest of the materials and components come from a variety of locations and will be ordered and delivered to my studio. Once the lighting components, dowels, and laser cut shades arrive at the studio, myself and a team of employees will begin assembling light fixtures, sanding and staining dowels and shades, and polishing metal legs. From there, all there is left is sending them out to you!

I have had several questions about the envelope and the packaging, the envelope is a recycled paper envelope lined with bubble wrap. The bulb is also wrapped in foam for further protection. Thanks for all the support so far!
*please ask about shipping on any rewards outside of Canada or the USA.
Risks and challenges
The Flight lamp is a relatively simple product consisting of mostly sized raw materials. After delivery of the materials they need finishing, grinding, polishing, sanding, staining, and assembling of the fixture components. There are no perceived challenges at this point other than getting the funding, so please donate!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
