*About me:

I am a NYC jazz flutist/composer. Living here I’ve felt like a “kid in a candy store” with non-stop opportunities to hear and play with incredible musicians. I have had the great fortune to tour in over 30 countries and have played with musicians from all over the world -- not only with jazz greats but with many top Latin, Brazilian, Indian and classical musicians (please see bio). These experiences have had a continuing impact on my composing which can be heard on my previous 4 CDs, and most importantly on my new recording, In This Life

*A brief band history:

I had recorded and led small groups for years with world-renowned players including Dave Douglas and Kenny Werner. After attending graduate school in jazz composition, I became hooked on writing for more “horns” and in 1999 started The Jamie Baum Septet. Lucky to have the same members for many years to write for, the band included some of NYC’s finest - Ralph Alessi, George Colligan, Douglas Yates and Jeff Hirshfield. We recorded two critically acclaimed CDs, with the most recent Solace on the Sunnyside label.

*The new CD:

While this recording is the third with my Septet (now Octet) and fifth as leader, I know this project is my best to date reflecting the coming together of many diverse influences and experiences from the past 10 years. The biggest influence comes from several tours to South Asia where I was touched viscerally by the sound of the tabla, Bansuri flute and vocal music.

Having been introduced to the music of the late Pakistani Qawwali* vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn, I was immediately hooked. Nusrat, while very well known in South Asia, became world famous through recordings by Ry Cooder, Peter Gabriel and even a video by Michael Jackson. You can find him on recordings or the many amazing videos on YouTube!

While I generally prefer to avoid the “buy now, pay later” plan, after performing at several high-profile venues including NYC’s Symphony Space, Roulette, Cornelia Street Cafe and the Winter JazzFest; The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (see photo below) and festivals in Europe, my band was more than ready to go into the studio and just couldn’t wait any longer! The time was right and so we recently laid down all 11 tracks.

You know, many bands write and record new music before going on tour, but with this project it has been the opposite. With the numerous opportunities we’d had to perform, everyone in the band had a chance to become really comfortable -- the music had a chance to develop in a very organic way -- resulting in something really special!

The new recording, In This Life, features: Jamie Baum - flutes, Amir ElSaffar – trumpet, Taylor Haskins - trumpet (on 3 tunes), Douglas Yates – alto sax/bass clarinet, Brad Shepik - guitar, Chris Komer - French horn, John Escreet – piano, Zack Lober – bass, Jeff Hirshfield – drums, Special Guest - percussion

*My Plan:

With your help, I will be able to add percussion overdubs, edit, mix, master, finish paying some of the musicians, promote and get this project out! My plan is to work very hard to get this all finished by the end of this year and out by early 2013. With your pledge, you will be the first to receive the recording before it is released to the general public!

This is my fifth self-produced CD (though all have been released on respected indie labels). Rest assured, your contributions will be well managed, well spent and the project will be completed on time as promised.

*Kickstarter and YOU:

As you might guess, it is extremely costly to do a recording with such a large band! It requires not just a larger than normal studio, but one of a high caliber. One with engineers who have the experience and understanding necessary to record such a unique instrumentation, and with the proper equipment to facilitate and compliment it. Once the recording part is finished, “hearing” the perfect balance of instruments during mixing sessions is an art unto itself. Next, hiring the right publicist can “make or break” the success of the recording, which translates into the possibility of coveted performance opportunities and tours, here and abroad.

A note about Kickstarter: We will only receive funds (and you will only be charged for your pledge) if we reach our minimum goal. It would be fantastic to exceed our goal, but when the clock strikes midnight on our last day of fund-raising, if we haven’t met the minimum, no money will be transacted and the project will not receive any of the funds!

*Where your money will go:

-Producer & Musician Fees (some band members have been generous enough to wait to be paid)

-Special Guest Percussionist Fee

-Recording Studio Costs: engineers, 2 days recording, 2 days fixes and overdubs, 4 days editing, mixing & mastering; piano tunings, Fender Rhodes rental, misc. expenses

-Promotion Fees: Publicist fees, Radio Promoter fees, promotion expenses (including CDs to be sent out for promotion, postage & phone costs, publicity photos & EPK, etc.)

*Why Kickstarter?

The music industry has changed tremendously over the past ten to fifteen years! With the diminishing tide of label-funded recordings and government-funded artist grants, musicians have had to become creative in finding alternative resources. Kickstarter has become a viable and respected avenue for that.

Thank you so much for your time, interest, support and for considering joining me on this artistic journey! I would be so appreciative if you would send this link on to your friends and anyone you think might be interested!

Press Quotes:

“…on a cold night in January this reviewer decided to experience the Jamie Baum Septet at Joe’s Pub in the east village. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Each tune was gripping, and played to perfection by the ensemble. The best compliment that can be given to such compositional creativity is that all concept of the passage of time was lost…I had been transported…for what seemed like precious few moments, but it was enough to leave me breathless and wanting more.” – All About Jazz, NYC

“Baum is that rare double-threat: a musician who can play and write equally well. Her gift for combining complexity with viscerally appealing rhythms and attractive melodies is certainly uncommon.” -- Jazziz Magazine

"Jamie Baum has developed a strong, personal sound with almost flawless intonation...The leader is really rather unique; she is a fine composer, a technically accomplished flautist and she has ideas and imagination in abundance. Many players have some of these qualities but few possess them all." -- Jazz Journal International (U.K.)

"Jamie Baum exhibits remarkable artistic facility as composer/arranger/bandleader/flutist. " --- DownBeat Magazine

"Jamie Baum has a real gift for composition...Her intonation is spot-on perfect and her compositions never fail to be original and inventive...she obviously has a flair for melody." -- Cadance Jazz Magazine

“Baum is one of the most accomplished jazz flutists of her generation. What sets her apart is the beauty of her tone combined with what I can only call a weightiness-like a baseball pitcher who throws a “heavy” fastball that makes it almost unhittable. Think gravitas, not overbearing.” – Audiophile Audition

“The flutist Baum confirmed at the Bragajazz Festival to be one of the more original revelations of the new jazz. Excellent musicians, wonderful compositions.” -- Diario De Noticias (Lisbon)

“When Jamie Baum releases a new album, many modern jazz aficionados take notice. Baum's musical journey offers the drama and intensity of a cinematic thriller or cliffhanger, which is sure to keep her audience at the edge of their seats.” – AllAboutJazz.com

“She’s an improviser of note, matching wits on her four CDs with such distinguished colleagues as Dave Douglas, Randy Brecker, Kenny Werner.”  – Toronto Life

"(Baum) demonstrates again and again (that) jazz flute can be powerfully expressive in the right hands. There isn't a moment here where the flute seems superfluous to the setting, as if it were tacked on for merely ornamental purposes. Rather it maintains a crucial role in the mix, providing not just melodic pleasure and contrasting colors but a compelling emotional tension, as well....." -- The Washington Post
