@Donanl — the reward should have arrived in California before Christmas. Since it hasn't been returned yet, maybe it's still at your local post office. Do you mind checking? I will also check here at our end and send you a private message.

@Taniguchi — I'm afraid based on my record we haven't printed or sent you any rewards because you requested a refund. Let's talk privately as I can't seem to be able to refund using the Kickstarter system, only PayPal. Hope that's ok

    5. Liviu Berechet Antoni Creator on January 13, 2016

      Hey Ralph,

The Calibration page can be found in the WIKI section on Hacker.AGVR — in the same place where the assembly article was :)

Regarding apps: It's difficult to share links to the App Store and Google Play. But if you just search for VR, Altergaze or Google Cardboard you should find plenty of apps. Depending on the development team and your phone model, some might work perfectly with perfect visuals, others might be a bit slow — same as with PC games :)

      Hi Liviu,
Thanks for the update I can see what I have missed now. Can you do the same for the calibration process ? Although you are referring to lenses A, B and C, where as the only thing I can see on the lenses is a black dot (some have two and others three). Does it correspond to the phone holder piece number 1 (respectively 2 and 3) ?
I can't remember the day I choose the black color, red would have been nice but it's not that important. Thanks.

    8. Liviu Berechet Antoni Creator on December 28, 2015

@Stephen, awww... sad times. Maybe you can find a friend that has one already or check for a local fab-lab or hack-lab.

@benedicte, sorry for the inconvenience, when I wrote the text I wrote it with the 3D printer owners in mind — if you download the files, they are named just like the text: phone holder 01, 02 etc. . I just updated the text, including photos of the assembly process. Regarding the colours, for the £50 and £75 rewards there were only 5 colours to pick from — I've sent out a form some time ago that you probably filled in (unless I emailed / PM you. Based on our records you selected black, hope that's ok.

So can you please post pictures and videos of this whole process. Besides I thought we would be able to choose the color of the printing parts but I have never been asked for this.

In posted this comment in an Oct update 45, but I don't think many will read it there, so I'm reposting here as its more relevant. Sorry for double posting...

I met with Liviu last week for a beer and he gave me the kit directly ! He's a great guy and I recommend you meet with him if you have the opportunity. I'm really happy I've contributed to this project.
I've been using the glasses for 4 days now, and I find the quality of the lenses the real differentiator. I've used the google cardboard (pretty bad) and I've compared with a friend that bought the Vigica headset. Altergaze has for sure better optics, but is harder to calibrate. The Vigica did look sharper but "smaller" (the image didn't take all your field view as Altergaze). The sharpness could also depend on the Vigica being sealed from external light (we were in a restaurant with lots of light).
Anyway I just wanted to share my first impressions.
If you want to have a sneak peek I've uploaded an unboxing video on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch…)

Dear Team Prime, your message comes as a huge surprise!

Your headset was sent over 6 months ago — together with the Feb / March batch. Not sure what happened, as we didn't do tracking for UK (since we've never heard any bad things about Royal Mail). I'll PM you and send you another headset this weekend. I guess we should have emailed everyone we sent the reward to in order to ask if it arrived ok... :(

Please, if there is anyone in the same situation send me a private message or email! — we always check those before shipping. Messages here in the comment section can get easily overlooked.

So unless we already talked via mail or PM — and know what the problem is or received an unfortunate email telling you that the headset was returned to us due to inconsistent / insufficient information — please do get in touch!

All rewards over £100 should have arrived!

      Kind regards ~

    21. Team Prime on October 23, 2015

      Hi Altergaze gang!

Thanks for the update on the ongoing projects you're undertaking.

I was wondering what the ship date is for UK people for the actual glasses? I don't want a refund, I gave you the money in good faith that you'd do something awesome with it, and I would be glad to receive the "reward" if it came to pass. I've actually never received anything I've pledge for on Kickstarter so this is no surprise. I've actually stopped backing things now for that exact reason.

It's quite painful to see updates coming through every time about your side projects and a thing none of us can use but all really wanted (hence backing it). Maybe an update on shipping dates would be better for your backers until you do ship?

      Looking forward to your reply,
      Thayer

    22. zegerman1942 on September 29, 2015

Thank you for the quick response and thank you for working on a refund. I did not need the headset for development. I just felt that 11 months after the initial delivery date, it would have been good to get the rewards promised for backing. I felt that I had been patient enough to wait this long (being fully aware that Kickstarter is not like ordering something online).

    23. Liviu Berechet Antoni Creator on September 29, 2015

I'm sorry you feel that way.

As mentioned in the private message, we vividly asked on Kickstarter to message us if you need a headset for development (as we have sent to a bunch of other backers and companies that messaged us close to a year ago). I guess you probably missed the messages and hence your frustration.

As expressed in my last update, our objectives with Altergaze:
      • is to create an open-source headset that is universally compatible with any smartphone model, with the same optical quality of Oculus / Gear VR but using 3D printing (ie, a fraction of the price that will only go down as 3D printing tech advances)

      • it's equality about creating the community that will promote and introduce people to VR in an organic matter (person to person) resulting in more users in this space (that would otherwise not be target by the big corporations because they don't represent profits for them) and an overall better first experience for the end user

Unfortunately we don't have the funds Facebook or Samsung has, so our reaction time might not be as good as the big corporations you are compering us to. But we compensate by being a bit more people orientated, future thinking and passion driven rather than profits orientated (not judging our competitors, just enforcing why we made Altergaze and what drives us).

Which is probably the same reason you prefer working on amazing and passion driven independent games for VR rather than just going to work for Facebook :)

PS: We haven't posted any updates because we are working day and night for over 2 months on launching the 3D printing website and peeping the last batch of rewards.

    24. zegerman1942 on September 29, 2015

Additional Note Liviu: I have sent you a message via Kickstarter and requested a full refund.

    25. zegerman1942 on September 29, 2015

What is the status of this now? I have sent a mail 2 months ago, never received an answer. No updates, almost a year late now. As a matter of fact, with the GearVR becoming available at 90 GBP soon, this has become totally obsolete. I honestly don't care about 3D Hub or anything else at this point, you have been failing to provide backers with what they paid for. Absolute disgrace and I will be working towards getting my money back.

    26. Liviu Berechet Antoni Creator on September 18, 2015

      Hey Lucas,

Yes, I completely agree. As mentioned in the last update, we are making the website public and sending out all the rewards before the end of this month (the next 2 weeks).

To be honest, I feel an urge to just post the link now :))) - but I have to do some tidy up otherwise the 3D printing website will be a bit confusing. We are just adding some additional features on the STL packaging scripts and we will post a backers only update for you guys to check the website out (and to start downloading and printing if you want).

We've also started developing an integration with new 3D Hub's teleport API (https://www.3dhubs.com/teleport). We are extremely excited about what 3D Hubs has done, and we like to think that this Kickstarter campaign is one of the tings that motivated them to develop their API the way they did.

      Really exciting times :)

      Kind regards

      Hi Liviu,

your last update was two months ago. I really think that if you have the lenses and the files then you need to ship asap.

You can't get a community to form unless people are building the device and talking about it.

      Hey Lucian,

Sorry for taking this long to reply. This being our first time to issue a refund we had to enquire with Kickstarter regarding their refund policy. Turns out, they provide a fairly good refund system. This means the refund will be returned on the account you used to back us up with, hope that’s ok. You should receive an email from Kickstarter very soon.

We hope this resolution will compensate for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we are deeply sorry that you were disappointed with Altergaze. We try and learn from our mistakes and we will do our best to insure such incidents won’t repeat.

We thank you for your all your support and are really sad to see you go.

You really want to give an extra, but you are still lacking the basic.
1 year late and you are still dreaming about what Altergaze could be.
I think you need to deliver the rest of glasses and lenses. You won't have a community based on the hype.
If you have a great product, you will have many 3d printer owners willing to produce Altergaze, don't worry about it.

We know it's not a simple STL on thingiverse, but it can be while you finish your platform. If you make a customizable script or even upload STL for the major phones (you probably already have it), you will be ahead of the other thingiverse VR projects. Add that to your research and lenses, you have a really good product, with software to back it.

Looks like you are stuck, feeling bad that the money could not be enough to launch your idea with all the bells and whistles, but you have to move on with what you got.

Just launch it before it's too late. (If it's not already)

      PS. Sorry about my english

    36. Liviu Berechet Antoni Creator on July 17, 2015

      @costas

Based on what we've experienced over this past year from attending events, meet-ups and pitching Altergaze, the adoption by 3d printer owners doesn't really seem to be an obstacle. Even if some don't see themselves as selling their own headsets, most people said they would still buy a pack or two just for the experience of building something different with their 3D printers. And if you think it like that, 200.000 3d printer owners is still a significant number (especially if you consider that a year ago there were less than half that number of printers in the world). However I think Altergaze has the potential to be more than just a company that sells lenses. The struggling question is how do we create value for our users (besides getting a kick ass unique headset). Ideally that added value is the ability to sell their own headsets (assuming that the majority of our users have a 3D printer or are considering buying one), but if that's not the reason why they are looking / buying into Altergaze, what else can we offer to create that extra value? - that's the real question we've been facing. But I guess that answer will probably come from the community itself. So the logical next step is to do our best to launch this in the best format we can, ensure we are ready to meet demand for lenses and be ready to stir and adapt the company / platform in the right direction, based on everyone's feedback,

      @Lucas

Thank you so much, but don't worry about it. Of course we will cover the postage ourselves. Regarding your previous comment, maybe we should do pre-orders at first...

      @Lucian

I don't want a refund. This is a KS. I gave you some money to help you get your idea off the ground because I thought you were worth a punt. You are learning how to build a business. Perhaps this one will work or not, but you have learned lots along the way.

I would like to have my lenses and the files so I can print the glasses and show them to other people. I will pay postage to get the lenses.

I think you should do this for all the backers even if the website is not ready yet.

      Don't give up.

I remember we had a conversation many months ago, but I don't remember asking or waiting for a refund. Now, I do. I am sorry, but now I am asking for a refund.

Concerning the whole concept as it evolved, I would dare to say that it is a little bit ahead of its time. I mean that the idea could work if the 3d printing parameters ( material costs, printing time vs importance of printed object vs accessibility of already existed object) were in favor , this project could have been a better success. Maybe this is the reason that although there are so many printer owners, very few are willing to participate in an Idea like yours.
I really hope you find your investors and supporters.

    40. Liviu Berechet Antoni Creator on July 16, 2015

      @analog monster,
Completely understand and appreciate your patience. As mentioned, we already have your headset printed (so we will send you everything you backed us up for). We are working on sorting out the logistics. I know you are UK based, and this shouldn't affect you, but we would prefer sending everything all at once with a logistics partner. Hope you understand. I will PM you in a few days though.

      @costas,
As I explained quite a few times now, Altergaze is not just a headset or a STL file that you can just upload to thingiverse. It could be, but that’s not what set out to make (otherwise we wouldn't have made a KS campaign). Altergaze is about the concept of a community for custom made, 3D printed VR headsets / equipment. You can build another Amazon / eBay / Facebook / Thingiverse / AirBnB etc in less than a day. In fact, you can find Joomla templates for $50 for pretty much any established website. But it’s the number of people sharing, contributing and discussing ideas within a community that give exponential growth to a brand, long term adoption to a product and facilitates long term development towards future applications, VR experiences and new product development. All of that can't be built in a day. But don't worry about it, I will send you a refund (I think I already offer you a refund, no?)

      A penny for my thoughts....
My initial fears of your project hitting the iceberg.. Sadly comes true.

      The story is simple:
      What is offering your idea?
It offers the opportunity to have a VR using a smart phone
      Is it innovative?
Yes, 1 1/2 years ago, now I can buy a plastic VR system from banggood or aliexpress at a fraction of cost
      Is it cheap?
Those from banggood are cheaper and ready to use
      Is it easy to use?
Those from banggood HAVE ELASTIC BELTS to mount it on head properly. Your arltergaze system need one hand to hold it on
Is there any competitive advantage for the arltergaze?
      It's "top quality" lenses
      Is it enough?
      Sadly no
What can a user do after purchasing the altergaze?
Take the lenses and mount them on the cheap-but more comfortable- banggood headsets for smartphones
      Is this project viable?
I could be, but it has lost time... 3d printing is costly and time consuming than buying a Chinese headset.

This q&a goes to the creator in order to facilitate his decision.
I would appreciate if you could refund me
      Thnx

Trying to be patient, however I backed this project thinking that it would be a pretty quick turn around, as all I really ordered was the lenses and the ability to download and print the frame for myself. Expected delivery was November 2014 - Altergaze now feels dated and like I wasted my money. I expect a shipment or refund soon. Although I understand kickstarter isn't necessarily a "shop", I really was excited to see Altergaze make a difference in the VR market. But the idea of mass 3D printing headsets hasn't gotten any media coverage that Ive seen aside from what's shared here, and now it's been almost 2 months since any update.

Liviu, please update more frequently. This is a common mistake that I have seen - creators just leave their backers in the dark, which leads to nothing but frustration and comments probably like mine, maybe not as polite (maybe more, my apologies for being rude!!!). Just give frequent updates as to what's up. I still expect my reward for backing, but it no longer means to me what it did a year and two months ago.
