What is Designers Inbetween?
Designers Inbetween is a documentary that explores the entrepreneurial opportunities in Hong Kong, the world’s third largest financial centre and uncovering the challenges faced when building a start-up company. It shows the real startup life; where the risk, hard work, and pressure challenges founders everyday.
Weaving together interviews from both ends of the spectrum, from a range of start ups to seasoned professionals discuss how they built their company and their lives as an entrepreneur in Hong Kong. Designers Inbetween has created an inspiring vision to educate designers and entrepreneurs on the ins and outs, ups and downs, successes and failures of starting and building a company.
In addition, the documentary also uncovers how the industry in Hong Kong contrasts from the West and the rest of Asia. Exploring exciting untold stories of what it is like for a Westerner to do business with factory owners in China. Business deals are built around lunch and written on napkins rather than lawyers and contracts.
Who are we?
Jonathan Ramalho and Oliver Lehtonen, are two European design students blown away by the pace of the city and the entrepreneurial spirit whilst on an exchange programme in Hong Kong.
Believing it was time that someone captured the phenomenal spirit, in order to motivate other young people and designers to explore the possibilities of entrepreneurship. This lead to an intensive bootstrapping adventure through Hong Kong’s creative industries and into the wildness of China’s manufacturing.Visa’s having expired, the two had to leave and come back to Europe to complete their final year at university in Finland and the UK.
Having gone through the material, the realisation came that the team had something very special. However, the story was not complete. There were a number of influential and important people missing, including: Michael Young, the world famous product designer, VC Simon Squibb and a rare feature from Henry Steiner (the designer behind the HSBC logo). Having graduated and worked at a their placement, enough money was raised to travel back to Hong Kong to capture the missing pieces.
A couple of months after their first filming trip, Bloomberg filed a report acknowledging Hong Kong as the number one place to start a business: timing could not have been better.
Since 2013, the duo have met a number of influential and inspiring people, travelling all over Hong Kong, exploring factories in mainland China and capturing over 40 incredible interviews. Having caught the East’s meets West fusion that has created the story behind Designers Inbetween.

Why We Need Your Help
We have invested everything we have in all the filming, storylines and rough edits but in order to get the documentary finished through post production with a professional flair we can't do it alone, we need your help.
So far we have collected over 50 hours of footage, unravelling into inspiring and educational material; ranging from idea generation, to how to work with manufactures in China topped with insights on how to execute.
The money raised on Kickstarter will mean a professional production house can produce high quality post production with colour grading, sound processing and motion graphics and add a sound track (the right music is so important!). This will also allow us to make it our the documentary’s first Global Premier!
Please share this Kickstarter and tell your friends about the Designers Inbetween project. Designers Inbetween hopes to teach and inspire designers and you dreamers who are out there!
