A new lotería!
The game I am asking you to help bring to fruition is a fun and educational departure from the traditional lotería. It consists of 60 linoleum print images I created between 1999 and 2001 in Mexico illustrating traditional "sones" (songs) from Veracruz, custom printed on 8 playing boards at Lunar Caustic Press in Toronto, using the letter press technique.
It will also include a deck of 60 illustrated cards, printed with the new verses written specially for the playing of the game. Each verse is an "adivinanza" (riddle) with the title coming at the very end or poetically insinuated. The game is played by reciting or singing the verses.
Al atravezar la luna - su silueta se dibuja.
Dicen que es una hechicera - y otros le llaman......LA BRUJA.
Also included is a CD I will record of the 60 sones jarochos that are part of this lotería. Listening to the tracks on "shuffle" mode provides a novel way to play the game while listening to the music and poetry.
How I got started
It all began when I lived in Santiago Tuxtla, Veracruz in 1999 during a glorious year spent learning from veteran musicians in the countryside.
This was where I was inspired to illustrate the repertoire of traditional songs that have been played in the region for centuries. It took me three years to produce the 60 linoleum prints which I decided to transform into a new version of the traditional Mexican "lotería" game.
In 2001 I was able to produce a modest edition of the loteria which quickly went out of print. Since then I have continued to perfect the game by performing it at all kinds of festivals and venues such as cafes, libraries, parks and universities. The activity involves me singing each song as it is drawn from the deck of cards. However, the loteria jarocha has not been available for people to take home with them. At l am ready to put all the pieces together and provide you with this special edition.
Here are some of the rewards I am offering to supporters:
"LA BRUJA" Limited edition silkscreen print on 100% cotton paper. Signed edition of 10 printed at Kid Icarus in Toronto. 18" X 24". Only available here.

Risks and challenges
We have made our funding goal somewhat lower than the cost of the project when shipping, kickstarter fees and other expenses are taken into account. If we exceed the goal then that will help. If not we are planning to do some fundraising concerts with my group Cafe Con Pan before the end of the summer.
We are getting ready to record the CD that used to play the loteria. The challenge of recording such a large number of sones is daunting. Several of them are practically unknown. I feel confident because I have been singing them as part of my performances for over a decade. The struggle to refine the verses for the recording is in the final stage. I sing them again and again and make adjustments until I am sure that they work musically and poetically within the particular context of each son jarocho. My intent is that the audio component will make this special edition of the loteria a valuable educational tool.
I am also putting the final touches on the design of the boards and cards so that the visual appeal of the game will be utmost. I am excited to work with Lunar Caustic Press where I know they won't settle for less than exquisite printing quality. You may be faced with the dilemma of whether to play the game or frame it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
