About

Omega is the result of three passions colliding into one: Art, the Environment, and Video Games. The game will be released for PC and will focus heavily on encouraging player choice and experimentation, allowing you to craft your own preferred play-style. It features a unique and attractive art style instead of opting for an 8 or 16-bit retro theme, and exploration of a variety of natural environments is a key theme for the title.

In Omega, an unknown corruption is infecting the planet. Humanity has mysteriously vanished, animals are falling prey to insanity, and a young wolf awakens to find he has been gifted with the powers of the elements. A beacon of light has appeared atop a distant mountain rumoured to be home to an oracle, and if anyone can provide an explanation, and perhaps even a solution, for these events… it's her.

So, with the blessing of his pack, the wolf sets out on a journey to the top of this distant mountain. But while his destination is already decided, his adventure is most certainly not.

Exploration – Unlike many other platformers, there are no direct paths or optimal routes in Omega. Instead, levels feature multiple routes to explore, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Exploration is rewarded, with each route designed to feel unique in both how it plays and how it looks

Elemental Abilities – While most platformers featuring powers place them at specific points in every level (as power-ups), Omega’s powers are the elements. These can be used whenever you want, wherever you want, and however you want. There are multiple elemental abilities, with the option to upgrade them and unlock new abilities, allowing you to customize your wolf’s elemental prowess as you progress through the game.

Fire abilities are offensive, water abilities are defensive, wind abilities grant speed and mobility, and earth abilities call upon nature for assistance – rooting enemies, destroying obstacles, and opening up new paths. You can mix and match these abilities, stringing them together, or focus on using and upgrading a specific elemental branch. It's entirely up to you, and you will be able to play the game differently based on the elements that you focus on.

Medals – To encourage experimentation of these abilities and play-styles, a medal system rewards you for your actions at the end of each level. These add to your final point score, and are awarded for a huge variety of accomplishments. Killing one of each enemy; killing every enemy in the level; completing a pacifist run and not killing a single enemy – all reward you with medals, some worth more points than others. Skilled use of your elemental abilities; limiting yourself to one, two, or three elements; even not using any elements at all, will reward you with medals.

Taking your time to explore a level will reward you with medals, and executing a speed run to finish a level quickly will also reward you with medals. Essentially, if you play well you'll get a high score, regardless of the play-style you use to achieve that. And achieving a high enough score (5000 points in the playable demo) will reward you with a Red Mote for upgrading your abilities or unlocking new abilities. There are four Red Motes in each level – three hidden in the level itself, and the fourth only obtainable by achieving a high score. So for those of you that love replayability and perfecting your gameplay – you'll be the players with the most powerful wolves as a result of that honed skill.

To Summarize – The goal with Omega is to create a game that really captures a great player choice-driven experience, where you are provided with a broad array of tools and it is entirely up to you how to use them. The story will reward exploration by being told through visual elements as much as through cut-scenes, so that players who take the time to explore and pay attention to their environments will uncover additional clues and information about the on-going events. Finally, the art style is designed to pull the whole experience together by providing an attractive world to engage with.

Creating a detailed and polished game takes a lot of time, and without being able to commit to full-time development it won't be feasible to bring this project to life. The art and animations in particular are incredibly time consuming, but can bring so much life to a game that I feel it is worth pursuing. The gameplay is going to take a lot of effort to balance, but again I feel that player choice is such an important aspect of what makes video games such a unique entertainment medium, that the time spent balancing and creating the tools for a more player-driven experience is incredibly important. Finally, there are some aspects of development that are not achievable by a single person, and contractors will need to be paid, particularly for the creation of music and sound effects.

The costs of living, the payment of contractors, the fees that Kickstarter require, the tax taken from Kickstarter funding, and the production of materials from the Reward Tiers, mean that a goal of £20,000 is the minimum required for just over a year of full-time development on Omega. Optimistically, Omega will be completed sooner than August 2014, but I want to do this right, without cutting any corners, so that Omega is developed as the game we want it to be. Throughout the development process so far I have learned that any problem can be overcome and exists purely as a challenge. There is still a lot of work left to do, and no doubt a lot of unforseen problems yet to arise: £20,000 may be a slightly higher goal than I would like, but it guarantees that if this project is successfully funded that it's not a case of “if” Omega will be completed, but “when”. And that is the least you deserve if you back the game.

A digital copy of Omega, DRM free, upon completion of development! Essentially, you are pre-ordering the game, and assisting with its development at the same time. Thank you!

Omega's soundtrack will carry a unique Celtic-inspired theme.

Presentation is incredibly important for physical items, so here is a render of what the final product should look like:

(£60) ART AND DESIGN BOOK –

You will receive a physical copy of Omega's Art and Design book, featuring concept art, sketches and studies. This book will also document the development process of Omega, covering the implementation and iteration of art work, level design, abilities, and generally acting as a written documentary of Omega's creation. This should be useful to other aspiring game developers, artists or otherwise. You will also receive everything from the BETA TESTER tier.

Presentation is incredibly important for physical items, so here is a render of what the final product should look like:

(£120) COLLECTOR'S EDITION –

You will receive physical copies of the game, soundtrack, and the art and design book. All packaged inside a beautifully presented collector's box. Additionally, this version of Omega will feature unique main menu artwork, so you will never forget how exclusive this version of the game is! Presentation is incredibly important for physical items, so here is a render of what the final product should look like:

(£250) CONCEPT ART –

I will create a unique piece of concept art for Omega, under your direction and creative vision. You can be as detailed or as vague as you like with the description! This piece will be sent to you personally, and no-one else. However, it will also appear prominently in the Art and Design book, with your name if you consent to its use, to thank you for your generous donation. Everyone with the digital or physical art book will be able to see your design and your dedication to Omega.

You will also receive everything from the Collector's Edition tier (including the beta testing access).

(£500) DESIGN YOUR WOLF –

I will work alongside you to create your own unique wolf design. In-game, other players will see this wolf as a part of their pack, and you alone will have the exclusive option of being able to choose to play as the default Omega wolf, or as your own wolf. Secondly, I will create some detailed concept art for this wolf that will feature prominently in the Art and Design book along with your name (should you consent to its use) so that everyone else who owns the digital or physical copy of the art book can see your design and your dedication to Omega.

LIMITED to 5 backers: Animations are a time consuming process, and the wolf pack can only be so big!

You will also receive everything from the Collector's Edition tier (including the beta testing access).

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk for Omega’s development will be the timeframe. It is incredibly difficult to predict how long development will take, which is precisely why a late completion date of August 2014 has been estimated. Problems and challenges are inevitable in any project, so I refuse to provide an optimistic completion date simply to lower the funding requirement for Omega. If you are generous and supportive enough to back this project, then the least you deserve is the peace of mind that Omega is highly likely to be successfully developed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments section - I’m a friendly British chap, and will be more than happy to discuss Omega with you!

Thank you for your time and your consideration! And if you choose to back Omega, you have my ever-lasting gratitude! It’s going to be a great ride.
