My Story

Hi! I’m Eric Hanson, thank you for visiting my Kickstarter page!

Music has always been a part of my life. My great-grandfather was a band director, trumpeter, and regular real-life “Music Man” bringing music to small towns and forming bands wherever he went. My grandfather also played trumpet and toured with his jazz band all over the Western United States playing for dances. I began singing in the church choir at about eight years old and started playing trumpet shortly thereafter. Growing up I would sneak my dad’s soundtrack tapes into my room and couldn’t go to sleep without listening to them on my Walkman. Though the bulk of my early training was on the trumpet, from the time I started really singing in choir and music theater I knew that my career path would never be the same. By the time I was seventeen I was already singing professionally.

Early on in my training at Brigham Young University I realized that with some careful development I had the potential to share something in the art music and opera world.  It was with great joy that I began to find more and more work in opera roles, concerts and recitals all through my bachelors degree training at BYU, my masters degree at Florida State, and finally my doctorate in musical arts degree from the University of Southern California.  Now as an Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of Texas at El Paso I have the opportunity to share my talents with an even large audience.

Just like my great-grandfather, I feel that participating in good music as a performer and as a listener can enrich our lives and enhance our communities. A project like this not only allows me to work with and employ many amazing musicians - it also allows me to connect in a very personal way with all of my friends, family, fans, and listeners in general.

Several months ago during rehearsals for a gala concert event hosted by El Paso Opera, I was approached by our conductor, the amazingly talented Maestro Karl Shymanovitz about the possibility of doing a recital together. Of course I leapt at this opportunity, and after months of preparation and planning we pulled it off!

On March 30th just a short time ago we performed together in a recital that must go down as one of the most fulfilling musical experiences of my career. From rehearsal to performance working with Maestro Shymanovitz was pure musical bliss.

It didn’t take us long to realize that one performance would simply not be enough, and we are happy to announce that we have decided to take our show on the road, to Europe!

The Project

We chose two locations for this “tour” that have special meaning to each of us.

First, we will perform in my hometown of Heidelberg, Germany. My old high school and the local American army bases are closing and will be leaving behind more the 60 years of beautiful memories. Our recital will actually take place just a few days before their final graduation and will be recorded using state-of-the-art audio and video equipment.

Then, we will travel to the gorgeous and iconic Florence, Italy (where Maestro lives) for our final performance.

Our program will feature many of the highlights from our last recital, including a set of beautiful American & British Song, music theater favorites such as “Serenade” from Heidelberg’s own operetta “The Student Prince”, and two new sets of German and Italian songs. I’m not sure I have ever been so excited about a program.
It is surely not to be missed!

Expenses for even a brief recital tour like this one are significant, and I need your help. That’s why I am here! Between your investment and my own, I am confident that we can make this a reality. $8,000 is my goal. This covers travel expenses, accommodations, and recording and production costs.

How does Kickstarter work? Quite simply I set a financial goal based on the cost of the trip to cover expenses such as travel, hotels, food, recording engineers, fees, etc., and offer you the opportunity to help fund the project at different levels, or tiers, based on what you can afford. You are only charged if and when we meet our minimum goal of $8000. All payments will be made through Amazon.com, a partner of Kickstarter!

I am so grateful for the magic of Kickstarter, and how it allows to me to share in this wonderful opportunity with all of you! I also always appreciate it when the projects I back are filled with updates as they move through the process, especially after funding. I will definitely do the same. * Minor side note...It may look like I’ve not backed a project in the past, but know that my wife and I choose projects and then she always signs us up under her name!

To thank you for backing me and this project, you receive rewards (outlined below) based on your pledge level.

*Heidelberg Farewell Multimedia CD Since I will be in Heidelberg for the closure ceremonies and final graduation, I will be using this opportunity to take lots of pictures and videos of the ceremonies, faculty, staff, significant locations (i.e. the Castle, the school, downtown, etc.) and compiling it in a “Heidelberg Farewell” presentation. For those who contribute at this Tier, please send requests of teachers you would like interviewed (include any particular questions you would have me ask them beyond the standard “what are you favorite memories?”, “what will you miss most?”, etc.). I will try my best to accommodate all requests, including locations you would like me to visit (and photograph!).

When will the recitals be performed? Both recitals are scheduled for June of this year!

What happens if we pass the goal? If we pass the goal, I will make more albums! There will be more rewards for you as backers! I have three different stretch goals and exciting things in line for each.

STRETCH GOALS!

Stretch Goal #1: $12,000

Tiers of $50 or more will receive a digital SECOND album of Schumann works and my own song cycle, a composition of Robert Louis Stevenson poetry from “A Child’s Garden of Verse”, to be recorded after returning from the Recital Tour.

plus ALL TIERS will receive 2 bonus tracks on the Recital Album
AND a Signed Recital Photo Postcard

Stretch Goal #2: $16,000

ALL TIERS will receive a physical, signed Jewel Case & Booklet copy of the SECOND album listed above (Schumann & Hanson song cycles)
plus Tiers of $150 or more will receive a Signed Recital Poster

Stretch Goal #3: $20,000

More to come on this. I’ve got a special surprise brewing...

Let’s get the word out! Please help share this amazing experience with your friends and family. Together we can make this a reality and enjoy all that will come of this project.

Risks and challenges

There are always risk associated in the recording of a live performance. There can be unforeseen challenges and circumstances that arise. In order to minimize this risk, we have arranged for separate recording sessions to allow for any potential mishaps.
