About this project
We live in divisive times when politics and culture seem to be shifting at a fast pace, while our own personal lives are changing as well. This can lead to a sense of loneliness and anxiety about what the future will hold for us. It doesn’t help that much of the socials issues we face are hard identify and easy to disagree over. That’s why Citizens Of Culture has been dedicated to carving out space for art, introspection, learning, and collaboration in our gallery space Nous Tous in Los Angeles.
This year, we’re hoping to expand our program and add digital content to the work we are already doing in the gallery. We’ve gotten great feedback about the work we’ve done so far, and want to make it accessible to people who are not physically located in Los Angeles, so we will be investing and filming and live streaming our events online this year, and for that we need your help.
Why is this important?
The work we do locally established a model for community building that is replicable and scalable to create social solutions in cities everywhere. By getting together each other in person we strengthen connection, facilitate belonging and create spaces for introspection and compassion.
Art creates a context of openness and by approaching social change from the personal level we engage diverse stakeholders in developing robust solutions that work for all.
About the space.
5 years ago we began hosting pop up brunches all over Los Angeles to connect interested, creative people in the city. From there we began hosting larger events with more intentional topics that ranged from technology, money, relationships, and religion. For the past 2 years Nous Tous Gallery has been a place where people from all walks of life come to feel a sense of connection and share their experiences through film, music, visual art, literature, movement, and numbers. We have limitations on the number of people we can host and the kinds of programs we can offer so this next phase is about growth!
What will your contribution support?
Larger space and expanding existing programs to larger audience. Talking Circles, Personal/ Professional Development Workshops, Free Arts Programs Webinars, live stream of events, and video content to reach those that can not physically attend event in Los Angeles. Our expanded goals will allow for paid staff, artists grants, and other economic development programs related to the arts and entrepreneurship.
Citizens of Culture has always been a community built and supported project we need to use economic models reflect our values. Crowdfunding affirms the participation of our participants and decentralizes access to supporting the arts, regardless of pedigree. The work we do is for public good, and requires public support.
Risks and challenges
The challenge we face is growing at the right pace so as to not incur stress on the organization or its members. We all want to see change happen quickly but we can not allow ourselves to rush, nor can we afford to wait.
Like any organization or community we must strike the balance of honoring our core principles and being economically sustainable so we must manage our resources responsibly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
