But I survived, and now I want to collect all of that inky goodness between two covers and present them to you, along with some other cards, prints, and (yes!) books thrown in just to say “thanks!”

The Project

One Year After will be an 8.5x11, soft-cover edition, all black and white. There will be one sketch per page, reproduced at the original size (5.5x7.5). Each image will have an accompanying annotation, giving some thoughts about why that particular image was done, observations on the techniques used or the inspiration behind the piece. The annotations are already written (over 15,000 words).

There will also be an Introduction, where I tell a little about why the project happen and how living in China during that time affected the subject matter and production. The book will be divided into two sections. Section One will feature work done only with pens (January through August), while Section Two (September through December) will feature both pen and brush work, sometimes on the same image.

Most sketchbooks use a low grade paper, but I want to make a quality book, using heavy stock paper with a laminated cover. Including the Introduction, Chapter pages, and the 183 images, we are looking at 190 pages. Of course, the more that is pledged, the better the book will be in quality.

Below is a video containing every sketch that will be included in the book, followed by the "working" cover design:

Who Am I?

Between 1987 and 2002, my illustrations appeared in books, games, and magazines. Until 2009, I might have met you at one of the hundreds of Fantasy/Science-Fiction/Gaming Conventions across the U.S., or, during the 10 years I co-owned Gotland Gallery at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. I’ve published dozens of fine art limited-edition prints, cards, and a few books through Sharayah Press, and continue to display regularly at galleries and other venues. I currently live in the Seattle area.

From 2010 to 2013, I lived in Changsha, China, where, among other pursuits, I studied traditional Chinese ink painting. Between January 1st and December 31st, 2012 (my last year there), most of my time was spent at a dining room table drawing this project.

This will be the third book I’ve designed and published, and all the money from this campaign will go towards printing the book and the incentive material. I want to make a book that you will enjoy looking at again and again; whether you are a true “ink devotee (like me),” a book or art collector, or simply someone who would like to gather some cool rewards for family and friends!

Below are the incentive descriptions that I’m offering as a way of saying “thank you for making this project come to life!”

Ink: Images and Essays from Bob Giadrosich. This 1st edition, 2006 release covers my years breaking into illustration, then recalls my freelancing as a gaming and fantasy artist; from my beginnings in 1987 with TSR, to working for GDW, FASA, R.Talsorian, Paradigm Concepts, Target Games, and White Wolf, (plus dozens more), to publishing my own limited-edition prints through Sharayah Press. 130 pages, 210 black and white illustrations, with a Foreword by Larry Elmore and an Introduction by Christopher Appel, this book brings together over 15 years of work and explains why I love ink!! These 25 are all that remain of the 1st edition soft-cover. And, I will sign the book for you!

Add-On Bonus #1: The Customized Sketch!

With less than two weeks to go, we've added the Customized Sketch. Now, every backer from the $25 level on up will receive an original 8x10 customized ink sketch with their One Year After package. This sketch will be rendered on acid-free Bristol illustration board, suitable for framing or putting away in an archival file! A survey will be sent after the projects' close to find out what subject you would like drawn. All we ask is that you keep it PG (or under) rated, okay? Make sure you pledge today, and get your original, customized 8x10 ink sketch of your favorite subject or person! And thanks once again for supporting this project!

Add-On Bonus #2: For Our International Backers!

Yes, whether it's shipping right across the border or around the world, postage rates are expensive! Crazy expensive. However, not much can be done but to "sweeten the pot," as it were. To help off-set the cost for our international backers, all those who back (or have already backed) this project from outside of the United States will receive the following limited-edition print, called Undomiel II. This print is signed and numbered, and retails for $20. So, if you're in Canada or Croatia, Sweden or the Solomon Islands (or any point in-between), this one's for you!

Add-On #3: Blast from the Past

It's amazing what you find digging around a bit! Most of my earthly belongings are still in boxes after being overseas for three years, however, as I was unpacking some things last week, I came across the limited-edition, signed and numbered print box. Within, I found some copies of a print that I thought was long sold out, called The Storyteller. It was first published as an illustration in 1998, in the Player's Manual published by Imagine Role-Playing. Later that year, it was released as a print. If you would like a copy of it, just go in and adjust your pledge by $20, and it's yours! I'll include it when your pledge level package mails out! You'll have a chance to fill in the option when the survey goes out. Here's what it looks like:

The Storyteller

Stretch goal #1: $10,000:

If the project hits this amount, 26 more pages will added to the book, featuring pencil images of 26 selected sketches. Each one will be displayed on the facing page of the fully inked image for comparison. You think the inking is tight, wait 'till you see the pencils! This will bring the book to 216 pages!

Stretch Goal #2: $17,000:

If we surpass this amount, everyone from the $25 level up will receive this girl on a black T-shirt:

Li Bing
Li Bing

She'll be in white, on the front, with the words “One Year After” on the back of the shirt AND I will take 4 of the most popular images from the book, re-draw them as finished color images, and add them to the back of the book, bringing the page count to 220 pages!

Thank you so much for looking! Pledge today, and please help to spread the word of this sketchbook project by phone, social media, and of course, face to face! If you do, you'll be rockin' in your stockin's! C'ya.

Risks and challenges

Of course, there are always unforeseen events, however, I don't get out much, so that does have a tendency to limit many of them. I still have to pay bills and eat (Ramen rules!), which means I have to meet the deadlines of other illustration assignments and projects; however, the only thing that remains is the layout and printing of this book and reward material. I will keep everyone updated from now until delivery, with plenty of communication along the way.
When the book arrives to you in August, I want it to be something you were proud to help create!

Shipping:
All pledge amounts include USPS Media Mail shipping within the U.S. Shipping for international orders will receive an additional fee. International orders ship by USPS Priority Mail. Taxes and fees vary by country. Please be aware international orders may be required to pay a duty tax by your local postal station.
