4 unique roles for 1-4 players. Scour the galaxy for exotic ingredients. Avoid pirates, wormholes, and dancing that gets out of hand.
About this project
IMPORTANT UPDATE: We've added iOS & Android tablets as release platforms, but due to logistical limitations our reward copies of the game are for PC/Mac/Linux only.
Space Food Truck is a tongue-in-cheek, cooperative, digital board game for PC, Mac, Linux, plus iOS and Android tablets. There are no card packs to buy, everything is yours out of the box, and it's not a free to play game. Full games can take 1-2 hours, if you live that long.
Alpha Gameplay Footage
The following footage is from a work-in-progress, alpha version of the game, but we hope it gives you some idea of how awesome the final game will be. Most of our art, animation, and overall polish are added later in production (and we are on Kickstarter for a reason).
Gameplay
Work together! Explore a procedurally-generated galaxy of 100 planets in search of ingredients, then scramble to the planet craving your dish to complete each objective. Finish every recipe before your ship falls apart to win.
You start by picking one of four unique jobs on the food truck: Captain, Chef, Scientist, or Engineer. If you have less than 4 players, you'll get to control more of the crew (or all of it if you choose to play alone).
Each character gets their own small deck of cards and a unique job to do. Everyone will have to pull their weight if you want to win! Each turn you'll add new items, ingredients, and special abilities to your character's card deck. Choosing new cards wisely is critical to crafting recipes and surviving the escalating hazards of deep space.
We'll have 3 difficulties to choose from: Rare, Medium, and Well-Done.
The Ship & Crew
This beautiful hunk of junk is the Galaxy Gourmet food truck. You can visit each other's quarters to pass along valuable cards or resolve time-sensitive emergencies. A few mission-critical items have a tendency to break down at the worst possible moments, like doors or life support, but think of all the money you saved buying used.
As the Captain: Chart your team's path across the galaxy, dodging danger and searching for exotic ingredients. Her special cards help narrow down the location of the rarest ingredient and jump around the galaxy.
As the Chef: Coordinate with the rest of the crew to collect ingredients and cook each recipe. He's the only one licensed to make food.
As the Scientist: Research and unlock more powerful abilities for your team. You'll decide which characters need your help most, and might find some powerful artificial ingredients while you're at it.
The Engineer: Try to keep your cool as the ship falls apart around you! It's up to you to prioritize repairs and keep the food truck chugging along.
The Galaxy
We’ve been slowly pouring all of the “world-building” content in, and it’s kind of magical to see our galaxy start coming to life.
When you launch a game, our system procedurally generates a galaxy of 100 planets, hides all of the traps and ingredients among them, then determines what each planet looks like. Scramboron may be a tiny ringed gas planet one game, or a huge cybernetic planet the next!
It’s been even more fun generating volumes of flavor text to attach to each planet. As you rollover planets on your map, the Captain has attached notes that make everything feel more alive. We plan on adding as many of these as we can think of, so you guys can have fun poking around the galaxy just to see what’s there. You’ll find stuff like:
- Hyrune: My homeworld of born leaders. Captain is actually the lowest rank we have.
- Uma Flux: Population: 5. Wait, now it’s six. Five again.
- Arachnia: A sylk rich planet mostly overrun by giant spiders. We’re arming the resistance with full bellies.
- P’lanett: I don’t recall anything interesting about this planet.
- Gena Hex: Their population dwindled to one, so the last Hexling turned to cloning. He wasn’t their finest specimen, but I guess he is now.
Where We Stand
The game design is complete with a fully-functioning digital prototype. We're currently in the process of implementing the artwork and effects, balancing the cards, and optimizing the user interface. Our target release window is around the end of 2015 for PC/Mac/Linux. After that, we'll jump right into optimizing it for iOS and Android tablets.
Who We Are
One Man Left is a two man team that's been making games since 2009, funded 100% independently by our own game sales. We cut our teeth on the Tilt to Live series and Outwitters (you can peruse our entire game library here), but Space Food Truck is an effort to branch out to a new platform and make something deeper. We're excited about making the jump to PC/Mac/Linux, and all the game design possibilities that opens up for us.
Why Kickstarter?
A few months into production on Space Food Truck, we realized that we'd have to make some MAJOR cuts to the scope of this game in order to finish it within our means. Cuts like no online multiplayer, no custom music or sound effects, and a lot of shortcuts on art and animation. Then we came to the realization: this is exactly why people go to Kickstarter.
With your support, we can make Space Food Truck the right way. The way we dreamed it when we started this thing. We aren't asking for the entire budget for this game, just what we're lacking to make it truly awesome!
Reward Examples
This is the kind of artwork you can expect from our $175 and $300 tiers. You'll receive a one-of-a-kind piece of you, a loved one, or even a pet. Choose between a space pirate, captain, chef, scientist, or engineer in our game's style. You could even submit an alien of your own design!
Whenever players complete a recipe, a special "Recipe Complete!" card pops up with a crowd of really, really enthusiastic customers. Our $1k reward tier puts you or a loved one front and center, every time any of our players completes one of the earlier, easier recipes. That's really often, and it'll even display your name when you rollover your likeness.
Our $2k reward tier is even cooler. We'll work with that backer to develop a planet that appears in our galaxy EVERY TIME anyone plays. How it looks and what it's called will be procedurally done (so no one can see your planet arrival card coming), but we will work with you on creating a custom scenario with custom artwork and a hidden message when players rollover your card. You could damage their ship, drain the shields, eat the recipe they're working on... Anything you can think of that doesn't break the game!
Feel free to shoot us any questions that might still be lingering. We're happy to add some FAQs or more info to this page.
Risks and challenges
Space Food Truck will be our fifth game, it has our full time attention, and we're confident that our funding goals will cover what we've promised. We're also working with production code as we speak, so the project is well underway and going smoothly.
We're still pretty far from the release date and have not yet begun implementing the multiplayer features, so there's always a possibility that the game might take longer than anticipated. We always try to pad out our release target to give ourselves room for error, and we've done that here. But people get sick, carpal tunnels get syndromed, life happens. Those kinds of problems are magnified when your team consists of two people.
If we're fortunate enough to meet our stretch goals, those would also push our finished release back a few months. Although our beta users will still be able to enjoy our work in progress.
