About this project
With over 1 BILLION bikes built for land on a planet that is more than two-thirds water, the Schiller S1 defines a new frontier in water sports and biking.
Leave the paddle at home. Forget all about bike helmets, cars, potholes and narrow bike lanes. No matter your athletic ability or age - everyone can have an exhilarating, low impact bike ride on the water for fun, fitness, touring and adventure! The ride doesn't end at the water's edge...
Merging modern design, technology, and engineering, the S1 is a high quality, water bike that delivers all the virtues of cycling in an aquatic environment.
Easy to Ride
Unlike so many other water sports that require lessons or weeks of practice (sometimes months and years), if you can ride a bike - or even if you can't - going for a spin on the S1 is super easy even on your first time out. And you'll never need to worry about falling off and hitting something hard.
How It Works
The S1 is a premium bike...and an ultra-portable boat. Like every bike on planet earth, it has a saddle, handlebars, cranks and pedals - all of which are standard bike components and easy to customize. Only this bike has no rubber and needs no road. With a proprietary drive train featuring Gates Carbon Drive Belts you simply pedal in order to spin the propeller and create forward movement.
Integrated handlebar steering enables the rider to easily turn the rudder to navigate towards the desired direction. Want to slow down or come to a stop? Just stop pedaling. Missed the party boat and want to turn around and make new friends? Reverse pedaling takes you back to the fun.
Safe and stable
Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our riders. The S1 has a wide catamaran configuration to provide for maximum stability even in rough conditions. Rugged, inflatable pontoons provide for close to 1000 lbs. of buoyancy.
Who wants to burn precious time hassling with running lines, gear and heavy hulls that take two people just to get on the water? We designed the S1 to go from land to water in under 10 minutes.
Easy Transport and Storage
What kind of water craft can you take IN your car, store in a city apartment or take on an airplane? The S1's compact frame and modular design allows you to do all three.
The S1 is manufactured for both fresh and salt water environments. We use hard anodized marine alloys and stainless steel components throughout. Our proprietary drive train featuring Gates Carbon Drive Belts is easy to tune and familiar to bicycle mechanics around the world. With simple fresh water rinsing after salt water exposure and periodic tuning, you'll have many years of epic adventures on your S1!

About Schiller Bikes
Risks and challenges
The team has worked extremely hard to prepare for this campaign on Kickstarter and planned extensively for manufacturing and fulfillment of our first scale run of the S1. Having already delivered our first product to market - the X1 Founder's Edition - we are keenly aware of the fact that some risks and challenges might come our way when we start our first large-scale production of the S1 and we want to be transparent about that. Here are the risks that we see going forward.
MANUFACTURING: While we have selected a very trusted and experienced, California-based, manufacturing partner, we still need to have an extrusion die built for the bike frame and create the tooling for some of the component parts. These generally require 2 months of lead time but in some cases delays may occur.
MODIFICATIONS: While we have spent well over a year building and testing multiple prototypes, as well as launching our first model (the X1 Founder's Edition) earlier this year, there may be some minor modifications that need to be made as we move into full scale manufacturing.
SOURCING: While we make the S1 in California, we do source the pontoons from China. We have worked with a very trusted partner for over a year, but we are aware that sometimes even the best partners miss deadlines and/or fail to deliver. For that reason, we have back up vendors and firm pricing should we need to explore alternatives in order to deliver S1 bikes on time.
We promise to update our supporters with any developments and have open lines of communication at all times.
Any pledge amount brings us one step closer to our goal. Help us pioneer a new frontier in water biking by clicking the ‘Back This Project’ button at the top of the page, or by helping us spread the word by sharing our page.
