Novi in the News
* Note that we were previously known as Genius Security
CNET: "While there are several DIY security systems that offer great features and incredible design, the Novi presents an intriguing, pared-down alternative...it might just end up being one of the smartest."
CrowdCrux: One of "7 Kickstarter Technology Products to Buy in 2014"
Paste Magazine: "You can check exactly what’s going on, no matter where you are."
Crowdsourcing: "The Novi Security Kickstarter campaign has been wildly successful; reaching the one month goal of $80,000 in the first six days."
TinyLightBulbs: "So if you had the option between [traditional security] and a straightforward security system that's easy to install, without fees or contracts, which would you choose?"
Stretch Goal: Backup Battery, 3G Capabilities, & Smartwatch Integration
You spoke, and we listened. As a result, we are happy to announce three additional features that will be integrated as we reach $150,000.
Backup Battery - The first is a backup battery in the base station that will keep Novi up even when your power goes down. The backup battery will keep your base station up and running for at least two hours, and will recharge once electricity is restored.
3G Capabilities - Paired with the backup battery is 3G capabilities that will ensure that your system stays up even when your Internet goes down. So should your Internet ever stop working, Novi will automatically switch over to the nearest cell tower keeping your home continuously protected regardless of what life throws at you.
To provide this feature, we will build into the base station a USB port to allow for the integration of a cellular dongle. By purchasing a data plan through Novi, individuals will be provided both a cellular dongle as well as data each month to ensure that their systems are always working despite what happens to their Internet.
Smartwatch Integration - We recently visited the Bay Area and sat down with Pebble's business development (the highest funded Kickstarter campaign ever) in their Palo Alto office. We are excited to announce that we will be the first DIY security system to integrate with smartwatches. Directly from your smartwatch, you can arm and disarm your system as well as receive all Novi notifications without your phones ever leaving your pockets or purses. Our vision is to integrate with all smartwatches, beginning with those wanted by our backers.
Security Made Simple - No Contracts, No Monthly Fees
Novi means new in Latin. Novi's mission is to make a new kind of security and connect families with their homes. We are building a no-contract security system that allows homeowners and renters to be connected with their homes through their mobile devices.
Novi Security is redefining traditional security: no contracts, no monthly fees, no hardwiring, and no false alarms. We believe that security should be simple. Novi can be setup in less than 10 minutes and usable by anyone with a smart phone. We want all families to feel peace and security.
1) Check on your home while you're away
2) Deter criminals
3) Receive notifications
Home isn't home until it's safe.
What Are the Problems with Traditional Security?
Traditional security is too complex. Binding contracts, expensive monthly fees, and annoying (sometimes expensive) false alarms to the police mean that too many people can't afford to keep their home safe. Consider some of these statistics.
- ADT reports that only 1/3 of customers with security systems actually turn them on.
- In the United States a home intrusion is committed every 13 seconds.
- Only 17% of homes in the United States have a security system.
- Of the break-ins that occur, 85% are from non-professionals that could be easily deterred by a simple alarm system.
- 94 - 98% majority of alarm calls to the police are false. That means reliability of traditional security alarms are between 2% and 6%.
- A $100 - $300 fee is charged to the home owner for a false alarm to the police.
What about Other Do-It-Yourself Systems?
There have been many successful do-it-yourself (DIY) security products that have launched recently. We love to see this! We want everyone to have access to a home security system that works for their needs.
We differentiate from other systems by being simple, discreet, portable, and more affordable.
Simplicity. Many of our competitors have what product developers call feature creep: they have built systems with more features than are necessary. Simplicity has guided all of our product decisions. This is why Novi Security uses pictures rather than video, batteries instead of a power outlet, and simple—yet effective— motion detection rather than an unnecessary array of environmental and noise sensors.
Discreet. Many renters and home owners have expressed a concern that they "don't want to feel watched" by their security system, and are turned off by camera lenses that are easily visible. That's why we built Novi Security to be as discreet as a smoke detector.
Portable. Not only can the sensors work for rental homes (no hardwiring) but you have the flexibility to place the device anywhere on your ceiling. A main differentiation feature from most of our competition is that Novi Security is battery powered and so you are not constrained by proximity to a power outlet.
Affordability. Our system utilizes a central hub (the base station). Many of our competitor's products are single piece products. A single piece can have an expensive downside when you want total-home coverage. With each additional sensor costing only $89, you can secure a three-entry way home for $377, compared to other DIY systems that cost $600 for the same protection.
Furthermore, there are no monthly fees as the cost of maintaining the system is built into the purchase price.
How Does It Work?
Our patent-pending system is a ceiling-mounted device that detects motion. If detected, the system will takes a series of pictures and send them to the client's smart phone as a picture roll.
The setup process is seamless taking less than 10 minutes for your system to be up and running.
Novi consists of three parts: (1) The base station, (2) the sensor, and (3) the app.
The eyes of the operations. When motion is detected, the sensor snaps a series of pictures, and forwards the images instantly to the base station.
The sensor is battery powered and uses simple adhesive (included) or small screws (included) to attach to the ceiling. The batteries last over 6 months. The app monitors the battery life of the sensor devices and notifies you when they are running low. The sensor is designed to be as discreet as possible, so you can get back to your life forgetting it's even there.
The brains of the operations. The base station plugs directly into your router and syncs with the sensors all around your home. When the base station receives images from the sensors, it forwards them immediately to your phone.
The command center of the operations. Arm and disarm the system directly from your phone. All pictures will be received through the app, empowering you to decide whether or not to call the police. For Kickstarter we will support iOS 7 and 8 and Android.
Additionally, set up your own preferences for taking pictures and sensor's sirens. The app allows you to customize different alarm modes: home, away, and custom. For example, you can have the siren on when you are on vacation, but have it off when the baby sitter is over. See more details in the FAQs.
How Big Is the System?
The sensor and base station are smaller than the average smoke detector. Easily attach the sensor to your ceiling and plug the base station into your router.
What about Pets?
Many have asked us about how the sensor handles pets in the house. The motion sensor device uses advanced PIR technology that will not detect motion from an object of less than 60 lbs. You can read more about this technology here.
What Happens When I'm Traveling?
Others have wondered how the system will work when they are out of town or otherwise do not have access to their phone. We use a system we call escalating response. When the system can't reach you, it will begin alerting your pre-determined emergency contacts.
How Does the Camera Work at Night?
The camera is equipped with night vision, allowing the sensor to capture images in the dark for you to view.
Below are images taken with a low-light camera. This is a rough image taken in our prototyping stage, but gives the basic idea. Our finished product will have a night-vision camera that takes much higher fidelity pictures.
Does the Sensor Device Have a Siren?
Yes. The sensor is equipped with a siren. You decide whether the siren is on or off from the app. The motion detection technology is firmly focused on the possible breach point (a door, window, or combination of the two) and the alarm will sound based on your alarm preferences.
What Is the Range of the Sensor?
Many have asked about the range of the motion sensor and the camera. The camera is a 120 degree lens and is high definition. You will get a quality picture by placing the sensor close to the entry or clear on the other side of the room. The motion sensor is passive infrared and will detect anything within 30 feet.
What Is the Project Timeline?
Right Now. We have successfully created the functional version of the hardware and have written 90% of the code for the smart phone app. Below are some shots of the current version of our product.
**Note: App designs were not added to this prototype and this version of the sensor is substantially larger than our off-the-shelf product will be.
Going Forward. This is where we need your help. We have funding to complete the final engineering, including the beta version of the product. We need your help in funding the tooling and manufacturing. Below is our month-to-month timeline.
What Are the Benefits to You?
- Peace of mind while you're home or away
- Freedom of placement of your device
- Liberation from binding contracts and expensive monthly fees
Why Are We Doing This?
Our team is from Provo, UT. We love to ski, play softball, mountain bike, golf, surf, and rock out.
Here is a short video bio of our team.
We have education and professional experience in mechanical and software engineering, business, and statistics. We started this project because, as renters, we wanted security at a fraction of the cost of existing solutions. We hate monthly fees and binding contracts and want to liberate home owners and renters.
We believe in the equality of mankind and in protecting our basic human rights. We believe that security should be a right and not a luxury. Our team is devoted to creating a product that is simple and affordable for everyone, especially renters, and small-and middle-home owners.
We have conducted face-to-face interviews with hundreds of customers to find these core-consumer desires: people want peace of mind whether they're home or away. They want to prevent break ins. And they want to know their children and family are safe. We believe that our product will provide this for millions that either don't have access to security or can't afford what's currently on the market. Please join us as we bring simple security to the world!

Risks and challenges
We have been working on Novi Security for the last 18 months. We have interviewed over 350 customers to pinpoint the perfect-product features. We have developed prototypes, finished a functional prototype, and are now fine tuning to finish our consumer ready product for mass production.
Our team was recently accepted into BoomStartup, the largest mentor-driven investor group in Utah. We have experience in engineering and product design, and are led by our mentors in traversing the manufacturing process.
We face the same challenges of any hardware company in taking a working prototype to mass production. We have de-risked as much of the system as possible through prototypes, and we are confident that we will deliver the product according to the timeline.
Throughout the campaign process and until delivery we will keep you updated on work and progress. If there are unexpected delays we will inform you immediately with 100% transparency.
There is always a risk of delay in delivering some of the rewards. We have given ourselves more time than estimated in order to reduce the risk of delay. We hope to deliver Novi even sooner than planned!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The product is expected to ship early 2015. We are actively finishing engineering and manufacturing and that's why we need your help!
Yes, but expect a delay if your home country has strange approval process for their frequency protocol. We've gone down the FCC way, but haven't looked into every single country yet.
Yes. If you don't have either an iOS or an Android operated phone, you won't be able to download the Novi app. You can't install, arm, or interact with the Novi system unless you have the Novi app.
Please see the product page for details on the specs.
We use an industry standard smoke detector.
When it detects smoke, it will send your Novi app a picture notification. The siren in the base station will also sound, alerting you that smoke has been detected. You can silence the smoke detector through your Novi app. Although this feature will help give you greater peace of mind, it is not meant to replace your already existing home's smoke-detector system.
You can purchase additional sensors when you pre-order Novi only if you have ordered the Guardian Package (base station + 4 sensors). If you need more than four sensors, then purchase the Guardian Package and add $75 per additional sensor you want.
You will receive a notification on your smartphone that your power has gone out. The system will not be able to send pictures after that time.
You can register more than one person to receive alerts. We have built a tiered response system so if you don't respond, you can set the alert to go to others in your personal network.
If your internet stops working, your Novi system won't be able to send you notifications in case of a break-in or intrusion. The Novi system will only be able to send notifications to your smartphone if the base station has a live connection with your internet.
You will want a sensor for each exit / entry area of your house. We built our product to cover a typical two bedroom apartment, so if you have larger than that you will want to purchase additional sensors. You can connect up to eight sensors to one base station.
You can only arm the system using the Novi smartphone app. If you don't have a smartphone, you cannot arm the system.
The device is incredibly light and ships with 3M mounting tape. This simple adhesive will allow you to attach the device to the ceiling.
Setup is very easy - plug in the base station, download the app, and follow a few minutes of instructions on the app.
Batteries allow you the freedom to place the product anywhere on your ceiling. Also, by using batteries, we eliminate the need for hardwiring the sensors. As we are currently undergoing development, we do not know what type of batteries the Novi sensors will use when it ships.
No, the base station does not currently use back-up batteries. If your power goes out, the Novi system will send you a notification telling you that your power has gone out.
Our engineers are optimizing Novi to have the longest battery life possible. The current estimates are that the sensor's battery life will be at least six months, but we hope to extend that through improved engineering (up to two years). We’ve designed the product so it’s as simple and safe as possible to take down and change the batteries.
We are working hard at getting into big box retail. Feel free to ask your local store to stock Novi and maybe we will get there sooner!
There is no monthly fee to use the Novi system.
We encrypt all communication using HTTPS. Pictures are encrypted before being sent through the internet.
With your smartphone app you can control your siren's preferences. You can either turn off the siren or have it set to soft, medium, or loud.
No. While we may take a look into this in the future, the sensors won't have that in this build. We are focusing on making our current build as amazing as possible for you - but we are definitely looking into this for a future version of our product. Depending on the state of our project, we may look into adding this feature as a stretch goal if we feel that it fits with our company's strategy.
House cats and other animals will not trip the alarm. The sensor uses passive infrared motion detection that measures the body mass of an object.
Novi offers a 1-year limited warranty, which means that if the device has any manufacture defect we will replace it if we receive the returned product within a period of 1 year from the date it is shipped. If the system is damaged by the customer, then we will not be able to replace the device or offer a refund.
The camera cannot be adjusted. Where you place the sensor on your ceiling will greatly affect the visibilty of the sensor's camera. However, it has a large coverage area that will cover most rooms if you place it in the right spot.
Version one of the product will support iOS and Android devices.
You will receive an alert on your app.
It's currently positioned at a 17 degree angle below the horizontal. We chose this because it is optimized for the viewing angle and a typical ceiling height of 8 feet.
As of right now, the Novi system is not weather-proof so would not be suitable for outdoor use.
The sensors can communicate with base station through walls up to 30m (approx. 90 feet) in distance, and up to 100m without wall interference.
No. Live video feed will drain the battery in the sensor a significant amount. One of the great things about Novi is that you can place the sensors wherever you want and not be subject to a nearby power supply, but streaming live video would make this feature obsolete.
We plan to develop our app for Windows in the future, but our current build will not be compatible with Windows.
Absolutely. The smoke detector will constantly be working even if your system is not armed.
