In September and October of 2011 I will be making my first ever voyage to Indonesia, at the invitation of YES NO WAVE MUSIC and curators involved with the Yogyakarta Museum of Contemporary Art. I will have several weeks’ residency in Yogyakarta where I will be teaching throat-singing workshops and creating murals while also rehearsing with local musicians to create an entirely new version of MALAIKAT DAN SINGA with an all-Indonesian band. In Jakarta we will have use of a recording studio where we will collaboratively compose and record new work. I have also been invited to prepare a book of whatever paintings are produced during my residency for publication in a limited edition artist monograph. The final weeks of my voyage will include a tour with the newly formed band, performing concerts in Jakarta, Malang, Bandung, Solo and Denpasar; some of these concerts will be documented by film maker Vincent Moon, famous for his work with A TAKE AWAY SHOW and LA BLOGOTEQUE/petits planetes.
I am seeking the support of friends, relatives, and fans of my music and artwork to help me cover travel expenses first and foremost. If I am able to raise funds beyond my initial goal of $2000, I would like to set aside some funds for the purchase of musical instruments from experimental musical instrument inventor and builder Wukir, based in Yogyakarta.
I intend to forge collaborative bonds with kindred spirits within Indonesia's experimental arts and performance scene through active engagement with other musicians, artists, and audiences. Through painting, creation of public murals, recording sessions and concerts, I also intend to create new work that transcends commonly defined boundaries of what constitutes low/high culture, East/West, spiritual/profane.
Saya ingin benar-benar baik dalam berbicara bahasa Indonesia, juga!
