I’m Eric Erdek and the things I love fight the things I hate.
I grew up half of the time in Guatemala where my Mother’s family is from and the other half in Brooklyn where my Father’s is from. Guatemala had a civil war going on and Brooklyn was like a war zone. Every block in Brooklyn was a different territory where the local kids saw outsiders as enemies.
I hate bullies, any time a stronger person picks a fight with a weaker one… be it dictators, corrupt police, military oppressors or a bunch of big kids picking on a solitary girl on the subway. I hate it.
I love comics. From early childhood, in both countries, comic books were and are a source of joy and fun and chills and sadness, but more than anything they are a place where the weak have champions. Flawed, confused, and wonderfully human champions. I love blues music, espresso coffee, noir detectives, empowered beautiful women, cafe racer motorcycles, spicy food, mystic warriors and hot cars.
I’m making a comic book where the things I love fight the things I hate! It's called THE ESPRESSO DETECTIVE COMIC. The Mexican P.I.
I’m a one man band, I write, draw, color and letter the comic.
In the past I dabbled in comics enough to keep a pro badge at Comic-Con with work like: The Subway Vigilante Comic, Heavy Metal Magazine Cover, Portrait of Ray Bradbury.
Fine Art from my past:
Now, after a life of fine art painting and working in U.S. embassies in dozens of countries and directing actors professionally for decades, I want to give back to the medium that I love best! I want to make comics!
THE ROAD TO NOIR
It was a hard learning curve to go from fine art painter to comics. In 2011 the comic art for Espresso Detective looked like this:
WENT FROM BAD ART
I’ve drawn and redrawn and fine tuned this comic. The Art NOW:
TO GREAT ART
The Espresso Detective Comic is planned as an ongoing series with monthly or bi-monthly issues. It will span many different aspects of the flawed champion, starting with the first story arc about human trafficking. As the series unfolds we will find out everything from why The Espresso Detective cannot love only one woman, why coffee gives him super powers and the definitive answers to the ultimate questions of the universe. (Really.)
WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SO FAR.
I’ve finished issue one and I'm about half way through issue two. I do all the work on my Mac: writing, art and lettering.
WHERE DID THE MONEY GO?
We’re trying to raise money in this campaign, it makes sense that you want to know where your pledge money is going. After fees and taxes, All the money goes to the creative team. (Uh... yeah, that's me.)
I’ve been putting my spare time into this project and pledge money will give me more time to keep working on it and keep the dream alive! (And then I can get the next issues out! Cliff-hanger!)
SOMEBODY HELP THAT POOR MAN!
This book needs an audience! Read the comic and help me spread the word! I love comics! You love comics? We should hang out!
CAN YOU DIG IT!?
I hope you love the art, I hope you get excitement, laughs and chills from the story! I hope you just can’t freaking wait to find out what happens next! It’s the very best I could possible make it and I hope you love it!
If you’re ready to jump in, then it’s time to pledge.
