A beautiful book full of maps and drawings about the history of Berlin.
I became fascinated with the history of Berlin and started making hand drawn maps and analyses of the city. Now I have over 60 drawings and want to put them together in a book with text in English and in German.
The book tells the story of the development, or the morphology, of Berlin. The hand drawn images in the book emphasize the impact of historical walls that were built in Berlin on the current day city. While the Berlin Wall has basically defined how popular culture understands Berlin, other walls continue to have an impact on how people live in and move through urban space.
Ring structures are a defining aspect of the city, and they have evolved out of the medieval city wall, the fortification, the tax wall and even the S-Bahn ring circling the inner city. The book focuses on analyzing and telling the story of these walls and what they have to do with the streets and built structures of today.Drawings about the defense systems of WWII as well as the Berlin Wall are then compared and contrasted with aspects of the previous walls.
The book has about 140 pages will be printed as a paperback with perfect binding. Here are a few example spreads:
Why use Crowdsourcing?
I wanted an easy way to connect with people all over the world. I want to share my passions and I want to see other people that are passionate about what they do, too! If you have any inclination to get in touch with me - I'd love to hear your story and your comments. I hope to reconnect with many people I've met by sharing this project on Kickstarter.
If I reach my funding goal, this will give me the chance to print and share with those who have supported me and to sell the book in Berlin. It would be great if I was supported beyond the funding goal! Then I would be able to bring in a publisher and a distributor for my book, so that the book could be sold in bookstores all over the world. Additionally, I would love to do a book launch in Berlin and New York, and even other cities. If you know of a bookstore that would like to sell my book, let me know!
During the day, I work as an architect. Berlin: A Morphology of Walls is a personal project that I have been working on in any and all of my free time. I am from South Carolina, but since living in London when I was 16, fell in love with big cities. I went to school in New York City, did personal research in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now in Berlin, Germany. I see this personal project as a great way to learn about and feel part of the world around me and I want to share that with others.
So far, I've been lucky to participate in a few projects that have helped me develop my ideas about Berlin. I have even been interviewed about the work on Deutsche Welle: Navigating Berlin's Concentric Circles.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Current state of the project: the artwork as well as texts in English and German are complete, and the book is laid out. I am working on the cover image and have asked friends to copyedit the texts and give me feedback to make the book as professional as possible.
Printing: I'm in the process of deciding on a printer. I have found several, and will be getting definitive price quotes for the book in the near future.
Shipping: I will be shipping the rewards from Berlin myself. I've looked into the shipping prices, and this should not cause any problems.
What is the size, media, and type of paper, of the drawing for the 300 dollar pledge? and does it have to be Berlin?
The drawing will be in pen or pencil on heavy vellum (about DIN A4), mounted on museum board. It can be a city of your choosing. Further details, e.g. specific location, can be discussed!
Anyone that makes the $25, $100, or $300 pledge will have the chance to also get the digital download. I will ask about this in the backer survey.
