What is Marbles?
Marbles is a new indie print magazine exploring, dissecting and exploding the stigma of mental health.
We’re looking at the people behind the diagnoses and giving them a chance to dig into their own stories and lay them bare in their own words. One in three people will experience a mental health problem each year and we want to hear their stories, promote their voices, and celebrate their existence.
Marbles will be published twice a year and will feature personal essays, think pieces, reportage, slow journalism and op eds about all things mental health. Think writers' own stories, interviews with fascinating people living with mental ill health; profiles on people working to help those who need it, and a flat out celebration of the fact that we are flawed, we are fearless, and we are doing fine.
Who are our contributors?
For the first issue of Marbles, we are so lucky and privileged to be able to bring you work from a whole host of amazing writers.
Marbles #1 will feature:
Leo Condie: Aye, we've only gone and bagged the frontman of Scotland's very best disco punks WHITE. We're getting a peek at the story behind the fringe and foppery as Leo tells his utterly unique mental health journey in his own words.
Heather McDaid: It's a sheer pleasure to be featuring work from publishing wunderkind Heather McDaid. Co-founder of 404 Ink and co-editor of Nasty Women, this one's genuinely superlative. We could go on, but we haven't actually got all day.
Emily Reynolds: A massive name in mental health writing, we're well chuffed to have Emily on board. Having just published her first book, A Beginner's Guide to Losing Your Mind, she'll be writing, appropriately, about what it's like to write about mental health.
Laura Waddell: Reader, writer, reviewer, creator of Lunchtime Poetry, Queen of Scottish publishing. Laura's got more strings to her bow than we could ever dream of and the fact that she has agreed to grace our pages makes us very happy indeed.
And an interview with Michelle Maren, mental health recovery advocate, motivational speaker, ex-porn star and filmmaker.
That's just for starters. We'll have loads more featured in the magazine - keep your eyes on our Twitter for more contributor announcements.
How will we use the money?
We will use the money to get your stories out there. We love the indie mag scene and we can't wait to be a part of it. As well as the names we have above, we're looking forward to featuring the best and brightest writers around and having them share their stories with us.
We pay our contributors: It is incredibly important to us that our contributors are paid for the hard work they do. Your pre-orders go a long way towards making this happen.
Printing etc: Pre-ordering a copy of Marbles means you'll be helping us with printing costs, as well as figuring out the quantities we need to get your stories out there.
Other costs: This goes towards everything else: paying designers and other creators, distribution, and the other unexpected costs that arise when you embark on a venture like Marbles.
Pre-order Marbles and help smash the stigma surrounding mental health.
Risks and challenges
Creating a magazine is pretty expensive. Printing costs and contributor fees stack up and that's not to mention the cost of designers, distribution, and the numerous other expenses that have appeared as the project goes on.
The indie mag industry is thriving and we're so excited by that. We're also aware that there is a genuine need for a magazine that faces mental health head on, doesn't tiptoe around any issues, and tells people's stories the way they want them to be told.
So we're dedicated to getting this project to you. If this Kickstarter doesn't meet its target, we will have to put printing hard copies on the backburner, as the priority will go to paying our contributors. If this is the case, our focus will turn to an online version instead.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
