WishTaker: A system neutral RPG adventure for 2nd-4th level
05/17/15 Funded! And First Stretch Goal Achieved!!
4 hours left, and we're going full-color/full bleed maps for WishTaker-Absolutely ecstatic! That makes two Thank You drawings for Liber Elixirium after the project ends. Have I mentioned how amazingly fantastic all of you are? No? You are the best! It seems too much to hope for, but there are still a few hours left, and I really, really want to give you guys the Wizard's Tomb. This will add another 10-12 page dungeon in pdf format for all Backers pledging $10 or more. If you know anyone still thinking about Backing, it's now or never--let's see if we can make this happen.
Again, you all are absolutely amazing!
Over 50% funded with 12 days to go! Two NPCs left for Backers wishing to immortalize a name in the module, and random Backer drawings for Liber Elixirium--check out the Updates for more information!
"Well, it appears you've worn out your welcome…again. What was supposed to be a week of rest and recuperation in this small border town has been abruptly cut short after last night’s ‘incident’ in the local tavern. The evening started off innocently enough—a hot bowl of wild boar stew followed by a few tankards of the local ale. That’s when a wandering Minstrel made an appearance. A round of drinks was bought, songs were sung, another round of drinks were called for…and that’s where things get, shall we say, fuzzy..."
So begins the tale of WishTaker, a system-neutral adventure for 4 to 6 players of 2nd through 4th level. A mixture of overland and underground exploration, WishTaker introduces a new creature and a unique entity, both of which are more fully described in the free preview link below:
For those not familiar with my earlier modules, I've included previews of them as well. Here they are:
What You Can Expect:
This is a completed module, 24 pages in length including an overland map, four encounter maps, and a cavern crawl. Written in a system-neutral style, WishTaker can be used with any Fantasy RPG system. Individual encounter locations and NPCs are fully described while the overall setting is left purposely vague, allowing the GM to integrate the adventure into their individual campaign setting with minimal effort. In order to maintain the greatest flexibility for individual use, creature statistics for various RPG systems will be available after the project has funded as a free pdf download from Second Thought Games. This allows GMs to print system specific stat blocks for creature encounters separately from the module for ease of reference.
The writing is completed, but professional cartography and illustrations are needed to make WishTaker shine. To this end, I've enlisted the talented Andres Canals and Clarence I. Hall to supply art and illustration, while Tom Fayen has agreed to lend his talents for the cartography. This expense, in addition to the outlay for a physical printing of the module in the Old School style (detached cover with interior cover maps) adds up. By presenting this project on Kickstarter, you--the potential Backer--determine whether the ideas presented in WishTaker are worthy to become reality or not. A preview of the module is included above to familiarize you with my writing style, and hopefully excite further interest in the final product.

Pledge Levels: What's the Difference Between the 'Old School' WishTaker and the Drive-Thru RPG WishTaker?
Once the cartography and illustrations have been secured, I will be doing a physical print run of WishTaker through a local printer, as well as a modified version for fulfillment through Drive-Thru RPG.
The print run will consist of a full color detached cover with two maps printed on the cover's interior (Overland Map and Cavern), while the module interior will be saddle stitched, containing b&w illustrations, text, and encounter maps.
This style of detached cover module hearkens back to the AD&D modules of old, allowing the GM to use the module cover as an impromptu GM Screen. This also allows the GM to refer to material in the module related to the cover maps without constantly flipping back and forth between the map image and the map descriptions.
With any of the Old School pledge levels, you will receive the detached cover version of WishTaker, printed locally (to me) in St. Louis. I'll pick it up from the printers, sign it, pack it, and mail it to you myself. Shipping to Backers in the U.S. is free. International Backers for Old School pledge levels will be charged shipping at the time of delivery.
Because Drive-Thru RPG is not able to print on both sides of the cover, the maps originally designated for printing on the cover's interior will be included in the body of the manuscript, while the cover itself will be attached to the manuscript rather than left loose. With any of the Drive Thru pledge levels, you will receive a coupon code entitling you to a print copy of WishTaker from DTRPG at their production cost plus shipping. As DTRPG operates on multiple continents, WishTaker is EU Friendly for these Pledge Levels.
WishTaker includes four full page encounter maps for use during the adventure. The initial funding goal allows for a black & white printing, requiring encounter maps be in gray scale. For an additional fee, (there's always an additional fee with printers, isn't there?) the interior could be printed in full color/full bleed. This would give us full color, full page (no blank margins) maps! Additionally, a border could be added to the text pages, increasing the overall visual appeal of the module. As this upgrade adds no additional time to fulfillment, it makes for the perfect stretch goal.
A number of adventure hooks present themselves in this module, some of which I have material pre-prepared for my own use. These are no-frills (i.e. no illustrations) dungeon crawls--a map with full player/GM descriptions attached.
Wizard's Tomb is my personal follow-up adventure as the players track down the origin of the magic item discovered on the Shaman encountered in WishTaker.
Caves of the Crabmen is a straightforward Bug Hunt for players, taking place at any time after WishTaker.
If backing for WishTaker proves exceedingly popular, I'll convert this material to pdf format and include them free with all pledge levels of $10 or more at certain benchmarks. These additional side adventures are exclusive to Kickstarter, and won't be offered anywhere else but with this project.
$2500 Funded! WishTaker grants our wish! (Liber Elixirium draw)
$3000 Upgrade to Full-Color interior maps! (Liber Elixirium draw)
$3500 Wizard's Tomb Added! (Liber Elixirium draw)
$4000 Caves of the Crabmen Added! (Liber Elixirium draw)
This will be my third module on Kickstarter. Ryubix Manor funded and fulfilled without a hitch, while City of the Lich is in the mail to Backers this very moment. As a special offer with this Kickstarter, I have added pledge levels for those interested in procuring all three modules at the same time. For U.S. Backers the shipping for physical copies at this level is free.
Hope to see you on the road to Broadmoor!
Risks and challenges
This is my fourth Kickstarter project (including The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils under Second Thought Games), and if I've learned anything, it is that printing and fulfillment times are the most difficult goals to predict. Each project, though, has been a learning experience. My stated fulfillment date for WishTaker includes a comfortable margin for (seemingly) inevitable delays, making early project delivery a more likely outcome. As with my other projects, successful completion is never a risk, only the possibility of unforeseen delay.
Communication and transparency are the most important aspects of any Kickstarter, and with that in mind, every effort is made to walk that fine line between keeping you fully informed as opposed to inundated with Updates.
