About

With data collection becoming the norm and privacy rapidly diminishing the need for private, decentralized secure communication is increasing. PepperSpray is intended to provide the tools required for such communication.

The intent of PepperSpray is to create an open source generic media and file streamer framework and player with encryption and secure communications built in.  The engine for this project is now in a state suitable for such an application.  Some highlights:

  • SSL communication built in via Netty
  • With acknowledgements on KitchenSync-core can at cruising speed stream 160 Gb / hour, over 200 Gb / hour with the pedal down.  For comparison 4k high def tv is a little less than 14 Gb / hour

PepperSpray-core will be initially a desktop application and framework for Mac, Windows and Linux.  Depending on funding the application/framework may be ported to Android.

PepperSpray (the application) will stream video and audio to a remote computer, enabling video calls.  Communication is performed using the UDP protocol, connections are performed over SSL and each stream is encrypted using a public/secret key pair negotiated on connection.  File streaming will also be implemented.

Summary of Deliverables:

1. PepperSpray-core - the core library can be used by any project to enable the same functionality while providing the ability to customize for individual requirements.

2. Documentation - the code will be fully documented.  Depending on funding a separate 'how to' manual will be created.

3. PepperSpray reference implementation - a simple GUI to exercise the functionality of the core.  Depending on funding the GUI will be enhanced appropriately.

4. Sample code
