I seek your pledges in helping to make this the first successful Stargate MMORPG that has ever been developed. The higher you pledge the better the rewards! Lots of very unique items that won't be obtainable inside the game.
Ancient Rings is a MMORPG inspired by the movie Stargate and is created by 26horses. This isn’t a game that is just a concept and it's also not one of those space MMO's where you log in and find your self bored where there is nothing to do in the game except for the 5 minutes you've spent running around looking at all the pretty things. It's a game that's been in development for 2 years. The mechanics are finished and now time is being spent building worlds, missions and adding other player content.
I seek funding to help improve what I already have done and to help keep my lights on. The goal is set at $5,000 to help keep my lights on and anything I get past that will help go to making improvements on things like animation, models and new features. I really have no idea how far this kick starter will go but if you look at everything I have done with limited money then just imagine what i can do after being fully funded. Don't just back Ancient Rings but back me as a developer that will work hard in making your future as frigid as my imagination.
Fill that fan boy or fan girl inside you with the adventure you always dreamed of by exploring, trading, meeting new races with all different levels of civilization and solving the problems that exist on each world that you set foot on. Every planet has its own story-line. Some planets follow the Galactic story-line and others are cut off from it. Lots of thought has been placed in making each world unique and filled with different types of difficulties. You will reach these planets by gate or when no gate exists by ship. There are no random generated player content in Ancient Rings. Every world is hand crafted to make your adventure as story oriented as possible.
Each world will have different mounts, vehicles or ships to help move around the planet faster. The worlds are quite big so these things that exist provides faster travel. There is still a ton of walking around in the game. Even if you have a puddle jumper you still have to walk back to where you parked your jumper at. So if you think about it even personal ships really doesn't help in every situation. Early access will consist of 3 planets to explore and the game release in May will have 6 or more. The plan is to release a few planets every few months. I'm trying for quality over quantity. Like discussed earlier solo game content are being more focused on above anything else.
You start off on a remote planet called Nekkar a Delta site for Earth with limited supplies. The base can no longer dial back to earth due to a recent large attack on Earth by an unknown enemy. You can choose between 4 different character classes: Captain, Traitor, Commander or Renegade.
Great care is being taken to keep player interaction high in the game. Players will have to meet in person to do final trades or hiring a player with a ship to take him to a world with no gate. There is no handy cap on quest locations for the mini map so players will have to ask other players where things are if they get lost. Things that I feel ruin other MMO's with to much handy caps and holding a players hand when out on their adventure. The game focuses more on solo content then group content. You can have 6 players in a group to run around with you and do quests. Actual group content as instances will exist more later on after more worlds are finished. There is no PVP in Ancient Rings as of right now. There will probably be something like battlegrounds added later when evil faction is added to the game but you won't see open world PVP on the main server. I feel open world PVP is just players running around and ganking each other and it will ruin the environment game play for the solo player. If I feel enough of the player base wants a open world PVP game I'll make a separate server for it in the future.
Unlike a lot of MMO's in Ancient Rings merchant items are actually really good items to buy with your galaxy credit and the best items in the game are made with trade skills. Trade skills are also used to upgrade your personal ships in the future as well. There are 4 skills you can master but only one skill per character. In order to make certain items you will be required to work with other players with other trade skills to complete an item.
The entire game is open world for players but not NPCs. So players that are not in your group will not affect your game world experience. Level 10 will be max level for early access and level 20 for first release by May 2019. Every time a player levels they will receive a point to spend in their abilities tree and every 5 levels you will receive either a weapon or new ability to use as well. Your ability tree also obtains new abilities as well. Abilities in your ability tree uses stamina and abilities and weapons that you get every 5 levels will use provisions. Provisions and stamina are your two consumable stats. The game uses no ray casts and no click targeting. So the entire game is all skill. It also has limited UI on NPC's. So no health bars to keep the game feeling scary and giving a sense of the unknowing and more of a real RPG feel.
Ancient Rings will receive updates just like any other MMO but it will also focus on enhancing its physics and graphics as the game engine Unity3D keeps enhancing. The game will be developed in two large stages. First stage is focusing on solo content and character leveling. The second stage will more on group content and ship content. Players will be able to upgrade their ships with trade skills, engage in battleground PVP battles and group PVE instances.
It won't stop with Ancient Rings. There are plans to build a battlefield type game related to this game as well as an RTS game.
What ever you can do or dream you can always begin it because boldness has genius, power and magic in it!
This is just a little silly dance video i showed off last year. I wasn't gonna add it but figure some may be new and never got the chance to see it. Not much time was spent on it. A lot of issues with it and no post processing added. I always get a kick out of watching it though.
The game will be available on PC, MAC and hopefully Linux later on. It will be playable on the 26horses Game Launcher and later on be available on Steam.
Risks and challenges
I created my first game System Lords 5 years ago and has been keeping me floating allowing me to work full time on Ancient Rings. Even though this is my 2nd game with the Unity3d game engine I'm still learning new stuff while I develop Ancient Rings. Unity3d is a growing engine, so I expect there to always be a learning to expect with every version release. I had a lot of issues with making certain things work together and was mainly due to being limited on funding. Some times I had to wait for certain things to be made, so I had to stop what I was working on and work on something else which a lot of times left me side track.
I first started this project I decided to first finish all the game mechanics before focusing on how the game looks. I fear this left an impression on a lot of people over the years of development as to how the game was going to look. Even how the graphics look now will improve more and move over time. I"m focusing more on mechanics and player content than graphics. This won't be one of those MMOs where you log into the game and have nothing to do in it. This also won't be simulator or sandbox game. This game will be an adventure high action game. I've been trying my best to keep those things true while I'm developing the game.
It has been pretty hard raising awareness for this project without using funds to run adverting campaigns. If you can please help spread the word it will help a ton. It has been the hardest thing for me to achieve. I post a lot on community pages but it doesn't help as much as most would think. If I get enough backers on this Kick Starter it will go a long way in making things easier while finishing the development of the game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
