About

UPDATE #2: I found out why there has not been a successful Christian card game. I have played Revelation and Timestream, and while both were good they simply lacked the long term support that the game needed. After working on the game a bit, and attempting some kind of resource management, it has come to my attention that this game as a TCG may not be as functional or as successful as it should be. Fantasy Flight has changed their production to an entirely LCG style, a living card game. While it plays right out of the box, the setting is different every time and hordes of expansions alter the game in new and exciting ways. This particular project may be better off as such a style, and this project may be scrapped within the next few days after a bit more playtesting. This does not mean the idea is dead, just this iteration of it.

UPDATE: I have gotten a few questions about rules, card art, etc. The cards are currently under development, with their interactions being at the forefront of the design process. It's getting more functional as we go along, the actual artistic design is still in process. By in process I mean: I am terrible at art and I am still looking for an artist. The rules as they currently stand will be posted eventually, after I attack the rulebook with the red pen of grammar smiting.

In addition, something interesting was discovered that will change the game a bit. It turns out the "Defenders of Faith" title is quite similar to the title "Defenders of the Faith" which is a player's guide for clerics and paladins in D&D 3.5. So we now have a "working title" and the actual title of the game will change. To potentially facilitate that change, a new reward level has been added!

After years of playing Pokemon and Magic, I always wondered why there was never a trading card game for the Christian community. There have been a few attempted games, but they lacked the long term support that keeps players coming back. I would love to be able to play a game that helps me grow in faith, and gives me the strategy and challenge that a trading card game should.

The general premise of the game is as follows:

Jesus Christ has promised us that he will be returning, and as a follower of Christ we know that this is true. But what about the people that don't know? Jesus gave us our great commission to go into all the corners of the world and share the gospel, and that is exactly what we will do.

Your character cards will be your friends, your family and your fellow church members, each with their own set of unique skills and encouragements. When a coal is separate from the fire, it grows cold. Keep great people around you and your faith will grow.

You will also have support, in the form of churches, bible studies, small groups and even education. These support cards will stay in play and give you greater opportunities to travel and spread out across the world. But the mission field starts right at home, will you witness to your neighbor or to a total stranger?

You may travel across the entire globe on mission trips. Some may be only for a single turn (think of it as a youth group trip to the Ukraine or Mexico) and some may take over the rest of the game (such as settling a family in another country, or becoming a pastor for a military branch overseas). Wherever you go, you will always have people to witness to.

The win condition. This proved difficult to hammer out during preliminary design stages. We are not considered more holy by bringing a higher number people into the church, so how do we create a TCG win condition that is qualifying, and not quantifying? We don't.
So how do we share Christ's word through our game when the rules clearly state that whoever witnesses to the most people wins the game? Sharing Christ's love is not a race, and cannot be kept track of via face down prizes or a life total.

So we create a new card type, the Mission card. Therefore go into all of the world, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Each player will have at least one Mission card within their deck, and when you have met your requirements listed on the mission card, you can reveal it to your opponent. The first player to finish their mission does not automatically win however, as the game is not a race. Instead, each Mission has an assigned point value based on its difficulty, and when one player runs out of cards in their deck, whoever has more Mission points wins that game.

Don't think for a moment that lower point values are easy and high point values are hard, remember the woman who gave two coins? Her gifts to the Father were greater than those of the rich men.

I hope you will enjoy the game, the success of this first edition of cards will determine the desire to release expansions. The organized play will be fun and rewarding, and hopefully it will teach everyone that games do have a place in the Kingdom of God.
