I used to sing in my younger days when I lived in Portland, Oregon but gave it up when I moved back to my home state of Minnesota due to the usual: marriage, kids, job, house. After my divorce and as I aged, I found a little more creative space in my head and began playing the guitar that sat in the corner of my living room and eventually began writing songs. In 2010 I began recording the 12 songs on my CD at Mike Danner's Studio in Portland, Oregon. I chose to record in Portland instead of Minnesota where I live because all my musical connections are there and it gave me a good excuse to visit more often.
I feel slightly sheepish about how long it has taken me to finish this project but when I look back on the process I'm glad I took my time. I wasn't sure how I wanted it to sound when we started recording but I knew the feelings I wanted to evoke. Mike Danner helped me achieve what I wanted by assembling the right musicians for each song and those musicians nailed it! The process of starting with nothing but bare songs I plunked out on my guitar and watching them become fully realized songs and finally a packaged CD is so damn fun.
I want to acknowledge two people who didn't make it into the video because I didn't have photos of them: Randy Givens who plays hand drum on Broken (he recorded more percussion but we got a little carried away and needed to scale it back) and Ray Pearson who I have actually never met, who came in and smoothed over some of my more difficult vocals on Drive Away with her beautiful back-up harmonies.
Up to this point I've been able to pay for all the expenses associated with making a record myself but now I need help for the final push. With the money I hope to raise here I'll be able to pay for mastering, duplication and printing. And then I'll have a record! I can't wait for you all to hear it.
