Who We Are
Circus Factory is a community of professional and aspiring circus artists who run Cork’s only dedicated circus training and creation space based in Cork City, Ireland. Circus Factory is run by its people for its people on a voluntary basis, and is a space that welcomes and aims to provide training and performance opportunities to anyone interested in circus.
Why are we running this kickstarter?
After 5 years in a building on a 3-month lease, we recently moved premises. The new space offers more aerial possibilities and the long-term lease allows better planning for the future.
We are running this campaign to help us bring the facilities of the new space up to a suitable and safe training level. Key areas that we need to invest in are heating, insulation and improvements to our aerial training facilities…now we have lots of extra height to play with!
What is so special about this new training space?
This is the first time in Circus Factory's history that we have had a significant lease on a building allowing us to plan for the future. For the last 5 years we were renting a premise on a rolling 3 month lease, always with a level of uncertainty as to whether we would get to stay or be overlooked in favour of the increasing demand for commercial property development.
And whilst this did eventually happen it gave us the opportunity to seek out a more secure and permanent residence. We have a 5 year development strategy in place and we are ready to build on our training and education developments and ambitions to date. These include:
- To benefit the community and advance circus arts in Cork:
- Provide a training space to members.
- Run a yearly program of masterclasses and workshops.
- Provide time and equipment for those who are not professionals, but who are interested in circus.
- Provide a space for creation and rehearsals of new material with residency possibilities for companies.
Circus Factory activities
Despite the ongoing uncertainty of our last residence it certainly didn't stop us from working, training and having a bit of fun over the years! We have hosted multiple workshops, masterclasses and youth programs with national and international circus performers gracing our doors. And not forgetting our very popular cabarets and family shows where we get to show off just a bit!
How we make a difference
As an organization staffed by volunteers, we value creative use of resources and opportunities. As a circus space, we put an emphasis on the performative aspect of our craft.
We participate in cultural events around the city to engage with the wider community, and foster a sense of support, sharing and belonging within our walls.
We do our very best to keep workshops affordable, encourage skill sharing and provide regular up-skilling opportunities for all levels and disciplines.
And thats our story…so far anyway!

Risks and challenges
Since our small beginnings in 2000 we have grown beyond our expectations as a community and as an organisation with last year seeing the highest number of participants in our workshops throughout the year. Moving into a new space however can offer challenges both to the individual and as an organisation as we must adjust to a different location, a different set up and work together to help make the unfamiliar become familiar once again.
The support so far however has been incredible and we have a very dedicated network of people who have volunteered their time and energy to scrub floors, paint walls, drill holes, climb ladders and generally get the space a ready as possible.
And this is and always has been one of Circus Factory's greatest advantages; the community spirit and eagerness of our members and supporters to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. Circus Factory has always been ran on a voluntary basis and relies greatly on the willingness of people to pitch in and help out. Lucklly we have a very strong community in Cork with support from members, the wider artistic community and local business.
Our board of directors represent many associated organisations and local authorities whom also have a strong interest in the future development and growth of Circus Factory in the long term.
Whilst the transition to a new space is daunting at times, we cannot contain our excitement at the future possibilities of Circus Factory Cork.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
