This is a story about a pageant with sashes, gowns and crowns… but no bathing suits.
This is a pageant for women over 60.
QUEENS follows three senior-aged women gearing up for the Miss Senior America – New York pageant. But it's not just about the pageant, it's about these amazing women.
WHY WE NEED YOU:
This documentary adventure started as a class assignment. It was supposed to be a quirky and light 20-minute piece. But, after months of reporting and shooting, our feature transformed into a touching and inspiring movie.
THERE’S SO MORE TO BE DONE:
We have more to film and edit. We also need to hire and pay a sound editor/mixer. We then hope to enter many independent film festivals with our final product, which all have entrance fees. Plus, Eléonore is from France and we would like to hire a translator and take the film to Europe!
In QUEENS, you’ll meet:
1. Vivien, 87: A woman who plays tennis throughout the week and just completed a memoir. Although she finds herself the oldest in the competition, her vibrancy (and humor) is unparalleled.
2. Tina, 65: Still moving on from her husband’s recent death, Tina realizes this competition is the first time in her life she’s spending time on herself. Being behind the scenes of others her whole life, she’s nervous about taking the spotlight herself.
3. CJ Marie, 60: Just eligible for the pageant, CJ’s one of the youngest but one of the most experienced. She’s been competing in pageants for the last 20 years, wanting to make it known that there’s beauty in every age group...and every reason to join a pageant.
These women represent the antithesis of ageism – they are active, beautiful, and strong. And while loneliness and the realities of getting older are alive in their minds, they are each finding ways to overcome these insecurities that so many women face.
With your help we could change the perception of older women in our society.
