About this project
Our kickstarter goal is to get the funding necessary to bring our American made hammock camping system to market. We are offering our hammock and suspension in order to raise money so that we can bring the “Full Bear Taco” Hammock System into production.
We’ve enjoyed creating and refining our hammock system and strongly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to have an amazing night's sleep in the outdoors. We’ve worked hard to create a system that is adaptable to your particular hanging needs because when you’re in the great outdoors, flexibility is the key to a great time.
Our hammock was developed in the mountains of North Carolina for camping but it is also great for just lounging in the back yard. Our hammocks are large with plenty of room to spread out and relax. The nylon is soft and comfortable to the touch. There are nine accessory loops that blend into the design when not in use, as well as an attached pouch. The loop system we added to the hammock allows for you to attach gear for quick use, keeping it off the ground. The strong loops provide infinite possibilities to anchor your hammock.
We made our hammocks of the highest quality materials we could find. We used the best diamond ripstop nylon, the strongest micro-core thread, and even 3/16" dia. super strong infinity loop to gather the ends. This hammock is strong and wide enough to hold 2 people easily with a whopping 800lb capacity. Once combined with our suspension system it allows you to lay in any position you like.
THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM
Tree Straps A great hang begins with a sound hold. These tree straps are designed to anchor your hammock safely and securely. For proper use please see www.beartaco.com. The tree strap is incredibly strong at 1” wide to distribute the weight on the tree without damage to the cambium layer (baby bark). Quick and easy hammock setup that allows for a large range of tree sizes. Two sewn loops allow for quick and easy attachment with carabiners or knots. The thread used is a high strength micro-core thread that is sewn in the strongest possible pattern for it’s use. These tree straps are a must for a quick and safe hammock setup. Each set consists of a 6’ and a 7’ Blaze Orange strap to give you more flexibility in the woods.
Whoopie Slings set - 2 End Whoopies and 1 Ridgeline Whoopie in Blaze Orange A great lay always starts with your suspension system. The Whoopie is an adjustable rope that makes it easy to choose the height of your hammock. It has a fixed loop on one end and an adjustable loop on the other. It is made with an incredibly strong 7/64” dia. synthetic rope that is as strong as a steel cable. The Tibetan silver style stop bead on the adjustable loop is lightweight metal, and is wear and break resistant. These whoopies are made to last and make hanging the hammock quick and easy. We’ve designed the Whoops to handle both very short and long hangs. From a minimum length of 18.25" to a maximum length of 69.5" these Whoops are made to meet the ever changing conditions you will face in the outdoors. Once set, these suspension Whoopies will hold strong with over 500lbs of staying power each. -The Ridge Line Whoopie adjusts the tension on your hammock so you can adjust the sag in the hammock. More sag allows you to lay at a slight diagonal in your hammock which gives you a flatter lay. Made of the same synthetic rope as our End Whoopies and are designed to provide you plenty of adjustment to make your hang the best it can be. The Ridgeline is adjustable from 85” to 127.5”
The Full Taco consists of a complete suspension system in blaze orange, a fully coordinating orange & blue set: hammock measuring 9’7”x6’6” with attached pouch with room for straps and whoopies; silnylon rainfly 10’3”x9’11” with 10’ tie-downs attached with cord management, cord locks and quick release hooks for easy on/off mounting and silnylon stuff sack; underquilt 6’4”x4’11” with snap-straps for added versatility and silnylon stuff sack; overquilt 7’4”x 3’4” with adjustable foot box for ease of converting from straight quilt to toasty enclosed envelope for your feet and silnylon stuff sack. The Full Taco including 4 carabiners weighs just under 7.5 lbs & is good to 40 degrees.
We look forward to bring to Kickstarter the rest of our Bear Taco hammock system, but until then we can only offer a few Primo tier level packages that show all of our creative and thoughtful designs. All of the Early Bird, Christmas, and Primo Taco tier products will be hand sewn by Michelle, one of the founders of the company. Subsequent products will be produced by Opportunity Threads, a cut and sew co-operative in Morganton, NC.
As lovers of hammock camping, it became clear to us that our old gear would never fulfill the idea that we loved. Down bags and sleeping pads would shift in the night, leaving cold shoulders and hips. Poor suspension and cheap nylon hammocks that stretched overnight made hanging the hammock frustrating and often left us on the ground. All that changed when we started making our own gear, to our own specifications. We would not compromise on the materials or on the design. Each outing gave us the opportunity to sit around the fire and discuss how we could make our gear better. Every morning would start with how the gear did and how we felt the changes we made previously had fared. Soon enough, we had the beginnings of the best hammock system bar none.
Our no compromise approach focused on using the right materials and techniques for the job. The need for a strong, lightweight suspension that wouldn't stretch when wet and under load led us to synthetic rope. Research into knot tying led us to centuries old rope splicing techniques that were perfect for making strong, adjustable holds. We found a lightweight diamond ripstop, that is silky soft to the touch, to make the best hammock. Looking at gear made for rock climbers we found the perfect stitch for our tree straps. Add to that the little details like our accessory loops, and you have a hammock system that is focused on ease of use as well as functionality, making sure your outdoor trip is the best it can be. Our focus isn’t to be the lightest or the cheapest, our focus is to be the most comfortable and secure (800 lb. capacity), providing you with the best outdoor experience possible.
As a bootstrap family startup, we are proud to be an American made product with as many American suppliers as we can find. We are committed to creating jobs in both our local community and country. This helps us feel confident that our product is being made with our environment in mind.

Risks and challenges
Our current product manufacturer is only equipped to handle around 10,000 hammock orders. If we go significantly over that amount, we will need to find a new manufacturer that can handle higher volume.
We are currently fundraising for the hammock setup, although we have plans in development for the entire system.
At $10,000 we will be able to purchase materials in bulk; finish beta testing on Underquilt, rain fly, overquilt, and bug net; work with the manufacturer to get a cost for the Underquilt, rain fly, overquilt, and bug net; and start selling our hammocks and accessories online.
We will then move into a second round of fundraising to reach our stretch goal of $50,000, which allows us to do another Kickstarter for the Underquilt and rain fly, and have all of our products in production by the end of 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
