For a long time I have wanted to record songs by songwriters that have had a profound influence on me. Songs by artists like Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits, whose recordings I have listened to since I was a child; songs that feel personal and speak to my own experiences. I am now ready to make that recording. I have the songs, wonderful and original arrangements, an amazing band…
All I need is the funding. And your help.
The New York Times critic Stephen Holden called me the “…the rare singer who can negotiate tricky folk pop lyrics…art songs…and popular standards with equal insight and authority…” Theater fans may know me as Cossette in the original Broadway cast of LES MISERABLES, or as Florence in the original Broadway cast of CHESS. You also may have heard me singing the title role in Walt Disney’s POCAHONTAS.
For my work on Broadway I have been nominated for three Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards, and I won an Obie Award for my performance in ELI'S COMIN' at the Vineyard Theatre. I have also performed on concert and cabaret stages all over the world including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The recording I want to make is deeply personal. The music will be drawn from my new solo concert, which debuted in New York last March, in London this past October, and will be performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in December.
Collectively the songs are a meditation on love and happiness and include some of my favorite songwriters such as JONI MITCHELL, LEONARD COHEN, STEPHEN SONDHEIM, and COLE PORTER, among many others.
The arrangements are a fresh take on the traditional jazz trio with music director Dan Lipton on piano, Damien Bassman playing African and South American percussion and Peter Sachon on acoustic and electric cello.
The show has received rave reviews from critics in New York and London:
"a deeply satisfying performance," (Stephen Holden, The New York Times); "an unqualified triumph," (Mark Shenton, The Stage [UK]); and
"genuinely sophisticated," (David Finkle,Theatremania).
$40,000 is actually the bare minimum to make a studio album like this.
- Studio Rental
- Producing Fees
- Musician Fees
- Mixing & Mastering
AND THAT’S NOT ALL. Every cent you pledge will go toward the making of this recording. If we can raise more than our goal, it will go toward marketing and promotion.
The recording industry has changed dramatically. The usual sources of financing, such as record labels, don’t exist in the same way anymore. Kickstarter offers the unique opportunity for friends, family and fans to be involved in this exciting creative process. In exchange for your pledge I am offering all sorts of rewards including the chance to visit us in the studio during a recording session, or tickets to a future show that includes a backstage meet and greet and much more. I hope you will consider becoming a backer, it would mean so much to me.
Risks and challenges
As I said above, it is hard to get financing for recording project these days. Then there is the time frame. We need the funds by mid December when we HAVE to go into the studio to record. In order to do that, we need to reach EVERYONE who might be interested in participating.
YOU CAN HELP! Tell your friends, post the link http://judykuhn.net/kickstarter on your facebook page, or tweet about it.
And again THANK YOU!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Though no date has been set, our goal is to release it in early May of 2013. We will let all our backers know as soon as we have a release date!
Yes. Your card will not be charged until December 9th and then ONLY if the project has been fully funded by that date.
