The Companion Piece is a fun, vaudeville-style play. You never know what kind of crazy prop the actors will use or wear! But you will be entertained.
Z Space wants to work with up-and-coming director Mark Jackson and his co-conspirator Beth Wilmurt on a new play, The Companion Piece. On a large empty stage, an aging vaudeville Headliner opens and closes the show with his long-since perfected act. In between, a vaudeville duo struggles to create their own perfect act. The piece was inspired by the book A General Theory of Love which takes a scientific approach to the need for human companionship. Can we go it alone in life? Is our individual survival dependent on other people? The piece will include various forms of dance, music, sketch comedy, and a ladder dance.
The Companion Piece is a "devised" work, which essentially means there is no script (yet). The play is created by the actors and designers themselves during rehearsals. This is a challenging way to create new work, yet the surprises and fresh ideas that emerge as a result are exhilarating. As you can imagine, this type of process takes time, like twice as much time as a regular play. This also means that it takes money. To pay the artists, to cover the rent, to buy props. Lots of props.
We've already started the workshop process, and some great things came out of it. Who knew our board chair (who happened to drop by and got inspired) could tap dance? We do hope to show you the finished product in January of next year, but that will depend on whether or not we can cover our costs to open. We're almost there, but we need your help!
Thanks for your support.
