What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Introducing the world’s first soft, safe helmet, that couples the safety we all need with comfort and looks we all love.

The A1 Helmet will exceed the American ATSM F2040 and European EN1077 standards for alpine helmets, so you stop worrying and start shredding!

Our proprietary system outperforms traditional helmet materials, such as EPS and EPP. What's the point if it's not safe?

Our mission from day one was to make a helmet that can exceed all standards. And it will.

In a recent test, our material in isolation at 28mm thick surpassed the requirements of the EN1077 flat anvil drop test by 12.9%.

We selected high-quality merino wool for the inner layer. It's like clouds for your head because your head deserves the best.

Our soft shell design promotes elasticity and conforms to your head perfectly. Fit and comfort go hand-in-hand. If a helmet doesn't fit, it's not going to be comfortable.

The helmet comes 3 in standard colors; Yellow (with pom pom), Red and Black.

The remaining two colors will be chosen by backer vote; from a sample of cool designs and colors sent to you in a backer survey.

If you have a cool design in mind, let us know! It might just make it to the backer survey (and production!).

We sweat the details on this helmet, so you don't have to.

  • Superb quality merino fabric underlayer provides superior breathability and insulation.
  • Certified stretch-fit helmet design (the first ever!), fits as you've never experienced.
  • Easily washable, just throw it in the machine with the rest of your clothes.
  • Earphone compatible, unlike many restrictive helmets (no special earbuds/pads needed).
  • Goggle compatible (but not gaper compatible--close that gap!).

We are in the process of combining the two essential elements of the helmet; the impact absorption technology and the structure that makes the flexibility of the helmet possible.

The EN1077 standard demands multiple tests are passed to be granted certification.

These include the:

  • Penetration test
  • Conditioning test
  • Retention test
  • Drop test

Below are preliminary material testing results according to the EN1077 flat anvil drop test. This is not full helmet testing data but shows the capability of the layering system.

A 28mm flat section of the material exceeded the EN1077 certification, flat anvil drop test by 12.9% when tested by an independent NATA certified professional.

We will achieve certification once a sample of production units can be independently tested. We will never release a helmet that doesn't meet the standard. We won't lie; there are some significant steps ahead of us in the next couple of months. However, the hard stuff is done in the base design and proprietary shock absorption material. The final elements we have left to finalize are below:

  • Final assembly process and finishes
  • Material fixation optimization
  • Full conditioning certification testing (including penetration testing)
  • Final wear/fit testing

While these are all important to the ultimate helmet design, we have the solutions to them all, to be implemented and tested soon.

We're using non-Newtonian materials that have shear-thickening properties.

This means they're generally soft and rubbery but stiffen on impact. If you're into action sports gear, you've probably seen this type of material in back protectors, elbow guards and shin guards for pedal sports and motorcycling.

How Polyanswer works to disperse force in typical applications
How Polyanswer works to disperse force in typical applications

By itself, the material doesn't have a suitable impact profile for absorbing complex impacts, such as those subjected to the head. They're perfect for armor and deflecting rocks and branches, but not good at absorbing cranial impacts.

We've patented a new way of using these materials; a unique layering system that allows us to make a helmet that's soft and super conforming, but also passes the international standards for snow sports.

While great for deflecting impacts, non-Newtonian materials turn hard on impact, but this doesn't work well enough for head impacts. We have introduced a unique layering system that circumnavigates this issue and uses the material to absorb complex impacts.

Helmets strive to slow down the impact, over an amount of time. The longer an impact is prolonged, the better off your head will be (like an airbag or foam pit). Our layers allow a tremendous amount of compression throughout the materials, improving the distance and time that your brain has to slow down.

Above, we've told you how our technology works, by intelligently layering non-Newtonian materials to absorb complex impacts. To get the most from these materials, we had to find the best supplier.

If you ever did the 'cornstarch and water' experiment at school, this will help visualize and explain how the molecules in the material function when force is applied.

We have a patent pending on our unique design so it won't be able to be copied and replicated, and can assure you that the product you're getting is the first of its kind.

To create a helmet that is as conforming as ours, we had to find the best material. We have teamed up with Polyanswer, one of the world's leading non-Newtonian material suppliers. We have paired our unique IP, and their outstanding materials to be able to make this world's first, and best, flexible helmet

We've gone through many iterations of design/ look/ feel, and some have made it further than others for design and manufacturing reasons. As you might imagine creating something new takes a lot of trial & error mixed in with mistakes.

Check out the prototype gallery for some of the prototypes and models we've built along the way; we've come a very long way!

Sizing will be super simple because the A1 will conform to your unique head shape, all you need to do is take a simple measurement. No more "Do you have these in another size out the back" questions at the store. This helmet WILL fit.

Every one of our helmets will be safe, or there's no point in making them.

That's why we'll be showing you our testing data before we send any helmets out. So far, we haven't seen any helmet manufacturer that has released all their testing data, and we think it's something everyone should do.

Our material tested in isolation at helmet thickness (28mm) exceeds the EN1077 certification flat anvil drop test by 12.9%.

Time to peak, impact attenuation, HIC?

Don't worry; we'll be sure to explain what it all means as we go. Helmets are complex, but being safe shouldn't be.

We are not using the Kickstarter to fund our prototypes or our R&D; we're using it to support our final tooling and production. We have fantastic investors that have covered those initial costs.

We're doing this now, so there's no delay in production as soon as the final elements are in place because we want this to be the last season we ever wear a hardhat helmet. We've been working at this for over two years, and have the R&D mapped out. We're just about ready to go, now is your chance to be part of the revolution.

Our Kickstarter will help us fund the final tooling of the helmets, so we can gain our final approval for the international standards and get them to you ASAP!

We're three best mates from Brisbane, Australia. We grew up in the "Sunshine State" of Australia, with exactly 0mm of snow on record for our town. Our favorite thing in the world is to shred with our mates. We're a tight team with varying backgrounds including medical engineering, project engineering, economics, finance, marketing and action sports.

Rob is the CEO and co-founder of Anti Ordinary. It was back in 2016 where he had the crash that sparked it all, and where the pursuit of the most comfortable helmet ever built started. Since then, alongside Brodie, he has pitched at many events, represented Australia at the Creative Business Cup in Copenhagen, been through the UQ Hype SpinLab accelerator, Pitchblak, the Virgin Startup Stepup program in London, among many others. In this time, Rob has taken the reigns at QUT Snowriders, Queensland's only student snowsports club.

As an avid action sports fan, Rob has competed nationally in wakeboarding, (the closest thing to snowboarding in the 'Sunshine State'), ridden motorcycles, mountain bikes, water skied, on top of being an avid snowboarder. Essentially, Rob has spent nearly his whole life in a helmet. No stranger to brain injuries, after studying Medical Engineering, and having his concussions, his passion is making our favorite activities safer and has dedicated his life to it. His engineering thesis is an extension of his passion and focuses on the efficacy of helmet testing procedures.

He rides regular stance, and loves powder runs with his girlfriend and mates more than anything else in the world, but is putting in work on his park game.

Brodie is the CTO and co-founder of Anti Ordinary. He was the first person Rob showed his design too and is the organizational genius that has helped shape the company into the well-run machine it is today. Growing up in sunny Queensland, Brodie has lived an active life, participating in any sport he could get into. More recently falling in love with skiing, his heart lies at the powdery drop in off the Highway, at the Remarkables (NZ).

Brodie graduated from Civil Engineering with First Class Honours and had since become a Project Engineer with one of the world's largest engineering firms. Brodie has led teams to compete at NASA in aircraft design competitions and has pitched alongside Rob all over the world for Anti Ordinary. World-renowned for his spreadsheet organizational skills, Brodie is a skilled professional through and through, bringing his leadership and governance skills to the team.

Brodie and his husky Zara dream of snow days, in particular freshly groomed trails at the Remarkables, NZ.

Liam has assumed the role of CMO and co-founder of ANTI. Liam and Rob met on a university ski trip in 2016 and were together at the time that Rob (stupidly) took his helmet off. An experienced marketer and economics graduate, Liam has cut his teeth in the high turnover e-commerce business. Liam is an e-commerce genius that can knock up a digital game plan quicker than most of us can make toast.

Liam has represented the ANTI team at the CSIRO Biomedical Launchpad program and loves nothing more than being on the slopes with his mates. Liam is one of the thousands of people who have been told they have a 'funny shaped head' because helmets have a hard time fitting. He has since realized it's not his head's fault but the limited sizing choice that helmets offer as they're rigid and don't conform to the head.

Liam has been snowboarding since 2007, after snapping his ACL skiing in the same year. Repping his favorite bright green jacket and 'Pickle Rick' Knee board, Liam is one man you cannot miss on the mountain.

Matt is a director, advisor, financial expert and lead investor of Anti Ordinary. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team and loves backcountry touring with his mates.

Matt has previously held the title of Director of Balance Sheet Trading for one of New Zealand's biggest banks. After finishing a successful financial career, Matt turned to the NZ ski town of Wanaka to base a successful property development company that has allowed him to stay close to the slopes.

After meeting Rob in St Anton, Austria, Matt has become a vital member of the team, advising with his vast experience and knowledge and helping guide the company to the stage it is at today. He is an experienced startup investor and an all-round great guy.

Matt is a hard man to keep up with on the slopes and has spent some serious time on the snow all around the world. He has joined on our mission to make everyone comfortable on the slopes, with no compromises.

Risks and challenges

We're 2 years into this project, but there are still a few big challenges we face.

Our helmet impact material works- but we have a few things within the design to finalise. How we attach our protective layer to the inner comfort layer must be optimised to make it as sleek as possible.

In this process, we will be exceeding the EN1077 and ASTM F2040 standards before we send any helmets out. These helmets will be certifiably safe. This process ads time and some complexity, but if it wasn't safe, what's the point?

We do have some challenges left to overcome, but we are ready for them. We have designed this helmet with room to adapt quickly and easily if needed. We have spent thousands of hours working on this, it's all we think about it. We're confident if an unexpected issue arises, we're equipped to deal with it.

We are surrounded by a wealth of knowledge. From industrial designers, to leaders in business, entrepreneurs and manufacturing experts; we have been meticulous in building our network, and are proud to say we are surrounded by some of the best in the business.

We have to finalise our tooling, which is why we're crowdfunding. Tooling is expensive, and we'll be using this money for our last hurdle before we give you the helmet you've been dreaming of!
