Gerlan Jeans is a sportswear brand for men and women, dedicated to making the world a brighter place, one colorful print at a time. Gerlan Jeans is about making creative design affordable and accessible to everyone. Gerlan Jeans is design with a message! Gerlan Jeans comes from the heart! Spread, peace, unity, and love through print, color, and pattern!
Founded, funded and single-handedly owned and operated by me, Gerlan Marcel, the first Gerlan Jeans collection debuted during New York Fashion week in February of 2009. I have been on an incredible color and print-filled journey ever since, one full of many triumphs and mixed with compromises both expected and unexpected.
Fall / Winter 2009 "Peace & Love Inc"
Spring / Summer 2010 "By Any Jeans Necessary"
There is an exhaustive list of logistics and expenses that go into putting a runway collection together and without the incredible support of my friends and family and the countless hours of donated time and energy from a tribe of creative and talented people (along with very little sleep and endless perseverance), I would not have been able to get this far. However, self-funding the last three collections has meant, more often than not, that my creative vision has exceeded my humble budget. Doing a lot with a little is a challenge I always embrace, but Gerlan Jeans has reached a place where I no longer have the self capitol it takes to keep up with the speed of growing demand. After three seasons of sales, order numbers have tripled and interest from new buyers is increasing worldwide, both on the web and in stores.
With this exciting progress, Gerlan Jeans is well on its way to becoming self-sufficient, but in order to build on this momentum, find potential investors, reach new customers, increase sales, and continue to spread love, Gerlan Jeans needs your support and participation to help fund the up-coming S/S 2011 collection and runway show extravaganza! New York Fashion week is just around the corner and the Gerlan Jeans studio is buzzing in preparation for the September show. So join the celebration and PLEDGE NOW to be a part of making this season the brightest and most print-tastic yet!
Here is a breakdown of some of the things your contributions will help fund:
MAKING THE COLLECTION
PURCHASING FABRIC Fabric qualities are sourced and prices finalized before raw fabric for sampling is sent out to print factories and dye houses.
PRINTING THE FABRIC Each print originates from my hand-drawn illustrations or ruff sketches. Then, using a computer to enhance them, I will put the graphics into repeat and prepare the file for printing. Once the prints have been finalized and the Pantone colors have been chosen, these high-resolution files are sent to the print factory and sample yardage is produced.
MAKING THE PATTERNS Once I have designed the collection, patterns are made based off of detailed technical sketches and measurement specs and then fit samples are sewn. Once the garments have been fit and style and technical adjustments have been made, the patterns are ready to be cut from the final printed fabric.
SEWING THE SHOW SAMPLES Once the printed and dyed fabric is ready, all approved patterns are cut and sewn into a finished garment.
SHIPPING THE SAMPLES Shipping heavy boxes of denim from China to New York can get pricey—plus duties and taxes on all shipments.
SHOWING THE COLLECTION
PRINTING AND MAILING SHOW INVITES I design the invite once the venue for the show has been confirmed. (As my budget does not allow for space rental fees, I rely on sponsorship in order to secure a show space.) Invites are printed and sent out to press, buyers, and special guests from all over the world!
SHOW PRODUCTION After spending time designing, making, fitting, and re-fitting the collection, the Gerlan Jeans vision is not complete with out also creating the perfect show atmosphere. Model casting, styling, make-up, hair, set design, sound, and lighting all help tell the story and complete the fantasy. The hope is always to find a venue that can provide most of the basics but you always have to plan ahead—just in case. Renting almost anything in New York City is expensive.
TRANSPORTATION Transporting heavy, bulky items in large quantities around New York City is tough. Cabs add up and vans must be rented to transport the clothes back and forth between the studio, the press office, the castings and the show space.
SELLING THE COLLECTION
LOOKBOOK PRINTING Each look from the collection is shot either in the studio or during model fittings before the show. Looks are then numbered and compiled into a photo booklet for buyers and promotional purposes.
LINE SHEET PRINTING This is a full-color document that buyers reference to place orders. Each garment is given a style number and includes a detailed sketch along with wholesale prices, colorways, prints, fabrications, and sizing for each item being sold.
SALES SHOWROOM RENTAL This is the most important part of the whole equation. The sales showroom is a chance for buyers to see the collection up close and on the rack. Quality, fit, color, style, fabrication, all play a part in their decision to buy. They will then make a selection of pieces that work best for their store and once orders are confirmed a deposit for production will be made!
