Cartoons Underground - Southeast Asia's first and largest underground animation festival is back!
Cartoons Underground in partnership with Sideshow celebrates its 6th year with a new set of awards for the best animation from the region and the world on 21st October 2017 at Kult Kafe!
Cartoons Underground Supports Local Young Talents
When we first launched Cartoons Underground in 2012, Patrick and I wanted to create a platform to promote local animators, and feature them alongside some of the leading figures in the growing global scene.
Singaporean animators are creating world-class and groundbreaking films, and yet there are few outlets to showcase their talent; punchy, exciting and beautiful short films that are strikingly different from mainstream animations generally seen in the cinema.
Singaporean animation has not received the recognition it deserves. It’s a small nation whose greatest resource is its people. Singapore has the potential to be a world-class animation centre and that was why we created Cartoons Underground.
Celebrating underground animation with the Golden Durian Awards!
Five years after its inception, Cartoons Underground is putting local animation on the map with the launch of three Golden Durian awards; for best film, best director and the ‘People’s Choice’ award for the best local film.
The judges for the 'People's Choice' award is the audience themselves! They can vote for their most favourite local film during the festival itself! The panel of judges Chris Shaw, Head of Film and Animation at Puttnam School at LASALLE, Marchand Jooste, Lead Animator at Industrial Light & Magic, and the Zhuang Brothers, local award-winning independent directors.

We Need Your Support
We first welcomed close to 250 people at our first ever festival on 29 November 2012, since then we have grown to over a thousand members in our community from all around the world, and welcomed close to 1000 people at our festival last year.
For us to reach the next level and continue to create a better festival every year, we need your financial support to cover some basic costs such as the marketing promotional materials, setting up of the screen, projectors, sound equipment and such.
Rewards for You!
We have great rewards for you guys in return, including an A3 size Cartoons Underground poster and exclusive Cartoons Underground T-Shirts as well as Caricatures from artists and original artwork from the Cartoons Underground team!
Risks and challenges
Without the financial backing, the cost of the screen and equipment will still be absorbed by our team. The marketing budget will be cut down but we will continue to explore free platforms to promote our festival.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
