I will be sending one of these pins to every incoming member of Congress and the Senate, 535 pins in all.  The pins will arrive before the 115th Congress goes into session on January 3.

This letter will accompany each pin:

In 1790, shortly after George Washington began his first term as President of the United States, he was sent a congratulatory letter from Moses Seixas of the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island. In this letter, Mr. Seixas expressed his appreciation and hope that these United States would be a safe haven for Jews who had known centuries of persecution.

In his gracious reply, President Washington wrote:

Happily, the government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.

Now is exactly the time for good citizens to give the United States our effectual support, by providing no sanction to bigotry, no assistance to persecution.

Rejection of bigotry is neither the purview of the Democratic party nor of the Republican party to the exclusion of the other. President Washington’s promise of opportunity and equality is the very fabric from which our union is sewn. This promise has been the steady moral guidance that shepherded our nation for two hundred forty years in times of battle and in times of tranquility. This promise, predicated on truths we still hold to be self-evident, bears repeating today.

Please accept this gift of a pin with President Washington’s words as a reminder to yourself and to those whom you encounter – that our Republic is one which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.

Risks and challenges

I will be ordering the pins from Zazzle on Dec 1, and will depend on their timely delivery.

I will be depending on a complete address list for the incoming Congress and Senate. and have addresses for the 114th Congress which should be a good start. 380 Representatives and 93 Senators have stayed the same, and I'm hopeful that I can find address information for the 55 new Representatives and 7 new Senators in short time.

And of course, whether or not to wear the pins will be the decision of each Congressperson and Senator.
