Hi there! My name is Cait and I am 1/4 of the band The Greys.
Our band consists of me (vox), Chris Merritt (bass), Mara Penatzer (keys), and Josh Daniel (drums). We’re from Western Mass.
We are currently trying to raise money for our first full length album, ‘Abeyance’. This album is also our first release as a 4 piece band. We have been writing these songs since we released our first EP, The Landing, in 2017. The Landing was created at a time when Chris and I were still an upright bass / vocal duo. For us, it signified experiencing a rough landing in an unfamiliar place, and choosing to stand up and move forward while still acknowledging what was around us . The Landing signified both the opening of doors and the closing of chapters. About 6 months after we released The Landing, we expanded our sound with Josh and Mara.
Chris and I have been working on writing these pieces for over a year and a half. We have most of the album completely finished, and about 3 pieces- or parts of pieces- left to write. This album crosses genres and boundaries, and Mara and Josh have inspired us to write in new ways. This instrumentation feels like where we were always supposed to end up sound-wise, and we’re super thankful for how they have built with us.
These songs are about our minds, our bodies, and the space we fill- but they also deal with serious loss and personal evolutions. While so much of The Landing was about reclaiming, Abeyance is largely about understanding and the space in between that and acceptance. As artists, especially artists who are very much struggling to survive while making art this prevalent in their lives, we know what it is like to exist in two realms. I think everyone has their version of that. This album is our inbetween. We’ve been here, exploring, but there still isn’t nearly a resolution in sight. We still have half a foot in one reality, and half in another. Mental health is always a theme in my lyrics, writing is how I cope- but this album digs deeper into alternate parts of our mind. Guilt and release are huge themes.
We have been trying to build up our funds for about a year now for this album, but with our first tour, the single we have just released to help promote this project, and our upcoming music video- the small amount of funds we saved on our own are nearing an end just to get this music off the ground. This year has been a big one of personal milestones, and we all work full time jobs- but to make this happen we are going to need your help.
This money will go to professionally recording and mastering our album. It will also go to music videos, album artwork, and promotional necessities for this piece of work. Last time we ended up having to fund quite a bit of our EP ourselves even after crowdfunding, and we expect that to be the case again- but this money would be a HUGE step towards our goal. We’ve also come up with some pretty cool sponsorship levels that ensure you receive proper thanks no matter what level you choose to help.
During these 35 days we will be posting insight into where our songs come from, fun Greys trivia, and rehearsal clips- we appreciate you taking the time to learn about us!
Risks and challenges
This album is our most personal work yet. Without this help we don’t know if we will be able to make this album within the next year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
