What is The Society of Seasonal Secret Keepers?
The Truth Comes Out
One day, your child will ask, "Is Santa real?" Or they'll spot the Bunny hiding the eggs and wonder why it looks so much like Aunt Mary, or they'll wonder how the Tooth Fairy gets in the house. And you'll tell them the truth...
When kids age out of their shelf elf...
Some kids are sad, others angry, most are disappointed. Other than the sad truth, parents had very few resources to make this a celebrated rite of passage.
It's time to become a Secret Agent
Grownups are already secret agents for the Holiday Spirit. The Society of Seasonal Secret Keepers welcomes kids into this age-old club, teaching them to uphold the values of:
- Secrecy - Don't spill the beans to other kids.
- Maturity - As part of growing up, we are entrusted with information and the responsibility to spread the Spirit of the holidays.
- Agency - The Spirit of the holidays can be spread by showing others love and kindness and compassion, bringing them joy, creating peace, exhibiting patience and self-control, and choosing to do the right thing.
- Empowerment - Agents for the Society of Seasonal Secret Keepers are empowered to make a positive difference in other peoples' lives.
Respect - A two-sided approach to respecting your own family's beliefs, while understanding that others uphold different beliefs and should be likewise respected.
A field guide. A token. A club.
The Society of Seasonal Secret Keepers Field Guide: Ancient Secrets for Modern Kids is a fun handbook, ushering kids through this (sometimes sad) rite of passage in a positive, upbeat way.
The book is accompanied by an heirloom-quality medallion-like token with the Society's seal. This beautiful, custom-minted coin can be hung for display or used as a Christmas ornament.
The society is real. It's always been around, really. We're just putting a name and shape to what grownups and big kids have always done. We want kids to band together and uphold holiday traditions with a spirit of kindness.
We're just getting rolling, but we are working on ways to provide online membership, ideas, and support. We strive to provide a truth-based transition, not just a fictional band aid.
A Special Gift from You to Your Child
When you give your child their secret Field Guide, token, and certificate stating they are now a Secret Agent for the Holiday Spirit, they will feel celebrated and grown-up. Working through the Field Guide will provide purpose, answer common questions, and give them a sense of pride as they enter this new, more grown-up stage.
The medallion will be a life-long treasure, passed to their own children when they learn this truth.
What's in the Field Guide?
Part 1of the field guide is a pep talk to pull the kids on board and explain how fun and important this new stage of their life can be. It answers questions like:
Is it all a big, fat, stinkin' lie?
We'll back you up, grownups. We explain the desire to share joy with others, and why society upholds these traditions.
Part 2 of the Field Guide helps kids sort out and understand the difference between facts, beliefs, and traditions.
Is everything like this? God? Bigfoot? Ghosts?
The Field Guide suggests discussion topics for kids and their families, to encourage meaningful conversation about what you believe. Authors Emily and Janie come from very different belief systems, and have crafted a message that allows us to hold strongly to our own beliefs, while building a foundation of mutual respect for others.
Kids will also learn fun factoids about different traditions and beliefs around the world. (Wait until you see what we've found out about Iceland!)
Part 3 addresses the question: What now?
Kids are challenged to complete missions to move up the Society ranks and become a specialized agent. When complete, they can contact the Society via our website to receive recognition and awards for their good work.
The missions encourage kids to kind things for others to show love and kindness, be helpful, provide encouragement, create joy, and to develop their own self-control. But they're so fun, they'll never know they're building character!
Emily Parnell - Mastermind of The Society of Seasonal Secret Keepers, professional writer, author, and print and web designer, and mom to a 10-year-old who recently joined the Society, and an 8-year-old who probably soon will.
Thad Parnell - Artist extraordinaire, print production expert, creator of our awesome video, and the Sweet Papa Daddy of the Parnell family.
Janie Rainn - Co-author, English teacher, advocate for children everywhere, mom to a 13-year-old Society member, and a 10-year-old who soon will be.
Who will like this?
- Parents and other grownups with kids who are ready to know, and be part of, the truth. The book can be held on to, ready to be presented at the inevitable moment that parents choose to share the truth..
- Parents of kids who learned the truth in the last two years or so will enjoy and benefit from forming a new, more selfless viewpoint through the book's series of exercises and missions.
- Designed so it can be used to reinforce family values across a variety of belief systems, in both traditional and non-traditional families.
Holidays are a great time, but not the only time for this book. The missions are varied, and many can be performed any time of year. The values it teaches apply any time of year!
What's the progress??
We began this project in Spring '14, and the book is coming along nicely. Content is being finalized, and design is in-progress.
The medallion art has been sketched. We won't be satisfied until it's uber-cool and feels as special and important as the kids who will receive it.
Website functionality will be the next piece of this project. We want to build a community around this Secret Society - and make it real and interactive for the kids. Think of it as a clandestine scouts group, building character, and making growing up FUN!
Why We Need Help
We need your financial backing to defray initial printing and coin-minting costs, and to help us spread the word.
We are experienced in marketing, print, and product production, and have sourced US manufacturers and printing to provide a high-quality product at economical costs. We have experience building online stores and with order fulfillment, and are currently researching retail outlet options.
Roughly half of the Kickstarter funds will be used for minting a high-quality token. The other half will cover book printing and initial marketing. Exceeding our initial funding goal will enable us to begin creating functionality on the website.
Risks and challenges
Audience Reach: We know there is a market for this product, but we must be cautious not to spill the beans in our attempts to reach them. Our marketing campaign will provide teasers to attract parents of kids who are asking the hard questions about Santa and other magical childhood beliefs.
Our Plan: In addition to being a professional writer with a strong reader platform, Emily brings marketing knowledge and contacts within the publishing world. She has helped create and market independently published kid's books and products, and will employ all she's learned to reach the eyes of parents and other adults with kids experiencing this coming of age.
Outlet: There is no readily apparent shelf in the bookstore for this item, which is why we are not pursuing traditional publishing. Therefore, we plan to sell exclusively online and through boutiques. The website is built, payment vehicle in place, now we just need to go into production!
Project Completion: Content is in development and we're confident in our team. We've imposed a tight, but achievable timeline, which includes enough time for a focus study to ensure we're hitting the mark.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
