The Hummingbird Team
We worked all weekend on the bike, we added a rear brake and we're working on a concept for mounting bags or racks on the Hummingbird.
We've also added mudguards for the Hummingbird Bike! We're sorry that they were not included in our campaign, we always had plans of offering them in the final production version of the Hummingbird. So here it is!
We have been working on a concept for a bag-mounting rack that we tested out yesterday. It's still rough, but the mechanics of it are there. It will be a detachable minimalistic basket where you can place your bags and then tie them tight so they don't fall off. We will work on the design a bit to make it look sleek, but this is what we've come up with so far:
We've even let ourselves be inspired by the whole process and went back to the drawing board! Here's what we came up with, our journey from start to finish!
The Hummingbird is the lightest folding bike on the market: it weighs only 6.5 kg (~14 lb). It’s made out of carbon fibre and ticks all the boxes: technology, performance, comfort and looks. Our mission is to make the folding bike experience the best it can possibly be. Even the lightest folding bike on the market is 3 kg heavier than the Hummingbird Bike.
Why should you support the Hummingbird? Our mission is to make the world a little bit better, one bike at a time. By choosing a bike instead of public transportation, you're helping decrease pollution. A bike as light as the Hummingbird becomes an accessory, similar to an umbrella. You don't feel the stress of carrying something big around with you. Cycling becomes part of your lifestyle. You become a little happier and the world gets a little greener. Win-win.
The Hummingbird started from our passion for optimising products and solving problems. We realised that there is no folding bike out there that is both a pleasure to ride and to carry around. Most of them are heavy and take a while to fold, which doesn’t fit in with the idea of an urban commuter who’s always on the go. We wanted to make a lightweight, carbon fibre folding bike that stands out as the best solution for the modern commuter.
We built the Hummingbird last year and we were amazed by people’s reactions to it. The positive feedback and the support we got made us want to take this bike to the next step: production. What we have now is an innovative and lightweight folding bike that is ready for the market: The Hummingbird.
People who own folding bikes tend to be commuters. They cycle to and from their offices, folding their bikes and getting on the tube or bus along the way. It seems strange that there are no lightweight folding bikes on the market right now, since this is the most important feature of a folding bike.
The Hummingbird is for those of you who already own a folding bike but find that it's not that pleasant to carry around. Or for those of you who thought about buying a folding bike but were not quite convinced. But above all, it’s for urban commuters who enjoy a good ride.
Peter and Ligia have been working on bringing Hummingbird to life for quite a while now. It’s hard to believe the project is finally live. It took a lot of work, many arguments and also meetings with accountants, lawyers and mentors. Setting up a company is way harder than we thought! With Peter doing product design and Ligia helping with branding and marketing, it was actually a fun ride, especially when the team grew bigger!
Carbon fibre is five times stronger than steel, twice as stiff and one third its weight. It is lighter than aluminum and stiffer than titanium.
Carbon fibre is the super hero of the high tech composites world – it’s one of the strongest and most lightweight materials available on the market today. It also absorbs the vibrations, which makes for a smoother ride. Its compressive strength is greater than all the reinforcing materials.
What does this all mean? That you’ll have an ultralight and incredibly stiff bike which is also very comfortable, thanks to the advanced technology used in manufacturing.
As a product design student and a bike fanatic, Peter has always had a passion for taking things apart, understanding how they work and improving them. Many folding bikes on the market are expensive, not that light and not even that compact. If we could design a bike that solved most of these issues, it would bring innovation into a market that isn’t that innovative.
The Hummingbird is easy to fold and carry around: you can take it anywhere. It’s compact enough for an elevator and light enough to carry up the stairs, which makes it perfect for the modern urban commuter.
The market defines “lightweight” in terms of folding bikes at around 10kg. The Hummingbird weighs 6.5 kg. To help put things in perspective, two cats weigh 7 kg.
You can take the Hummingbird out for short distances or even for longer trips. It will easily fit in your car or on a plane. You can ride it at top speed or at a steady pace to enjoy your commute; you can ride it up a hill or hop on a bus with it if that's what you want to do.
The Hummingbird comes in four colours, each tending to a different personality: yellow, black, red and pure carbon fibre. Once you choose a pledge, we will email you to ask about your colour preferences.
The bike will also be available in two versions: with 16" wheels or 20" wheels. The version we first created to be the lightest is the 16" version you can see in the video, but it's an easy adjustment to make the wheels a bit bigger, if you prefer to have them. This means that the 20" version of the Hummingbird will weigh around 7 kg and be a bit bigger when folded, but will still be the lightest folding bike in the world!
The Hummingbird is manufactured and assembled in Britain to the highest standard, using a range of leading technologies from rapid prototyping using 3D printers to automotive industry CAM machines. The bike will be quality tested under the ISO 4210 test . We care a lot about the quality of things and we want to make sure that we deliver the best results.
The most important feature of the Hummingbird Bike is innovation. The folding system is the biggest invention, as it solves a problem that every other folding bike has. The pivot for the rear triangle is around the bottom bracket shell, and the chain tensioner is removed. This means a lighter system as well as a safer one; the chain can’t fall any more so there’s no need for you to get your hands dirty!
At our UK-based factory we will manufacture custom frames and forks, as well as the back part of the bike. For the other specs, check this list:
The Hummingbird Bike will also have mudguards and a rear brake for the production version!
**Please note: Backers are responsible for sales taxes and import duties, which will vary according to the country, state or province to which the reward is being shipped. VAT is included.
We currently have a working prototype and have partnered with a manufacturer. As it stands, the production will start in October, after we have the bike quality-control tested. The product will be certified as safe to ride anywhere in the world.
We have already applied for a patent and registered our design rights, so we are looking forward to seeing the product being mass-produced. In six (hopefully short) months you’ll be one of the first people to ride and own a Hummingbird!
We need your help to spread the word! The simplest way you can help us is to tell friends, family, colleagues and random strangers on the street about the Hummingbird. We’d love to see you get involved in our social media campaign as well, so feel free to like, share and tweet our posts!
To get really involved, you can also buy the Hummingbird! Buying our bike will help you be part of a community and start a revolution in the folding bike industry! Our aim is to bring the Hummingbird into shops, but until then you can be the first to ride it and enjoy the special Kickstarter price!
The Hummingbird is so close to becoming a reality. Your support at this early stage will help determine if the Hummingbird will reach cyclists around the world. Your support will allow us to give cycling and commuting a new perspective, hopefully a revolutionary one. So thank you for being here and reading through our project!
It’s been a long and exciting journey and we hope that our idea will make some waves in the market! Or at least that we gave you something interesting to share and tweet about. If you want to get in touch and ask us some questions, give us feedback or just say hello, we’d love to hear from you.

Risks and challenges
By far the biggest challenge is to get a perfect-looking bike out of the factory. But we think we've got this covered: we've found a great manufacturing company in the UK. We'll be there to see the first bike off the production line and to make sure that everything goes as it should.
Apart from that, we're all set. Nothing is going to stop us from giving our 100% to get the Hummingbird on the streets!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The production version of the Hummingbird has both front and rear wheel brakes, as well as fenders to keep all your rides safe and clean.
Yes ! We will be shipping anywhere in the world, although the costs vary depending on country, as follows:
UK - £50
Worldwide - £100
Carbon fibre is incredibly light and strong - the main reason we chose to use it. Carbon fibre is five times stronger than steel, twice as stiff and one third its weight. It is lighter than aluminum and stiffer than titanium. Carbon also absorbs the vibrations, which makes for a smoother ride. Its compressive strength is greater than all the reinforcing materials.
We believe that an urban commuter should be able to enjoy a high end bike light enough to walk up a flight of stairs, and strong enough to withstand everyday stress.
Our manufacturing partner is right here in the UK - it was the best choice for us, to ensure high end deliverables and also have the best quality control process we could.
The bike is proudly designed, engineered and assembled in London.
The bike will come pre-assembled, if you request it. Detailed instructions will also be included in the package, for those of you who like a bit of a DIY challenge.
Initially, we will be offering the following colours:
Clear coated carbon fiber.
After you pledge and the project is over we will email you to ask about your colour preferences!
The bike can be serviced at any bike shop.
The Hummingbird will come with a standard threaded head lug, to which you can mount third party carrier bags. Things like baskets, mud-guards and racks can also be installed on the bike. We highly recommend not to alter any other mechanical components for rider’s safety. Third party accessories may interfere with the fold.
We provide one year manufacturer’s warranty.
The dimensions are 23" × 32" × 9.5" or 60*80*20 cm
The Hummingbird can accommodate riders up to 242l bs/110 Kg
The Hummingbird can accommodate riders from 1.4m to 2m. ( 5’ to 6’5”)
The handlebar stem will come in 3 sizes Small / Medium / Large. These three options combined with adjustability of the seat post will help you dial in your perfect riding position. After the campaign ends we will email you to ask what size you prefer.
The 5 speed version will be an Internal Geared Hub (IGH). We are currently looking at Sturmey archer hubs with an integrated grip shifter.
From our experience it all depends on where you live. If you live in an area where there are lots of hills and ups and downs, it's better to go for a 5-speed. If not, a single-speed will be just perfect. The 20” inch model is slightly larger and heavier but smooths out uneven roads better.
Our initial concept included the use of a belt drive, it was one of the initial design constraints, but for the moment we chose to go with traditional chain due to the cost and availability of belt drive systems. In the future we are thinking of offering a belt drive model, perhaps as a stretch goal!
Actually, yes. The front wheel will come with a quick release that will allow for the fast removal of the front wheel to be mounted parallel to the back wheel reducing the overall size of the package.
The Hummingbird fits very nicely in a trunk and can be taken in public transportation (tube, bus). We’ve been doing it for over a year!
